Sisters recognized for perfect attendance at South Lake Tahoe schools

Ryann and Morgan Canfield were recognized during Tuesday's Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board meeting for their commitment to achieving perfect attendance as students.

Ryann, and eighth grader at South Tahoe Middle School, has missed just one day of school in her life, and that was one day in kindergarten so she has eight consecutive years of perfect attendance. Her sister, Morgan, a fifth grader at Tahoe Valley Elementary has had perfect attendance throughout her six-year (to-date) school career, including a year of transitional kindergarten.

Schools remind parents of new immunization rule for California

El Dorado County Public Health and school officials are reminding parents of a new California school immunization law, SB 277 that went into effect January 1, 2016. The law eliminates exemptions based on personal beliefs, including religious beliefs, for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into child care or school, kindergarten through grade 12.

South Lake Tahoe teen named Youth of the Year

Mya Rossi has been named Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls club of Lake Tahoe because of her outstanding contributions to both the club and her community.

Along with this role she will also be receiving a Heavenly/Kirkwood/Northstar season pass next winter courtesy of the Vail Epic Promise Program.

Free kid's soccer tournament at LTCC

Kindergarten Round Up for all perspective students

Its time again for kindergarten enrollment in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

Registration for the 2016-17 school year is being held from May 2 through May 6 at all local elementary schools for children will be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2016.

Children who will be five years of age between September 1, 2016 and December 2, 2016 qualify for Transitional Kindergarten (TK), a two year Kindergarten program located at Tahoe Valley Elementary School.

LTUSD School Board: Immunizations, pay raises, improvements and Nevada student plan

The agenda for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education on Tuesday, March 8 is a full one. Board members will be addressing the new state law concerning immunizations, new lights for the soccer field at South Tahoe Middle School, a conditioning room and new flooring at South Tahoe High, student privacy, finances, a 4.5% raise for employees, and discuss a tuition agreement with Douglas County Schools. The meeting begins at the District Office at 5:00 p.m. with closed session, with the public portion beginning about 6:00 p.m.

Smokey Bear and U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Fire Prevention staff, Bill Sanders and Jacob Ruano, visited a Head Start class in South Lake Tahoe last week. They were there to teach the pre=kindergarten students about fire safety and fire prevention.

Dr. Seuss' birthday celebrated at Bijou Community School

The iconic Dr. Seuss would have been 112 years old today, and even though not still living, his birthday is celebrated with top hats, green eggs and ham and lots of reading out of his collection of books that has delighted generations.

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Mass., and adopted the name Dr. Seuss when he was in college.

In honor of his birthday, students at Bijou Community School in South Lake Tahoe celebrated with stories, costumes and green eggs and ham.

Local Forest Service employee wins national award

Joy Barney was recently honored for her dedication to the U.S. Forest Service's educational programs in the Lake Tahoe basin.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) Conservation Education Program Specialist was awarded the Gifford Pinchot Pacific Southwest Region Interpreter and Conservation Educator of the Year Award. Named in honor of the first Chief of the Forest Service, the annual award is a national honor given to Forest Service employees for achievement in environmental interpretation and conservation education.

Time to register for Lake Tahoe Unified schools

With school starting on August 31, its now time for children entering South Lake Tahoe schools for the first time to register,

Kindergartners need to be registered at their designated elementary school, as determined by location. Boundaries are available for viewing at www.ltusd.org or a map can be picked up at the Education Center at 1021 Al Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe.

Auditions for Missoula Children's Theater production of Aladdin

Tahoe Arts Project will be bringing the Missoula Children’s Theater back to Tahoe the week of July 6-10. Auditions will be held for the Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT) production of Aladdin on Monday July 6 at the South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose room from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Those auditioning should arrive at 10:00 a.m. and plan to stay for the full two hours. Some of the cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition.

Vaccine exemptions: California Senate overwhelmingly passes SB 277

A controversial bill that abolishes "personal belief exemptions" for vaccinations won overwhelming approval in the California Senate on Thursday, bolstering supporters' hopes that it will also clear the Assembly and be signed into law.

The measure by Democratic Sens. Richard Pan, of Sacramento, and Ben Allen, of Santa Monica -- introduced after a outbreak of measles in December at Disneyland sickened 136 Californians -- passed 25-10 after the two senators agreed to compromises aimed at easing its passage.

Celebration of Education at South Tahoe Middle School Wednesday

The annual Celebration of Education hosted by the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation will take place on Wednesday, May 13 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at South Tahoe Middle School.

South Lake Tahoe kindergarten and transitional kindergarten sign-ups

Sign-ups for both kindergarten and transitional kindergarten in Lake Tahoe Unified Schools will be held May 4 - May 8.

