Volunteer opportunities at Bread & Broth

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bread & Broth is a non-profit, all volunteer organization whose mission is to help ease hunger in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community. They are looking for community members who are interested in joining their dedicated team of volunteers.

Here are a few of the many available volunteer opportunity openings for contributing to Bread & Broth's (B&B) programs:

El Dorado County foster youth receive gift of laptops

Ten El Dorado County area foster youth were all smiles last Saturday, August 18, 2018, when they received the generous gift of technology -- their very own new laptops. The laptops were given to the youth during a small gathering at the El Dorado County Office of Education in Placerville.

South Lake Tahoe teen up for Youth of the Year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If the name Mya Rossi rings a bell, you would be correct. South Tahoe Now has carried two stories on the 14-year-old, one when she became the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Youth of the Year, and the second when she was awarded the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Scholarship to attend Science Camp of America: Air and Space in Hawaii.

Now Mya has made it to the Northern California Regional Finals for the Boys and Girls Club of America Youth of the Year Competition.

New telephone scam targeting South Lake Tahoe residents

South Lake Tahoe residents in South Lake Tahoe have been receiving calls from people pretending to be from Microsoft, and the SLT Police Department wants to alert the public on the scam.

A local senior couple was recently contacted, and the scammers told them they had overpaid Microsoft in the past and Microsoft wanted to refund them the money. The scammer had the victims turn on their computer and give them remote access.

Jamie Anderson once again nominated for ESPY award

Her name in on the list with Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Von Miller, Cam Newton, Kyle Busch and Roger Federer. South Lake Tahoe's Jamie Anderson was nominated this week by ESPN for a 2016 ESPY as "Best Female Action Sports Athlete."

Amgen Tour of California finishes in Sacramento

After 782 miles and eight days of racing, 23 year-old Julian Alaphilippe (FRA) of Etixx – Quick-Step Pro Cycling Team clinched the 2016 Amgen Tour of California championship, becoming the youngest rider to hold that title in the race’s 11 years. U.S. National Road Race Champion Megan Guarnier (Glens Falls, New York) of Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team also celebrated victory in Sacramento as the four-day Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease™ Women’s Race Empowered with SRAM which concluded along with the men’s event.

Countdown to Amgen: Rosters announced

All eyes are on California this week as the Amgen Tour of California gets underway in San Diego on Sunday, May 15. One of the most important races on the international cycling calendar, Amgen brings some of the brightest cycling stars in the world to the state as they travel 782 miles in different stages from Southern to Northern California for eight days.

Website help needed by League to Save Lake Tahoe

The League to Save Lake Tahoe is updating their website and they are looking for volunteers to help them accomplish this feat.

They need volunteers to help move their web content from the old platform to the new one. They will have two fun, and social, nights with beer, pizza and wine in exchange for some assistance.

Webinar on Wild and Scenic Rivers being held by Forest Service

Local rivers may be eligible for inclusions in the National Wild and Scenic River system, and the Forest Service is asking for public comment as they evaluate the rivers in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

A webinar will be held on March 31, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. to explain the process being used for evaluation by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).

The LTBMU encourages public comment as part of the evaluation process, which is in response to objections raised during the LTBMU Land Management Plan revision.

Women As Change Makers: Leading and Thriving in the 21st Century

Local Photographer's Work to be Microsoft Wallpaper and Background Images

John Cocores had forgotten about submitting photos to an online casting call hosted by Microsoft. That is, until this week when the computer software giant contacted him about using his photos for the background on computers as well as wallpaper that can be purchased by users.

Forest Service to Hold Webinar on Land Management Plan

A webinar to explain the final Land Management Plan that will guide the management of National Forest System lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin over the next 15 years will be held by the U.S. Forest Service on Tuesday, January 14 at 2 pm.

The hour long webinar will explain the plan, highlight changes from the draft, and outline the remainder of the plan revision process and include a brief presentation, followed by a question and answer period. The webinar will be archived on the LTBMU website for later viewing.

TahoeChamber offers Microsoft Office Classes

The next two Tech Tuesday courses will focus on tips & tricks for using Microsoft Office suites. These workshops are suitable for all levels of computer skills, particularly businesses and individuals already using Microsoft products who would like to learn to use them more effectively.

In November, Sanne Steele, The Software Consultant and Microsoft Certified partner will be taking attendees on an interactive tutorial of Word, Excel, and Outlook. December’s course will be more graphically oriented, diving into PowerPoint and Publisher.

3-D Sandbox exhibit brings Lake Tahoe watersheds to life

Sandboxes have come a long way. A new interactive, augmented-reality exhibit brings watersheds to life at the University of California, Davis' Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village, Nev.

Participants run their hands through real sand, forming mountains, lakes and rivers, while a 3-D camera and digital projector allowusers to create virtual topography in real time, make it "rain" and watch where the water flows.

Kokanee Literary Journal Seeking Submissions

Lake Tahoe Community College is seeking submissions for the 25th annual edition of The Kokanee. Submissions of up to five poems or 10 pages (2,500 words) of prose (fiction or creative nonfiction/memoir) are being accepted until June 21 at kokanee@ltcc.edu.

Submissions should be attached as a Microsoft Word document, and “Kokanee Submission” should be in the subject
line. Submissions that do not follow the guidelines will not be considered.

Chamber, college offer certified QuickBooks workshop series

TahoeChamber has partnered with the CONNECT Community Education program at Lake Tahoe Community College to offer a certified QuickBooks workshop series designed to save you money and time. This three-part series, taught by Nationally Certified Expert QuickBooks Instructor Christa Peterson, will help you learn to use QuickBooks properly and with confidence.
