Don’t judge a pup by its spots - HSTT drops dog breed labels

These days the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe’s dog descriptions read less like a list of stats, and more like a friendly dating site, thanks to a recent move to drop breed labels.

Potential adopters may find that Lily is a “fun-loving and energetic girl with a lot of love to share,” while Sherman’s favorite activity is “going on long nature hikes with you.” But what they won’t find are specific breed labels.

Letter: Lake Tahoe Humane Society needs our help

Our local Humane Society needs our help.

Day in and day out our local Humane Society answers the needs of people who have lost their cat or dog or those who have been forced to move to a place where their pets are not allowed. They host spay and neutering clinics to help with over population and other pet inoculation issues. This past Christmas I saw them giving out pet food to those who were too poor to feed their pets.

For 50 years the Lake Tahoe Humane Society has offered services to animals in the South Lake Tahoe community. They are now facing challenges after their Executive Director Niki Congero was fired when allegations of embezzlement arose when their bank called them about irregular activity on the agency's debit card.

Vintage Buffalo: From flooded thrift store to fun boutique

On January 23, 2017, snow caused the roof collapse of the historic building that housed not only the Green Tahoe Market and Liquor Store on Harrison Avenue in South Lake Tahoe, but also the Lucky Dog Thrift Store.

When the roof collapsed, the sprinkler system was set off and the water main broke, sending gallons of water through the stores in the building. Clean up and building repairs are still underway.

Thanks,

Dear Marvin,

These two weekly meals and the food ‘give away’ bags distributed at the meals are supported by generous stores, businesses and restaurants who have donated food, beverages and soups to our program throughout the past year.

Hopeful Henry: How pets can enjoy Thanksgiving too!

‘Tis the season for friends, family and holiday feasts—but also for possible distress for our animal companions. Pets won’t be so thankful if they munch on under-cooked turkey or a pet-unfriendly floral arrangement, or if they stumble upon an unattended alcoholic drink.

Check out the following tips from ASPCA experts for a fulfilling Thanksgiving that your pets can enjoy, too.

Ask Hopeful Henry: Why cats lose weight

Dear Hopeful Henry,
I have a 15 year old cat who has started losing weight and is just not that interested in food (except for turkey sandwich meat). We have been to the vet and basically he is just old. Henry,
I frequently see young men riding skateboards or bicycles with small dogs running along beside them. How much strenuous exercise is good for little dogs and how can the dog owner know when he is pushing the dog too hard? Dogs will run really hard to stay up with their owner. How much is too much?
