Add to that an election year and the advent of modern day zombies who’ve been quarantined a little too long and you have the ultimate scary flick that appears to have no ending. Are you wearing your mask? Yeah, I’d rather be scared by a movie and not real life if that’s okay?

Group started to match Lake Tahoe graduating seniors with gift-giving community members

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With high school seniors missing out on all of the traditional end-of-school activities such as prom and graduation, parents and community members around the globe have been coming up with unique ways to celebrate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In South Lake Tahoe, Baylee Inman decided to help out grads from all schools in Lake Tahoe, including homeschooled students and started a Facebook group Adopt-a-Senior Lake Tahoe to match the students with a gift-giving angel.

6th annual adult prom, Bubbles & Bowties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bubbles & Bowties, the adult prom that annually raises money for juvenile diabetes, will be held at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel on January 25, 2020.

Normally held in October, organizers of Bubbles & Bowties decided to move the popular event for two reasons: Problems with their original venue and a desire to not do a fundraiser near any others in town.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

This week at South Tahoe High School, the cold weather continued while students dressed up for “Versus Week,” seniors visited Lake Tahoe Community College day, and athletes brought home gold from the state championships.

On Campus
The spirit week theme was “Versus.” Students dressed up as nerds versus athletes, tourists vs. locals, rappers vs. country musicians, and more. A spirit rally is being held Friday to support the school’s canned food drive.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

Students at South Tahoe High School returned from a week-long Spring Break tanned and ready for the final two months before summer. This week was quiet as students prepared for the Black Light Dance, prom, AP testing, and the baseball team played at Reno Ace’s stadium.

On Campus
The Black Light Dance will be held on April 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the Student Union. Students dress up and paint themselves to match the theme. A surprise student DJ will be featured, so bring your glow sticks, Vikings.

Bubbles & Bowties, an adult prom that raises funds for Camp Buck and the Nevada Diabetes Foundation, had a record breaking fifth year thanks to support from the South Lake Tahoe community, Ms. Lisa Maloff and Ricky Reich.

Camp Buck gives kids with diabetes a unique and unforgetable experience

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Imagine you're ten years old and have just been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. No other students in your school have this disease, nor do any of your friends or family members. Insulin, glucose, pumps, blood testing, counting carbs are new words you now need to grasp and understand.

Facing life with this chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin is daunting, confusing, overwhelming.

Celebration of Life for Jean Gurney

The community of South Lake Tahoe lost a beloved member when Jean Gurney passed away on April 24, 2018. Like Lake Tahoe, Jean made people feel relaxed, elevated, and happy.

Jean was born on May 31, 1945 in Longview, Texas, to Viola and Frank Gurney. She spent her formative years in Massachusetts with her parents and sister Ann, and graduated from Minnechaug Regional High School in 1963.

Spotlight on You: Angela Zajic and Rah Hair Studio

A South Lake Tahoe hair salon is gaining attention from around the country because of their specialized wedding hair services, and its all because of Rah Hair Salon's owner Angelia Zajic and her team of eight stylists.

Zajic, a South Lake Tahoe native and a graduate of Whittell High School, opened Rah in 2009 after working at New Wave and in the Aveda Salon at MontBleu. It was her experience with Aveda that led Angela to creating a spa-like atmosphere at the studio which is located at 2572 Lake Tahoe Blvd #4.

Outdoor Earth Day festivities in South Lake Tahoe has meant a return of winter in past years, and 2016 will be no different. Good news for the festival is the Friday night snow will make room for a sunny and warmer Saturday before the next system moves in.

A series of storms are headed to the Sierra, the first set to arrive Thursday night/Friday morning.

It is also closing weekend at Heavenly Mountain Resort, and they should have a fresh layer of powder for the skiers headed to the slopes. Both Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe are both closed for the season.

South Lake Tahoe: What to do this weekend

The inaugural Winter Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event is open to the public and will feature stocking stuffers, gifts for Hanukkah and Christmas, and small prizes for attending. Food will be offered for sale by Seniors, Inc. The Senior Center is located at 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Bubbles and Bow Ties: Adult Prom to raise money for Diabetes

Did you think your days of dressing up for the prom were over? Wrong! The 3rd annual Adult Prom, Bubbles and Bow Ties, will be held at the Hard Rock Lake Tahoe on November 14 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Enjoy dancing, photo booths, contests for best hair and best outfit, Prom King and Queen raffle, and a silent auction, all to raise money for Camp Buck and the Nevada Diabetes Association.

Local personality Dreu Murin will host the evening events.

STHS Sober Grad Night tickets on sale; Volunteers needed

For over 20 years, students at South Tahoe High have been enjoying a safe and sober Grad Night. Committed parents and community members have been working hard to create a "never to forget" and "once in a lifetime: experience for all STHS graduates.

On the afternoon of June 5, the seniors will be walking down the school's football field during graduation ceremonies. That night, they'll be celebrating at Heavenly's California lodge with games, food, fun, a hypnotist, dancing and more until the early hours of the morning of the 6th.

South Lake Tahoe Teens Signing Pledges to Not Drink or Drive With Drinkers on Prom Night

The facts are startling, and, for lack of a better work, sobering. Studies show that 11% of all alcohol consumed in the U.S. is done so by youth aged 11 to 20, below the legal drinking age.

Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs according to the Center for Disease Control, and is responsible for more than 4,300 annual deaths among underage youth.

The 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that among high school students, during the past 30 days:

39% drank some amount of alcohol.
22% binge drank.

"Jamie Anderson, Make a High School Boy's Dream Come True"

You've seen the videos where a young man or woman asks a celebrity to go to the prom with them. Olympian Jamie Anderson from South Lake Tahoe has just received one of those requests.

The friends of Homestead High School student Nir Voloshin are trying to get his request out and hope that Jamie will see it, and respond.

Valentine's Day Prom to Raise Funds for Kids With Type One Diabetes

There is a South Lake Tahoe Prom this Friday, Valentine's Day, to help raise funds for the Type One Diabetes Camp held every year in the Sierra for kids with the disease ages 7 to 17.

Enjoy yourself with wine, dancing, shots, blackjack, roses, photo booths, contests and more! Dress in your old prom dress, a new one, have fun with a costume or theme. There will be contests and prizes all evening long.

Skin Cancer: The most common cancer and the most preventable

You've heard about the dangers of too much sun exposure and the need to use sunscreen. Still, you love the great outdoors and wouldn't miss a day of playing in the sun. Sunscreen? That is an afterthought. Or your prom or some other significant event is coming up so you opt for a tanning booth thinking….just this once. If any of these scenarios describes you, you may be setting yourself up for skin cancer.
