First tornado warning issued for the Lake Tahoe basin; Waterspout and funnel cloud spotted

The National Weather Service (NSW) in Reno today issued their very first tornado warning for the Lake Tahoe basin.

At 3:45 p.m. a severe thunderstorm warning was issued first for the middle of Lake Tahoe near Glenbrook. At that time one of their team members saw a funnel cloud over Incline Village and sent in a photo, so the tornado warning was issued immediately.

Even though Wednesday's warning was the first for Lake Tahoe, there have been five issued for northwest Nevada since 2000 according to Scott McGuire of the NWS Forecast Office in Reno.

Rain and thunder return to Lake Tahoe; Drier by the end of week

A low pressure system is off the California coast through Tuesday night, bringing with it chances for showers and thunderstorms starting Monday afternoon. Tuesday through Wednesday will bring more widespread thunderstorm coverage. Drier weather returns by Friday as a front moves through the region. Above average temperatures through Monday will cool to near or slightly below average by late week according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Here is their forecast:

Hazy skies around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra

Have you noticed hazy skies around Lake Tahoe today? No, there are no fires nearby but the Air Quality Index (AQI) is showing a "moderate" range.

There are two fires southwest of Yosemite near Mariposa, but winds are most likely not strong enough to carry that smoke into the Tahoe Basin and Northern Nevada. The Spring Fire started Sunday afternoon and has now burned 60 acres. Nearby the four-day old Ben Fire is 95 percent contained.

Temps in high 70s this week in Lake Tahoe; Chance of rain Wednesday

Temperatures are flirting 80, and in fact the initial forecast for this week in South Lake Tahoe had two days with 80s. The National Weather Service has dropped their forecast by a couple of degrees, but still a fabulous weekend ahead for Tahoe.

There is a 30 percent chance of showers on Wednesday but just for the day.

The small stream flood advisory due to snowmelt has been extended through Tuesday for Plumas, Mono, Alpine, El Dorado, Placer, Sierra, Nevada, Douglas and Washoe Counties along with Western Carson City.

Here is the NWS forecast:

The 2017 fire season outlook

With one of the biggest winters we have experienced in years and the snowpack level at 200-300 percent of normal, it is expected that the excessive precipitation will likely push the start of the 2017 fire season back a couple months.

“Below normal significant wildland fire potential is expected to develop across northern portions of the Great Basin and far western Nevada in May and June,” reports the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC).

However, the low risk scenario will not last forever once the moisture is gone.

One day of rain, snow and wind, then sunny and warm

The National Weather Service (NWS) has updated the South Lake Tahoe forecast, and what was once a week of rain and snow is now full of sunshine and warming temperatures after one day of wet weather.

There is a Lake Wind Advisory for Tahoe from 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday with winds from the southwest to west, 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph. Waves on the lake could be 2 to 4 feet from mid lake to northeast and east shores.

Here is the latest NWS forecast:

Tonight - Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Yes, that's snow in the South Lake Tahoe forecast

2017 is proving to be full of surprises, and with snow in the forecast for late Mother's Day and Monday, its just one more surprise before summer arrives. Its been a spring full of "sun, rain, snow, repeat."

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) there is a Lake Wind Advisory in effect until 8:00 a.m. Friday, Winds will be from the southwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Waves from 2 to 3 feet, but some spots will see waves up to 4 feet. Highest waves will be on the north and east shores.

The NWS forecast:

Flood Advisory issued for the Truckee River from North Lake Tahoe to Reno

Water management officials increased the flow out of Lake Tahoe Wednesday afternoon, prompting warnings of minor flooding along the Truckee River from the dam to Truckee, and abnormally high flows along the river through Reno and Sparks. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood advisory for Placer, Nevada, and Southern Washoe County County through 2:45 p.m. Tuesday May 2.

High winds in South Lake Tahoe; heavy snow and rain on the way

A late season atmospheric river will bring another significant precipitation event to the Sierra and western Nevada. Near saturated soils and a mostly ripe low to mid elevation snowpack will contribute to increased runoff. This will increase flood potential, especially along creeks and streams, Friday into Saturday. This event isn`t expected to be as strong as storms in January and February but is a significant precipitation event for April.

The winds have arrived in South Lake Tahoe, and three weather related warnings have come with them: wind, snow and flooding.
