The ultimate mission of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is to help youth thrive. Sadly, it is our students - not we, adult, decision-makers - who will most suffer climate change. LTUSD must also support the future health and well-being of our students.

So, in 2017, the School Board formally resolved to:

Increase reliance on clean, renewable energy sources to power the District’s facilities, in line with and in collaboration with, the City of South Lake Tahoe’s recent pledge to power 100 percent of our electricity use with renewable energy by 2030.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The "Take Care Bear" spent the recent holiday weekend helping spread the message of keeping Lake Tahoe sled hills clear of trash and sled debris.

While hundred of visitors snapped selfies with the bear, others mingled with him as he reminded all to throw away their broken sleds, rather than leaving them littered on the snow.

To coincide with the bear visits, a new billboard went up in Folsom, California with the same message.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The old Super 8 motel on Lake Tahoe Boulevard and adjacent Lotus Pho restaurant in South Lake Tahoe are currently closed as pre-construction activities have begun on a four-story 120-unit Hampton Inn and Suites.

The asbestos abatement has been completed as have the pre-demolition permits and the current two-story building is set for demolition soon. Once that happens, crews will be waiting for the May 1 grading date to get started on what is promised to be a "facelift to the area."

Measure B is up for a vote. I am voting NO because the Lake Valley Fire Protection District spends most of its revenue on salaries and benefits leaving nothing to pay for new equipment.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As local residents and St. Theresa Church parishioners, Kevin and Jean Bauwens wanted to help those in need and decided that sponsoring a Bread & Broth (B&B) Adopt A Day of Nourishment would provide them with the opportunity to help feed those experiencing hunger in our community. So, on February 2, Kevin and Jean, along with their daughter, Carrie Bauwens, and granddaughter, Isabel Telles, hosted the Monday Meal at St. Theresa Grace Hall.

With ski break coming up in two weeks and winter formal dance on Saturday, some students at South Lake Tahoe High School were busy with senior projects, while the basketball team travels to Dayton.

New term means new classes. Seniors that are enrolled in English or independent senior project this term began work this week. Here are some of the senior project proposals:

Tyler Pevenage is focusing on the performance of yoga. “I will be learning about something that, in the future, I can implement and use in my life.”

Bread & Broth’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) program provides community members the opportunity to partner with us in our efforts to serve a hot, nutritious meal to the less fortunate of our community. Providing a basic need is a way to not only ease hunger but also uplifts the lives and well-being of those who are struggling. Wanting to take advantage of this opportunity to help others, the Tahoe Wellness Center partnered with Bread & Broth (B&B) and hosted the Monday Meal as the Adopt A Day sponsor on January 20.

The Saint Joseph Community Land Trust would like to send our warmest appreciation to the many supporters and sponsors of their annual Pre-Thanksgiving Spaghetti Dinner, which was a huge success.

We especially want to thank the Knights of Columbus who dedicated their evening to providing a delicious, healthy meal, and to greeting and serving each of the over 100 attendees.

On December 23, Andy and Ellen Dauscher, and their daughters Ali and Carleigh, shared the blessings of the holiday season with the dinner guests attending Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal dinner. Thanks to their Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) sponsorship, the Dauscher Family funded B&B’s meal, and as a family, volunteered at the dinner to spread the holiday spirit and share the blessing of a holiday meal.

“What a wonderful way to start Christmas week,” shared Ellen. “We love helping our community members who are hungry. Thank you, Bread & Broth for letting us join you.”

STATELINE, Nev. - Many know him from "Hell's Kitchen," "MasterChef" and "Kitchen Nightmares," and now people will get to know world-renowned Chef Gordon Ramsay and experience his culinary skills at his new Lake Tahoe restaurant named after the hit reality show.

Caesars Entertainment has teamed up with Ramsay once again and has transformed the old Sage Room in Harveys Lake Tahoe to be the newest home for Hell's Kitchen.

Even before the doors open, over 12,000 reservations have been made for one of 151 seats in the 3,160 square foot restaurant located on the casino floor.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Camp Richardson Resort, known for its wonderful campgrounds and providing so many fun activities throughout the year for both Tahoe visitors and locals, was the Adopt A Day sponsor for Bread & Broth’s (B&B) Monday Meal on November 18.

Just in the definition, there is so much meaning for not only this day but for every day. As the Thanksgiving turkey, potatoes and stuffing are heaped onto dinner plates, thank yous are given for the ability to have the meal with family and friends. Thanksgiving reminds us to give thanks and to count our blessings. We are blessed and lucky to enjoy life, and we must remember that every day of our life.

Every year during the first week of November, Corporate Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. encourages their Ameriprise office team members across the country to participate in an activity to support their ‘National Day of Service’ giving campaign. For the last five years, the Tahoe South Shore’s Ameriprise office has elected to sponsor a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) and this year they hosted the Monday Meal on November 4 to participate in the annual Corporate campaign.

The Juvenile Service Council of El Dorado County (JSC) recently held our 2nd annual Holiday Fair. We are so grateful to so many in our community who made the success of the event possible.

It’s happening, already. You have probably seen them.....in every store....Christmas decorations! Every year it happens: Halloween and Thanksgiving are way-sided by Christmas displays. Here are a few suggestions for how to overcome the anxiety resulting from the displays that are distracting our attention.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is "Pay It Forward Day" in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, October 30 for a group of businesses based near the Heavenly Village.

All profits made during the day go back to the employees. While staff can do whatever they want with the money they are encouraged to reach out and help someone less fortunate.

"Let the ripples begin," said Ted Kennedy via Facebook as he encouraged people to support the businesses participating in the special day. He is a partner at the restaurants and gym taking part in "Pay It Forward Day."

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The ski resorts have yet to open in Lake Tahoe, but young racers and competitors headed to BlueZone Sports Saturday for "Competition Day" where they had special prices and prizes.

One of those prizes went to 14-year-old Sebastian Kilgore, a freshman at South Tahoe High School. Blue Zone Sports selected the young man who competes in slopestyle and rail events in the USAA South Tahoe Series. Kilgore had a very successful 2018-19 season and placed fourth in Nationals where his "Front 630 Off Rail" won the "Best Trick" award.

Heath Ledger would've been proud. Joaquin Phoenix's take on the iconic character is nothing short of amazing if not brilliant in the "Joker." I had been wanting to see this film since it first started shooting knowing the cast involved but Joaquin's performance surpassed even my expectations.

Californians, including the people of Lake Tahoe, love our public lands. We love the cold deep blue waters of Lake Tahoe, the rugged mountains, and the varied forests that are part of the nearly 100 million acres of land all Californians can claim ownership of. We love these public lands not just because of their natural beauty, but because they are central to our way of life. Many of us live here, or moved here, because of what they provide - culture, lifestyle, and livelihood.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – On Wednesday, September 18, Angela Harvey, RN was honored by the DAISY Foundation™ and Barton Health with the international DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses.

Angela, a nurse at Barton Memorial Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), is the first person to receive this award at Barton Health. The DAISY Award® recognizes the extraordinary, compassionate care that nurses provide patients and families every day. The award is one initiative of the DAISY Foundation™ to express gratitude to the nursing profession.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a day like any other for Daniel Noah Peterson. A trip to deliver fuel to South Lake Tahoe gas stations before heading home for the night. Doing a job he loved to do.

Jennifer (Jenny) Susanne Scott Fox came into this world at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, California on November 8, 1980, and passed away at the age of 38 August 9, 2019.
