Guest Columnist: Tips for winter disaster preparedness

In today’s world, the reasons for being prepared seem to be escalating. From threats of terrorist attacks to huge storms that could knock out the power supply, the only way you can make sure your family will survive is to take steps to ensure you are prepared. It’s not always going to be possible to count on the government or community resources in times of trouble, so taking some time to put together your own emergency provisions can be the determining factor in whether your family eats or even survives the emergency.

South Lake Tahoe's Top Stories of 2014

When reflecting over the past year it's hard to remember all that happened in one's life, unless you're good at keeping a journal and you have time to re-read it.

As I look back at what happened in South Lake Tahoe over the last 365 days, a lot happened, but what may seem to be a top story to me may not seem as important to a reader.

I reviewed our analytics, the numbers that are kept to show how many people read South Tahoe Now stories at any given point, and drew from those numbers to come up with the "South Lake Tahoe's Top Stories of 2014."

Tips for being prepared during Lake Tahoe's winter storms

Liberty Utilities is reminding customers to always be prepared for winter storms and possible power outages that may result from them.

With the approaching winter storm, Liberty offers the following outage preparation tips:

Prepare for emergencies with South Lake Tahoe Reverse 911

The power outage that hit the whole south shore last week was the perfect example on why all residents should make sure their cell phones are their contact number for Reverse 911, a system in place that will alert you in the case of an emergency.

Before this week many residents had just their land lines posted on the Reverse 911 system and they didn't receive the warnings because of the lack of electricity in their homes.
