NOTE: Most traffic-interfering work will be restricted until 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 5 due to the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

SPECIAL EVENT

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from the “Y” at Lake Tahoe Boulevard and State Route 89 North to Rufus Allen Boulevard: Motorists can expect a moving closure of both lanes from 10 a.m. to Noon Monday July 4 for the City of South Lake Tahoe 4th of July parade.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work has resumed on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by spring 2017.

Forest Service to start opening Tahoe recreational facilities

The opening dates for recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin have been announced, with the first ones set to e ready April 30, 2016.

Kiva Picnic area, Baldwin and Nevada beaches, Big Meadow trailhead, the McKinney Rubicon Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) area and Sawmill Pond, Eagle Falls, Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor parking areas will open April 30, 2016.

The Tallac Historic Site opens April 30, 2016, and will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 21, 2016 for Memorial Day weekend.

The Sandpit OHV area opens May 10, 2016.

South Tahoe High grad killed in single car accident near Pope Beach

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol continue to investigate a single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a South Lake Tahoe teen early Saturday morning.

According to EDSO Lt. Jim Byers, 19-year-old Jillian Pruitt was the lone occupant in a car that collided with a tree on State Route 89 at 3:40 a.m. March 26, 2016.

Byers said the accident is still under investigation and few details are available at this time. He said that circumstance of the crash are making it complex.

Pope-Baldwin bike path may see closures and delays

Part of the Pope-Baldwin Bike Path will be rerouted near Camp Richardson to give riders a better, safer experience.

In order to implement this change, the U.S Forest Service will have to close portions of the trail over the next few weeks. They do not expect the closures to last more than half of a day, and alternate routes will be offered when possible.

This path links the U.S. Forest Service recreation facilities from Pope Beach to Baldwin Beach along Highway 89.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

Mild Weather allows Lake Tahoe recreation spots to open early

Beaches, parks, trailheads, campgrounds and popular Lake Tahoe viewing areas will start opening on April 1 for the 2015 season, almost two months ahead of schedule.

A mild winter has allowed the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) to start opening the popular areas but they won't be fully opened since they won't be fully staffed until closer to summer.

It's race weekend in South Lake Tahoe!

Right on the heels of the Tour de Tahoe Bike Race around the lake, the Lake Tahoe Marathon has begun Race Week.

On Friday, racers competed in the Emerald Bay Full and Half Marathons. There are 10 different races on Saturday: The Cal Neva Marathon, the Tahoe Nevada Half Marathon, a 5 mile Kayak Race, two and five mile Stand Up Paddle Races, Swim Races, Duathlon, Kids Fun Run, Super Hero 5k, 72 mile Loop the Lake Ultra Race and the Tahoe Double Marathon.

If that weren't enough action, Sunday is the main event plus 10k and 20 mile races.

1962 record making swim across Lake Tahoe relived

Some people, when they first see Lake Tahoe, think how it'd be nice to boat on top of the glass like water. Others imagine fishing on the lake stocked with big fish, while yet others think about how nice it would be to sit at the quiet and scenic shore and enjoy the sun and the view.

To nine year old Erline Christopherson, all she thought when first saw the crystal blue waters was how she'd like to swim across it. The dream was born that day in 1955.

USFS Reports 169 Incidents on South Lake Tahoe Beaches July 4th

Citations, warnings and medical assistance were given to 169 people during holiday celebrations on South Lake Tahoe beaches operated by the U.S. Forest Service on July 4th.

• 32 - Personal Possession of marijuana (Cites and Warnings)
• 31 - Minors in Possession of Alcohol (Cites)
• 8 – Combination of Arrests for Disorderly Conduct, Cocaine, Crystal Meth, LSD, Pills, Warrant, & Probation Violations
• 12 - 415 Incidents
• 72 – Alcohol Prohibition violations (Cites and Warnings)
• 14 – Medical Aids

Lake Tahoe Marathon is More Than Just a Race

For some, their only connection to the Lake Tahoe Marathon is the billboard sign they see attached to a pick up around South Lake Tahoe. For others, it’s an amazing series of races that fill the south and west shore for several days every fall.

The man behind the race is Les Wright, long time South Lake Tahoe local. It is tough to find time to talk to Les these days. He is working 18 hour days and the time left for rest finds his mind full of marathon details, planning and organizing.

Camp Richardson campground, road plan proposal up for public comment

A 30-day public comment period began Thursday on plans associated with upgrades at the Camp Richardson Resort campground along Highway 89 near South Lake Tahoe.
Plans include upgrades and enhancements to the campground day use facilities as well as BMPs and road improvements to ease traffic congestion around the campground and along Highway 89 at the popular Lake Tahoe resort.

Expect road delays for Lake Tahoe Marathon weekend

Lake Tahoe Marathon powers up Sept. 28-30

You may run, walk, swim, paddle, or pedal one or more of the 30-plus events during the Lake Tahoe Marathon weekend, Sept. 28-30.
The Lake Tahoe Marathon starts Sunday on Commons Beach in Tahoe City and finishes on Pope Beach near South Lake Tahoe. On Friday and Saturday you can run two other different marathons or half marathons, the Emerald Bay Marathon on Friday and on Saturday the Cal-Neva Marathon. Optimist Kids Fun Run

The South Lake Tahoe Optimist Kids’ Fun Run will be held Saturday, September 29th, at Pope Beach. Runners 13 years old and under from all over the country are invited to participate in this annual event. The distances range from ⅛ mile (200 m) for those 5 years and under to 1½ mile for the 12-13 years old age group. All runners will receive a medal, free hot dog and drink. Forest Service continues project to eliminate invasive weeds from the Lake Tahoe Basin

One parachutist is missing and two others were rescued this morning when the trio splashed down in the water near Pope Beach.

Report: parachutists in distress near Pope Beach

Two, possibly three people in parachutes reportedly in distress have been reported missing near Pope Beach in South Lake Tahoe this morning.

One parachutist may have been rescued from the water, according to initial reports.

South Lake Tahoe Fire and Rescue is looking for the parachutists who apparently landed on the water, and have positioned themselves at Pope Beach, Camp Richardson and the Tahoe Keys, according to police scanner traffic.

Rescue boats have also been launched.
