25th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show flies into town

The 25th annual Lake in the Sky Air Show at Lake Tahoe Airport in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, California is scheduled for Saturday, September 20, 2014. The Lake in the Sky Air Show has been described as “the best in the west” by one of its many professional aerial participants.

This year’s show which will include exciting aerobatic performances by several top performers including Bill Cornick, Jon Melby and Spencer Suderman.

Power out throughout South Lake Tahoe

8:20 PM UPDATE:According to Liberty Energy, they are slowly getting power back on, starting up the grid with Glenbrook. It may take a few more hours to get the whole South Shore back up and running.

South Lake Tahoe is without power this afternoon due to a problem with NV Energy losing electricity. The region lost connection to both transformers coming out of Nevada.

Minden and Alpine County are also without power.

The energy company is working on the problem but repair time is unknown.

Celebrities arriving in town: Celebrity-Am Tournament Wednesday

The private airplanes are starting to line the tarmac at the Lake Tahoe Airport so that can only mean one thing, it's time for the 25th Annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship.

Practice rounds started Tuesday, and Wednesday will be the 2014 Lake Tahoe Celebrity-Am Tournament, pairing up some of the celebrities golfing this weekend with invited guests.

Free ABC Licensee Drug and Alcohol Education Training in South Lake Tahoe

City of South Lake Tahoe Releases Public Comments on Airport Master Plan

February's community meeting on the South Lake Tahoe Airport Master Plan was attended by dozens of residents interested in the future of the airport. As promised, the consultants on the project have released all of the comments collected during and after the meeting.

South Lake Tahoe Community Input Sought for Wildfire Protection Plan

Living in a forest gives great benefits, but it also carries with it the risk of forest fires.

A Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for South Lake Tahoe is being developed jointly by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and Lake Valley Fire Protection District.

The community is being asked to complete a survey which will help the agencies prepare the CWPP. This will enable the creation of a plan on how the south shore will reduce it's risk of wildfire by identifying strategic sites and methods for fuel reduction projects.

South Lake Tahoe Winter Olympians' Welcome Home Parade Saturday

The Welcome Home celebration for the South Lake Tahoe Olympians will be held on Saturday, March 15. A procession will leave South Tahoe High at 1 p.m. and proceed to the Y, down Highway 50, through Meyers and to Sierra at Tahoe.

Large Group Shows Up to Hear About South Lake Tahoe Airport Master Plan

They came to have their opinion heard. They came to call for the closure of the airport. They came to support the airport. They came to be a part of the South Lake Tahoe Airport Master Plan process.

An overflowing crowd showed up at the South Lake Tahoe City Council chambers Thursday night to hear about the process involved in preparing the upcoming plan for the future of the airport, why a new plan is needed and what it takes to replace the outdated 1992 Master Plan.

What’s the future of the Lake Tahoe Airport? South Lake Tahoe residents, businesses and interested citizens are invited to hear about the possibilities and weigh-in at an Airport Master Plan meeting Thursday, Feb. 13, at 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Airport.

C&S Companies, with more than 30 years of experience preparing airport master plans, is developing and creating a new airport master plan to address the airport’s needs and promote value to community prosperity while also incorporating sustainable practices into its long-term development.

Sugar Pine Foundation Has Busy Planting Season Ahead

The Sugar Pine Foundation's goal is to save the Sugar Pine and White Pine trees from blister rust in Lake Tahoe by educating and and involving the community in hands-on forest stewardship.

The group has several opportunities this fall to help save the trees by planting seedling in areas around the lake. 850 seedlings have already been planted this fall and more will be planted at the following events:

K-Tahoe hits the Minden-Tahoe "Aviation Roundup"

New KTHO morning show, Charlee Simons & Jen, were disappointed that the So. Lake Tahoe Airport "Lake in the Sky" airshow had to be cancelled due to the smoke from the fires, so they made it down the mountain into Minden for the Minden/Tahoe Airport "Aviation Roundup this past weekend. It was quite incredible when an actual P-51 Mustang taxied up behind them!

Low-Cost Community Flu Clinics Announced in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Division will begin conducting low-cost community flu vaccination clinics in South Lake Tahoe starting September 25.

Flu shot clinics:

September 25, October 9, October 23, & October 30 from to 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe.

October 16 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Bijou School, 3501 Spruce Avenue, in the Teachers’ Lounge, South Lake Tahoe.

$43.1 Million Highway Project Officially Dedicated

"Look at Lake Tahoe as the picture and Highway 50 as the frame" were the words of South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tom Davis as he spoke at the Trout Creek Bridge to Ski Run Boulevard Project Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Friday.

Fire Fest is back! This year's event will be held on Saturday, September 28 at the South Lake Tahoe airport from 10 am to 3 pm. Fire Fest is a free annual event that highlights fire and life safety for children and families. Helicopters will star at Fire Fest as they land at the SLT Airport. Come sit in a fire truck, escape from the Smoke House, wear fire fighting equipment, squirt fire hoses, play in a bounce house, meet Smokey Bear and Sparky, watch fire departments compete, learn about fire resistant construction and enjoy a Kiwanis BBQ!

