Winter weather advisory in effect 10 p.m. Tuesday through 10:00 a.m. Wednesday

A quick storm will pass through Lake Tahoe beginning Tuesday evening, leaving the busy travel day of Wednesday fairly clear, though cold.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 10:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. Wednesday with the heaviest snow expected between midnight and 5:00 a.m.

They are called for snow, 2"-4" at lake level, up to 8" near the crest by Wednesday morning.

Winds will increase Tuesday evening with them coming out of the southwest 10-20 mph with gusts 34-40 mph possible. Resulting waves on the lake will be 2-4'.

Sunny Veterans Day weekend in Lake Tahoe; quick storm with snow coming mid-week

Major changes are on their way to the Sierra, but Veterans Day starts off a nice weekend before the fast moving storm arrives on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service says to expect snow levels rapidly falling along the cold front Wednesday, and possible into Thursday morning. Gusty winds are anticipated Tuesday into Wednesday. Snowfall amounts, and exact timing of storm will become more evident to forecasters as the storm gets closer.

But before then, get out and enjoy Fall in South Lake Tahoe!

The NWS forecast:

Storm bringing up to 18" of snow at upper elevations of Lake Tahoe

The next storm heading to South Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada is bringing with it much cooler temperatures and snow. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the region from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Sunday for areas above 6,500 feet.

Snow accumulations should be 6" to 18" above 7,000 feet with up to 6" down to 6,500 feet. Up to 2" at lake level are possible.

The snow levels wills tart around the 7,000 ft level, lowersing to 6,000 feet by late Sunday morning.

11 billion gallons of water added to Lake Tahoe; Lake rises 3" during latest storm

South Lake Tahoe saw over six inches of rain during the series of three storms over the weekend, which did a lot more than bring a little snow to upper elevations.

The storm also send an estimated 11 billion gallons of water into Lake Tahoe according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. This is equivalent to the average total consumptive water use in a year from the Truckee River by the Truckee Meadows Water Authority. The average metered household in the Truckee Meadows uses about 121,000 gallons a year.

Flash flood warning for Emerald Fire and Little Valley Fire areas

There is a flash flood warning on Saturday for the Little Valley and Emerald Fire burn scars.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued the warning for Saturday afternoon through late Saturday night.

Another band of heavy rain is expected Saturday afternoon with rainfall rates over over 1" in three hours in the areas of the burns. The rain could trigger debris flows and rock falls, which have already been reported across Highway 89 near the Emerald Fire.

These rocks and debris may affect area homes and highways, the NWS said.

Fresno County fire causing hazy skies in Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada

A wildfire burning west of the town of Coalinga in Fresno County is responsible for the widespread haze through the Lake Tahoe basin, the Sierra Nevada and Western Nevada.

The National Weather Service in Reno said the Mineral Fire is sending smoke north due to a southerly flow in the lower atmosphere.

So far, fire has burned through 5,000 acres of land in steep terrain. It started on Tuesday and the cause is under investigation.

There are 1,000 firefighters on the scene and several evacuations are in place.

Record temperatures expected in South Lake Tahoe and around region

If you like heat, then you're sure to love the weather in South Lake Tahoe Thursday and Friday when records are expected to drop from Reno to Mammoth. South Lake Tahoe is forecast to hit 91 degrees both days, beating records previously set in 2009.

The National Weather Service in Reno is also telling people in all areas of the Sierra and western Nevada, except for the Lake Tahoe basin, to expect very isolated areas of thunderstorms with an increased threat of lightning fires.

HIgh fire danger in Lake Tahoe basin Sunday and Monday

Hot and dry weather will continue in the region according to the National Weather Service, but with the warm temperatures and low humidity comes a "Fire Weather Warning."

NWS is forecasting gusty winds and high fire danger on Sunday and Monday and they are urging extreme caution, especially near dry grass and brush.

Gusty winds and waves up to 3 feet will produce hazardous conditions for boating, kayaking and paddle boarding. Calm lake conditions in the morning can quickly turn dangerous once the winds kick up, so remember to always wear your personal flotation device.

Windy and dry in Lake Tahoe basin and Northern Nevada: Red Flag Warning up

Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada are not alone this weekend as a combination of hot and dry conditions with gusty winds will bring dangerous fire weather conditions to a large portion of the western U.S. Any fire in this region will have the potential to grow rapidly out of control so extreme caution is urged near dry grass and brush. Numerous Red Flag Warnings are in effect from the Sierra Nevada to the High Plains of South Dakota.

Lake Tahoe reaches its peak; heat wave to hit South Shore

Lake Tahoe's water level has likely peaked, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

With most of the snow around the Tahoe Basin melted, water outflow due to evaporation into the air is now greater than the inflow into the lake. The lake peaked at just over 6,224 feet about a week ago.

The forecast will only help the evaporation rate. An average of 1,400,000 tons of water evaporates from the surface of Lake Tahoe every 24 hours, 360,000 acre feet a year. T

From the NWS:

Wednesday - Sunny, with a high near 79. West wind 5 to 10 mph.

Fast moving storm to bring rain and snow to Lake Tahoe; back in 60s by Sunday

A relatively weak Spring storm is headed to Lake Tahoe, bringing with it modest rain and snow amounts as it moves through the Sierra and western Nevada on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Snow levels will be down to around 4500 - 5500 feet. Although it will be cold enough for widespread snow showers, there won't be much in the way of snow totals with this storm though the West Slope should see more than the Lake Tahoe Basin and Reno. On Wednesday, the NWS in Sacramento forecast 4"-8" for the higher elevations.

New storm headed to Lake Tahoe: One foot of snow possible at lake level

Could this be a "Miracle March?" With almost two feet of new snow added to ski resorts last weekend, and another two feet expected this weekend, signs are pointing to getting well above average on the Sierra snowpack totals. The precipitation is there, but all depends on the temperature.

The National Weather Service in Reno today said, "Higher confidence this afternoon with potent winter storm expected to arrive Saturday with rain, snow and wind this weekend into Monday morning."
