Another step towards South Lake Tahoe cannabis ordinance

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be an ordinance regulating the retail sale of cannabis in South Lake Tahoe, that is certain, but when it will be in place is uncertain.

During a special meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council Tuesday afternoon and evening, several areas were discussed from zoning to processes, and many were narrowed down enough so the acting City Attorney, Sergio Rudin, can bring a draft back at the April 17 council meeting. If there are no major changes that document can be voted on as a "first reading" with an ordinance 30 days later.

Sass Talk: Vacation rentals, cannabis and Martin Hollay

More than a few people have asked me if I was frustrated by this last city council meeting and the 6.5 hour discussion regarding the revised VHR (Vacation Home Rental) ordinance. I thought the City Manager's introduction on why we were looking at a revised ordinance and the staff presentation on the revisions were excellent and on point. At first I was a little confused about some of the council questions of staff but reminded myself that the VHR sub-committee made up of Mayor Pro Tem David and myself have been living, sleeping and eating the VHR issue for over two years.

City of South Lake Tahoe looks at temporary ban of marijuana sales

There is no need to rush into an ordinance regulating the sale of marijuana in South Lake Tahoe. That was the overwhelming opinion of the SLT City Council Tuesday night after a special, four-hour long Cannabis Workshop.

"We owe it to our community to make sure we take every measure to protect them," said SLT Mayor Austin Sass.

Five businesses cited for selling alcohol to minors in Douglas County

Five Douglas County businesses were recently cited for selling alcohol to minors.

On November 2, Douglas County Sheriff's Office visited 28 businesses with liquor licenses to determine if they were being compliant with state law and not selling to minors.

Wal-Mart North County, Maverick, World Market, Grocery Outlet and Lucky Discount Liquor all received citations for furnishing alcohol to people under the age of 21. The employees who sold the alcohol was also cited.

The following businesses were checked and they successfully passed the alcohol compliance check.

Opinon: Children are our future and we need to make policy decisions that will benefit them.

Every new parent in Tahoe knows that finding quality childcare is a struggle. Facilities have long waiting lists; and only a few can offer State subsidies to low-income families.

According to Choices for Children a healthy childcare vacancy rate is 15%. That gives parents choice in where to put their child based on location, costs or personal preferences. Here in Tahoe our vacancy rate is just 5% and as our population continues to grow that percentage is likely to decrease further.

Lack of childcare in South Lake Tahoe an issue for parents and the community

You hear of the "great recession" causing issues in many areas from jobs and income to housing, but another victim is quality child care in South Lake Tahoe.

Prior to 2009 there were over 45 licensed day care providers on the South Shore, a majority of them licensed for 12 children and open evenings and weekends. Now, there are just 20, 12 of which are licensed for 12, the other eight are small licenses, for six children or less.

Taxi cabs in South Lake Tahoe now on more level playing field with rideshares

For months the operators of taxicabs in South Lake Tahoe have said the regulations they have to abide by when operating in the City limits were unfair since app-based rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft didn't have to follow the same controls.

After Tuesday's City Council meeting, the cabs and rideshares will now be on a more level playing field with less regulation.

The "cabbies" at the meeting all left happy with the 5-0 vote of the Council to reduce the number of regulations they once had to abide by, and with a new ordinance created through group meetings with both sides.

South Lake Tahoe Police warn of possible illegal dental activity

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has received unspecific information about someone in South Lake Tahoe performing basic dental work without a proper dental office or licenses. A check with two local dentists indicates that some people have needed dental repair work after receiving substandard dentistry possibly occurring in someone’s kitchen. It appears that such activity would function as a “cash” business and prey on the vulnerabilities of the poor.

The police department asks:

Reno Gazette Journal files lawsuit against Sparks over pot business licenses

The Reno Gazette-Journal filed a lawsuit Friday against the city of Sparks in an effort to compel them to release the names of medical marijuana business licensees.

As the newspaper expands its coverage of Nevada’s burgeoning medical marijuana industry, the RGJ has requested and collected copies of current business licenses for cultivation centers, dispensaries and production facilities in the area. Unpaid traffic fines and mushrooming fees have left 4.2 million Californians with suspended driver’s licenses — more than one-sixth of the licenses issued statewide — with poor people the hardest-hit, according to a newly published study that criticizes policies that take drivers off the road because of debts they can’t pay.

Large numbers applying for California Driver's Licenses under AB60

California AB60allows for the immigrants to apply for a license even though they don't have the normally required identification.

South Lake Tahoe not immune from fake vacation rental scams

Imagine packing up the car and heading up to South Lake Tahoe to enjoy a week at the large vacation home you just rented, only to find out that the house isn't yours to use when you arrive.

That scenario happened over the recent holiday when not one, not two, but four different groups thought they rented a home on Bonita Road near Heavenly Mountain Resort. All of the groups found a home for rent on Craigslist, a popular website used for buying, selling and renting.

Dog licenses and other El Dorado County fees can soon be paid on line

Dog owners in El Dorado County will soon be able to renew their dog's license on line as well as pay for other services provided by the county's Heath and Human Services Agency (HHSA).

Over the next six months, residents will be able to pay on line with credit or debit cards as well the current option of paying with a check, by mail or in person.

"Many residents have told us they'd like the ability to pay online or by credit or debit card, and we are happy that we can now make those options available to them," said Karen Coleman, Program Manager at HHSA.