Lake of Sky Airshow Canceled Due to Smoke

The 25th Annual Lake of the Sky Airshow has been cancelled for this Saturday, August 24th due to the air quality conditions which have been impacted by the two large fires outside of the Lake Tahoe basin. Also canceled was Sunday's Young Eagles Flights.

South Lake Tahoe accepting applications for Citizens Academy

The City of South Lake Tahoe is now accepting applications for the Fall 2013 Citizens Academy. The Citizens Academy will be held on Wednesday evenings from 5:30pm-8pm from September 25th – October 30th. The application deadline is Friday, September 6th at 5pm.

The Citizens Academy is open to all community members and provides an exciting opportunity for residents to increase their knowledge about the workings of local government and have a desire to become more involved in the shaping and development of their community.

Update: More details on fatal plane crash in South Lake Tahoe

A single engine Mooney airplane crashed shortly after take off from the South Lake Tahoe airport at approximately 11:10 AM today.

The plane was observed by numerous witnesses begin to lose altitude after take off, and bank sharply into a wooded area east of the airport. The plane crashed into some large pine trees and flipped over.

The male pilot, Steven Lefton 67 years of age of Palo Alto, CA was killed on impact. His wife, Karen Lefton sustained moderate injuries and was pinned in the wreckage of the plane.

Pilot dies in South Lake Tahoe plane crash

The pilot of a single-engine plane crashed moments after taking off Monday from Lake Tahoe Airport.

The pilot’s wife was the lone passenger of the 1963 Mooney. She was conscious when Calstar airlifted her from the meadow near Golden Bear to Renown Medical Center in Reno. She is expected to recover from her injuries.

Forest Service to hold informational meeting on Upper Truckee project

The Forest Service will hold a meeting Thursday, May 30, to answer questions and provide information about its Upper Truckee River restoration project.

The project area is located east of the Lake Tahoe Airport runway and west of the Washoan subdivision in the Tahoe Paradise residential area. The meeting will provide an overview of the activities that will occur this summer, and how these will limit public access during construction due to safety concerns associated with heavy equipment operation.

Plane crashes leaving Lake Tahoe Airport; no survivors

News agencies report 5 dead in fiery South Lake Tahoe airplane crash; aircraft registered to Fresno man (VIDEO)

UPDATE 3:27PM: KOLO Reno Channel 8 reports the brother of the registered owner of the Piper that crashed in South Lake Tahoe Saturday night says all five people aboard died. Javier de la Mora says his brother, Francisco de la Mora, of Fresno was in the airplane when it crashed. Francisco's wife and daughter and two other people were on board as well. UPDATE 2:56PM: The City of South Lake Tahoe issued the following news release and photos this afternoon:

A small plane crashed shortly after takeoff on Saturday, August 25th at 9:48 pm from Lake Tahoe Airport. The crash ignited a fire in the meadow just past the airport off of Winnemucca Avenue. The fire burned approximately one acre and took an hour and a half to extinguish.
El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department reports that the plane had been heard by witnesses to have apparent engine problems, and was seen to dip downward into the ground while attempting a turn.
According to Federal Aviation Administration, there were multiple victims and no survivors of the crash. The names of victims are not being released until notification of families is confirmed.
“Our hearts go out to the families of those that perished in this tragic accident. Thanks to the quick and cooperative efforts by multiple agencies; the fire caused by this crash was put out quickly,” said Mayor Claire Fortier.
Earlier in the day, the 23rd Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show was held at Lake Tahoe Airport. This plane was not affiliated with the air show in any way.
The location of the plane crash is within El Dorado County limits and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department is the lead agency of this investigation. FAA and National Transportation Safety Board officials arrived on site today to perform an investigation and to identify the cause of the crash.

UPDATE 1:46PM: There are multiple victims to Saturday night's plane crash in South Lake Tahoe, confirmed El Dorado Sheriff's Office Lt. Pete Van Arnum. Investigators were processing the wreckage to confirm how many victims and their identities. Investigators do not believe the victims to be locals from the South Lake Tahoe area, he said. No information concerning the identity of the victims, or the plane will be released until positive confirmation has been made, he said. Investigators from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are assisting with the investigation.

10:36AM: Lake Tahoe News is reporting that it has exclusively learned from federal authorities that up to five people died in the plane crash on Saturday. Go here for the story. Meanwhile KOLO TV Channel 8 in Reno reports that an FAA official confirmed the plane was a Piper PA32.

UPDATE 6:55AM: A small airplane crashed in the Barton Meadows area in South Lake Tahoe sparking a wildland fire on Saturday night. Presumably there are no survivors. The crash was reported at 9:48 p.m. after the plane took off from Lake Tahoe Airport, said El Dorado County Sheriff's Lt. Pete Van Arnum early Sunday morning. Witnesses reported the plane was experiencing engine trouble and was seen moving downward before it crashed into flames, he said.

For the second time in less than a year, Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger III will speak at Lake Tahoe, this time as a special guest speaker of the 2012 Lake in the Sky Air Show, Aug. 24-26 at the Lake Tahoe Airport.
Sullenberger gained fame when he successfully landed US Airways Flight 1549, which had been disabled by striking a flock of Canada geese, in the Hudson River off Manhattan, New York City, on January 15, 2009. All of the 155 passengers and crew aboard the aircraft survived.
