SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the 20th of each month in 2020, the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation (LTEF) is teaming up with Lake Tahoe AleWorx for a fundraising series where all proceeds during the evening will go to the special projects of LTEF.
Each month LTEF and South Tahoe Now will spotlight the event and feature information about a different area of the local education programs offered through Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and supported by LTEF.
The spotlight for February is Outdoor Education and the amazing contributions community partners have made to a generation of students. Each year, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Heavenly Mountain Resort, the Lake Tahoe Ice Arena, and South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center Pool give free opportunities for a thousand kids to learn to ski, skate, and swim.
Heavenly Mountain Resort provides all LTUSD fifth graders two great experiences free of charge; a week to learn to ski or snowboard including equipment and lessons, and a snowshoe experience in partnership with the South Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition.
Sierra-at-Tahoe offers a free season pass to all third graders and above who get straight A's for two of three trimesters the prior school year. John Rice said the program was started to get students on the cusp academically in the 1990s to get motivated and strive for those A's.
The City's Recreation Center treats all fourth graders to a week of pool time and lessons to learn to swim. They have been doing this since 1991.
Next door, the Lake Tahoe Arena Ice Rink hosts all third graders for four days on the ice to learn how to ice skate. They also offer an hour of free skating after school for all elementary students three days a week. There are currently two women who started skating at the ice arena who are now playing NCAA Division I hockey.
Representatives from these great community partners will be at the February 20th event along with fun raffle items. For many local kids, this is their first time on skis, snowshoes, skates or in the pool. What a great opportunity to learn a life-long healthy activity. And who knows, maybe see more future Tahoe Olympians.
The fundraiser starts at 5:00 p.m. on February 20 at Lake Tahoe Alexorx located in The Crossing at the Y in South Lake Tahoe.
Funds raised on the 20th of each month will go to LTEF to fund activities throughout the school year for students at Lake Tahoe Unified School District.
