Improvisation Group Brings the Laughs to LTCC

The group is the resident improvisation company of the Theatre Arts Department at Lake Tahoe Community College. Lake Tahoe's Julia Mancuso Wins 4th Olympic Medal; Takes the Bronze in Sochi

Lake Tahoe's Julia Mancuso produced a true champion performance Monday, becoming the first American skier in history to win a medal in three straight Olympic Winter Games with her bronze in a tricky super combined event at the Rosa Khutor alpine center.

Mancuso skied into the lead in the downhill portion and then ripped up the slalom course that bumped nine skiers off course, finishing third behind gold winner German Maria Hoefl-Riesch and silver winner Austrian Nicole Hosp.

Lake Tahoe Skiers Nominated for U.S. Olympic Alpine Team

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Sunday nominated 20 athletes to the U.S. Olympic Alpine Ski Team that will compete in Sochi next month. The team is highlighted by Olympic gold medalists Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) and World Champion Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO).

South Tahoe High Production of Mel Brook's Young Frankenstein Sure to be a Hit

Lots of fun and great laughs are promised during the South Tahoe High performance of Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein, The Musical, which will hit the stage of the school's new theater over the next two weekends.

Based on the 1974 movie, Mel Brooks added music and dance numbers to bring the play to a whole new level. "The kids have been working hard with long hours, and they're enjoying it," according to Liz "Niv" Niven, the school's theater director since 1997.

County Arts Council Adds Lake Tahoe Board Member

PLACERVILLE, CA - El Dorado Arts Council (EDAC) announced today that Kim Wyatt, publisher of Bona Fide Books, was appointed to the nonprofit arts organization’s board of directors.

South Tahoe High Performing Arts Boosters Host Gala

The South Tahoe High School Performing Arts Booster Association (PABA) Gala will be held on Saturday, January 25 at 5 pm. For just $30 per ticket you'll get a steak and lobster dinner prepared by local residents, the Romagnolo family. Discounted entrance tickets into the theater department's performance of "Young Frankenstein" immediately after dinner are also available for $10 each.

Dinner is at 5 pm and will be held in the STHS Studen Union. The play will start after dinner in the school's new theater.

Accompanying the accomplished musicians of the RJO are vocalists Cami Thompson and Kenn Pettiford, international Tap star Sam Weber and performers from the Sierra Nevada Ballet under the direction of Rosine Bena. The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Vern Scarbrough, will open the holiday performance which starts at 7:30 pm.

How does a community deal with and recover from a tragedy that shocked the entire world? This November, the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Theatre Arts Department will explore that question in its production of “The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later,” by Moisés Kaufman, Stephen Belber, Leigh Fondakowski, and Greg Pierotti. The play seeks to understand a town that is forced to cope with the aftermath of a brutal hate crime, while also facing their own biases and fears under the media spotlight.

Peanutcracker Ballet Ideal for Kids this Holiday Season

The Sierra Nevada Ballet will present the popular “PEANUTCRACKER – The Story in Nut Shell” on December 6 and 7 in Carson City and December 17th in Reno, Nv. Based on Lev Ivanov‘s original ballet “The Nutcracker”, PEANUTCRACKER is a shorter, 45-minute narrated version that is “designed for families with younger children to introduce them to the wonderful world of ballet,” noted Rosine Bena, Artistic Director of the Sierra Nevada Ballet. Bena who wrote and choreographed this traditional holiday show.

Heavenly Receives 6-8” of Snow; Kicks Off Snowmaking for November 22 Opening

In anticipation of a November 22, 2013 opening day, Heavenly Mountain Resort has fired up the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system and has begun making snow at the top of the Gondola and on California Trail. The 2013-14 school year is off to a great start! We have had much excitement since August 19th with our first and hopefully, annual Round Hill Pines Beach Bash which was held on September 8th. Festivities included hot dogs and hamburgers, a raffle, and a silent auction. Families were able to get acquainted and re-acquainted and the kids were still enjoying the long summer sun. Thanks to our awesome Parent-Teacher Club, we are well on our way to funding many academic opportunities for enrichment and intervention as well as materials and resources for our teachers.

This production commemorates the 15th anniversary of Matthew Shepard’s death. Several events will be presented at the college in association with this production, including a screening of the brand new documentary film, “Matthew Shepard is a Friend of Mine.”

Barton Foundation golf tournament raises more than $14,000 for Community Health Endowment

Barton Foundation's 19th annual Golf Tournament and fundraiser held on Thursday, June 20 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course raised more than $14,000 for Barton’s Community Health Endowment fund. The Hawaiian themed, “Tiki Tee Off and Lei Up Luau Golf Tournament hosted a field of 108 golfers and 160 luau attendees – complete with a roasted pig, raffle prizes and a performance by the Ukuleles of Tahoe.