To be eligible for enrollment a child must be five years of age on or before September 1, 2015. If your child will turn five years of age between September 2 and December 2, 2015, they qualify for transitional kindergarten which is a two year Kindergarten program located at Tahoe Valley Elementary School.

2015/16 LTUSD Kindergarten Enrollment - The Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESMS) in Meyers is now taking names for the Fall ‘15 “line-up” of kindergartners. If you have a child who will be turning 5 on or before September 1st, 2015, please come to the Magnet School office (1095 East San Bernardino Ave.) to fill out a lottery application. The lottery will be held on April 1, 2015.

Enrollment at the Magnet School is NOT on a first-come, first-served basis, so you may submit the application any time before the end of March.

If you would like your child to attend kindergarten at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESM) for the 2015/16 school year you may start turning in student names after the district's holiday break.

Bringing Art To Schools in South Lake Tahoe

Free McDonald's Breakfast for Kids in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday

Local students in grades kindergarten through eight grade can receive a free breakfast from either of the South Lake Tahoe McDonald's locations on Tuesday, September 9 from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

McDonald's in Northern California and Northern Nevada are helping children kick start their new school year with their healthy breakfast. Each student on Tuesday will receive an Egg White Delight McMuffin, apple slices and 1 percent low fat milk.

Students must be accompanied by an adult.

Lake Tahoe Unified students head back to school

It's once again time to hear the ring of the school bell, to see the yellow buses going through the neighborhoods, and hear the happy voices from the school playgrounds.

The summer vacation ends Monday for students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District as walk, ride or drive to their first day of school.

Classes at South Tahoe High School start at 7:55 a.m. and school is out at 2:40 p.m. South Tahoe Middle School starts at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 1:55 p.m.

The four elementary schools have different start and end times:
Bijou, grades K-5 runs from 8:35 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe is extremely grateful of the services that are being donated by John’s Cleaners.

Once a week we have the opportunity to drop off our shirts that the kids wear daily and they wash and clean them for us. This is a very important service because we want the kids to feel comfortable and clean with the shirts we provide them.

Registration for kindergarten at South Lake Tahoe schools will be held on August 4th. South Tahoe Middle School registration for new students will be held on August 12 and for new students at South Tahoe High August 11-14.

Whopping Cough on the Rise in South Lake Tahoe and Rest of County

Whooping cough has made an alarming resurgence across the county this year, prompting health officials to call for booster shots for children and adults over the age of 11 as well as up to date immunizations for infants.

Local health officials have seen more than double the normal number of pertussis (whooping cough) cases this year. There have been six reported cases in South Lake Tahoe and four on the west slope of El Dorado County. Statewide there have been 3,458 cases since January 1.

Tryouts for Missoula Children's Theater Summer Show, Rapunzel

The Tahoe Arts Project is once again hosting the Missoula Children's Theater this summer in South Lake Tahoe. There are 60 roles available for kids between the ages of 5 and 17 (must be at least 5 and completed Kindergarten). Tryouts will be held on July 7 between 10 a.m. and noon.

It is free to audition. If selected during auditions there is a $50 per child fee to participate. There are some scholarships available so please call Peggy Thompson at 530-542-3632 to apply.

Depending on the role, rehearsals will be held Tuesday through Thursday, July 8-10 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Kids Looking for Things to do This Summer? How About STAR Camp?

The City of South Lake Tahoe Community Services department started their STAR (South Tahoe Adventure Recreation) camps this week. Youth and teens ages 6 to 16 can use this summer to explore Lake Tahoe by enjoying field trips, swimming, going to the beach and many other activities, all in a safe and fun environment.

Transitional Kindergarten Classes to be Held at Tahoe Valley Elementary

Children not 5 years old by the time school starts in the fall are unable to attend kindergarten due to a new state law, but the Lake Tahoe Unified School District will have Transitional Kindergarten (TK).

The Kindergarten Readiness Act, signed into law by Gov. Schwarzenegger in 2010, changed the kindergarten entry date from Dec. 2 to Sept. 1 so that children enter kindergarten at age 5. The law phases in the new age requirement by moving the cutoff date one month a year for three years, beginning this fall for children born between Nov. 2 and Dec. 2.

Local Elementary School May Be Rebranded as Sierra House Mountain Academy

The idea of Sierra House Elementary School becoming the Sierra House Mountain Academy was presented to the Lake Tahoe Unified School Board this week. If this becomes reality, Sierra House would join the other themed South Lake Tahoe elementary schools: Meyers is the Environmental Magnet School and Tahoe Valley is the Performing Arts Magnet School.

The Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School in Meyers is now taking names for the Fall 2014 line-up of Kindergarteners. 2013 Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation Food Fest
