Nevada celebrates 154th birthday with parade and full slate of activities

From contests to exhibits, food and beverages of all kinds, Native dancing, hot air balloons, concerts, a carnival celebration at Mills Park and the famed Nevada Day parade, there is something for everyone throughout the long weekend.

Guide to Nevada Day activities in Carson City

The Battle Born state celebrates its admission to the United States on the last Friday of October, with the annual Nevada Day parade on Saturday. New this year is a ‘Passport to Downtown’ event on Friday. Also new this year is the one-night-only curated art show, Capital Collage, on Friday night featuring over 20 diverse artists and organizations.

A parade, competitions of strength and facial hair, hot air balloons, bloody marys, a carnival, pow wow, and free chili are just a few of the festivities awaiting the capital city on Saturday.
The party begins Friday this year with a ribbon cutting celebration of the 'new' downtown. The Nevada State Museum hits its 75th Anniversary this year and will have a day full of fun and surprises. Keep reading to see where you need to take advantage of all the best this holiday weekend has to offer.
Minden resident wins iconic Nevada welcome sign
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/27/2016 - 9:03pmFour Nevada residents are now the proud owners of iconic "Welcome to Nevada" signs, old and obsolete signs that have graced the state's highways for 25 years.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) held a contest to find new owners, and nearly 14,500 residents entered the free raffle via phone, web site and social media, with winners selected randomly.
The four winners are from each region of the state: Northwest: Jennifer Bills (Reno), Southwest: Anna Thomas (from Minden), Northeast: Kaitlyn Tueller, Southeast: Breanna Kirkham.
Nevada raffling off iconic welcome signs
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/02/2016 - 8:08pmThe 25-year-old iconic "Welcome to Nevada" signs from highways around the state are going to be raffled off to some lucky residents.
The Nevada Department of Transportation is replacing the old, obsolete signs, depicting a lone miner that once greeted travelers to the state. They held a recent contest for Nevada high school students for the design of a new series of signs.
Historic Nevada State Prison to open for tours

The public will soon be able to tour the historic Nevada State Prison in Carson City. Opened in 1862, the prison opened on the site of the Warm Springs Hotel even before the territory became a state. The prison's quarry supplied the materials needed to build the State Capitol.
The Carson City Chamber of Commerce 2016 Leadership Class will offer the prison tours as a fundraiser from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, April 16.
With the legalization of gaming in Nevada, the prison allowed inmates to gamble in the Bull Pen, a casino that was set up in 1932 and closed in 1967.

Nevada became the 36th state on October 31, 1864, just in time for the North to win the Civil War using the needed income brought to the Union from the state's silver mines. On October 31, 2015, Nevadans and visitors will be heading to the state's capitol to enjoy the Nevada Day events.
Apple Hill, El Dorado wineries to fill up with Nevadans this weekend
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/28/2015 - 7:49pmWhile many may head into Carson City on October 31 to celebrate the state's birthday and parade, thousands of Northern Nevadans will be heading over the Sierra into El Dorado County to enjoy time at the county's winery and Apple Hill regions.
Why you ask?
Nobody really knows the answer, but the El Dorado Winery Association is embracing it.
"It took us several years to figure out why we were so busy on Halloween," said Paul Bush, the owner and winemaker of Madroña Vineyards.

Congress was in a hurry to have the support of the Republican dominated Nevada territory for President Abraham Lincoln's reelection. The three electoral votes Nevada would bring helped bring the end of slavery when Lincoln was re-elected just 9 days after Nevada became a state.
Nevada Celebrates 149th Birthday With Parade

The annual gathering to celebrate the heritage of Nevadans has been marked with a carnival, contests, dinners, dances and other events. The big highlight of the birthday celebration will be the 75th Annual Nevada Day Parade in Carson City on Saturday, October 25.

April 22, 2013 (All day) The winners of the Carson Memories photo contest were announced this week in a ceremony held at the Carson Nugget.
The Carson Memories contest asked participants to submit their favorite photos demonstrating something special or distinct about the Carson City area.
The winning photos, along with the other select photos, are being incorporated into an exhibit created by Gardnerville artist, Beverly Caputo. The exhibit is featured next to a recently finished mural painted by Caputo. The mural depicts key people, places and things of historical relevance to Carson City.

They are making personal visits to those who helped bring the Traveling Wall Memorial to Mills Park for “Battle Born Days” and the Nevada Day celebrations.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will participate in several high-visibility traffic enforcement details over the Nevada Day / pre-Halloween weekend.
During the late evening and early morning hours of Friday through Sunday, October 28th-30th, deputies of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, working in conjunction with deputies of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, will conduct increased DUI enforcement patrols on the highways and roadways within Douglas County.
