In the 1950's, the 23-unit Cedar Lodge was located at 2685 Lake Tahoe Blvd. The motel was eventually demolished and South Lake Tahoe dentist Dr. Jim Getzelman bought the property in hopes of developing it into a car wash.
"We’re trying the best to make this a very clean alternative to washing a car at home,” Getzelman said in March, 2008 of his plans to open the car wash in the fall of that year.

This year's theme is Earth and Space Science. All the activities will be ready to go and volunteers will be trained for their station.

Last week, on March 5, there were reports of travel time on the 9.3 mile route along Highway 50 from Stateline to Meyers taking eight hours, and from the Y to Meyers, four hours for the 4.3 mile trip.
Nevada bill would allow marijuana use in public

Sen. Tick Segerblom, D-Las Vegas, introduced legislation that would give local governments the power to permit public marijuana use in businesses such as bars, hotels, restaurants and concert venues.
"The sky is the limit," said Segerblom on Tuesday.
Grant proposals being accepted from those serving senior citizens

Friends of Seniors is a dedicated group of local volunteers who work independently during the year to raise funding for programs and services that improve and enhance the quality of life for seniors in El Dorado County.
This year they will be awarding a total of up to $10,000 in grants to El Dorado County nonprofits that support the wellness, life enrichment, dignity and independence of El Dorado County seniors.

City's new vision statement: We will reflect the national treasure in which we live

During a two-day long retreat and strategic planning session, the City Council and staff leaders met to discuss their strategies over the next two years, something they do right after every Council election.
City leaders will now get other agencies on the South Shore to join them in this mission, as well as the community. The vision will be reflected on City materials, a new logo, and be the "guiding principle in decision making."

Cowen, and his professional partner Rhonda Keen performed a Bollywood number that brought down the house.
Heads are shaved in South Lake Tahoe to raise money to fight childhood cancer

Boys and girls, men and women, families, fire fighters, ski patrol, students and dozens of others all lined up at Heavenly Mountain Resort Friday night to have their heads shaved, all in the name of children's cancer research. 110 people in total stopped by to "Brave the Shave" and raise funds to support research of childhood cancer.

This annual reading motivation and awareness program calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on this day, and schools in South Lake Tahoe joined in with guest readers in the classroom, and some joined in with Dr. Seuss inspired costumes.
South Shore casino income gains almost 11% in January
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/03/2017 - 12:32amCasinos in the state of Nevada registered a "gaming win" of $1,036,265,398 in January. This amount is 12.02 percent higher than January of 2016.
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
On the South Shore, the casino win was up 10.83 percent with their reported income of $17,105,546. Since the fiscal year began July 1, the local casinos have been on the positive side most months. Their "gaming win" since then has been $139,616,089, up 8.03 percent.

Local yoga instructor Susan Glasson is donating her services for two different yoga practices on the south shore in honor of fun and whimsical Dr. Suess's birthday.
On Tuesday, February 28, all funds received during a 6:30 p.m. yoga class at Kahle Community Center will go to the Tahoe Warm Room, the seasonal homeless shelter in South Lake Tahoe.
"Celebrate the wisdom and silliness of Dr. Seuss in this Yoga class that is for all ages," said Glasson. "Bring the kids and grandma too, all you need is your willingness to have some fun!" Beginners are welcome.

Potholes a high priority for City of South Lake Tahoe; Work to begin as weather permits

All across the country potholes wreak havoc with drivers each winter, causing damage to cars and tires as well as fraying a few nerves.
They seem to be everywhere, and drivers on many roads can be seen using defensive driving skills warranting an "ace" on a Sega GT or Daytona USA video game.

Many other local nonprofits in the area have similar stories of their origin. South Lake Tahoe’s nonprofit and other service organizations were forged out of volunteerism. Dedicated individuals looking to make a difference have laid the foundation for the strong culture of service that exists in our community.

With a backup at the chain control stop in Meyers, many are trying to circumvent not only the traffic, but the controls and causing issues on snow covered side roads.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/19/2017 - 11:33pmThe Tahoe Women's Community Fund has $29,000 to give to South Lake Tahoe non-profit groups and agencies who focus on five critical areas they've selected for funding in 2017. $10,000 grants will be given to those chosen whose focus is children and youth, and mental health and wellness. $3,000 will given in three grants: poverty and housing, education and literacy, and environment and the community.

Douglas County room tax may increase 1% to fund event center at Lake Tahoe

Overwhelming support for the tax increase was evident at the Douglas County Commissioner's meeting Thursday, where the elected officials voted 4-1 to approve the increase which would go into effect May 1, 2017.

LTCC passes resolution supporting diversity, undocumented students

This resolution follows the release of a Statement on Diversity from LTCC’s new Superintendent/President, Jeff DeFranco, published in the wake of White House changes to immigration policy.

Crews working nonstop on Highway 50 after three mudslides closed the road have been able to get all cleaned up and the road opened in both directions at 10:32 p.m. Tuesday.
South Lake Tahoe school boundaries discussed at next LTUSD board meeting
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/13/2017 - 10:44pmDuring the last meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Trustees, discussion about neighborhood schools and theme schools surrounded the proposed STEAM Academy at Al Tahoe Elementary when it reopens. STEAM - science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics - would be the focus of all students at the school, much as the themes surround all other local elementary schools.
At the request of the board, LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater will present the demographic data from each school in relation to where they reside.

Following decades of desegregation efforts and forced busing, lawsuits in the 1990s effectively brought a halt to desegregation efforts in the country. Neighborhood schools in South Lake Tahoe may have been segregated, not only based on race, but based on income levels.

Upper Truckee River recedes, 110.65 billion gallons of water added to Lake Tahoe in 2017

As of February 11, 2017, the lake is 3.14 feet above its natural rim with an elevation of 6,226.14 feet above sea level. To reach the maximum elevation, Lake Tahoe has just 2.86 feet to go, 1.14 to reach "full."

El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel is inviting all county residents to join in a discussion about the traffic congestion in Meyers every weekend and holiday, hampering locals in their movement along surface roads and the highway.
As visitors depart South Lake Tahoe, many have become aware of side streets via google and phone apps, thus finding another route that they think is getting them around the backup.
City Council approves new residential marijuana cultivation ordinance

With the passage of Proposition 64 in November, residents can grow up to six plants in their homes, and the City changed their medical marijuana ordinance to match the requirements of the new law legalizing recreational use.
Lake Tahoe weather: Heavy rain, winds and flooding in forecast

The next wave of the storm will hit Lake Tahoe Monday night when the snowfall is replaced with heavy rainfall. The warmer storm will bring a higher risk of flooding to the region, especially to the mountains and foothill locations. Strong winds will also increase the potential for downed trees and power lines.

Council to discuss marijuana ordinance for South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/05/2017 - 7:57pmWith the passage of Proposition 64 in November, South Lake Tahoe and other cities around the state are taking a look at their codes and regulations to be consistent with requirements that came with the legalization of marijuana for personal use. Californians voted 57.13 percent in favor of the proposition. On a local level, the vote was very close in El Dorado County with 50.07 percent of the voters against the legalization of marijuana.
2017 Miss Carson City and Miss Douglas County crowned
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/05/2017 - 1:51pmA year can pass very quickly. Just ask Samantha Byassee and Karrina Ferris, who were crowned Miss Carson City and Miss Carson City Outstanding Teen, respectively, in 2016.
One year later, the two reigning local titleholders in the Miss America organization turned their crowns over to the 2017 winners Saturday night on stage in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street in Carson City.

Every year, nearly four million young people are served by Boys & Girls Clubs. To celebrate these extraordinary efforts, Ross Stores, Inc. announced that it is partnering with Boys & Girls Clubs of America with a four-week program called, “Help Local Kids Learn.”
