SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - World-class cycling fans across the globe will be watching the Amgen Tour of California May 12-18, covering a 777.6-mile course through 13 Host Cities, more than 68,000 feet of elevation gain and 25 King of the Mountain (KOM) climbs, the most in race history. Toyota created the Avalon about 25 years ago as a more luxurious and bigger Camry. Eventually, Toyota used the Avalon chassis for its Lexus ES350 series. Nothing wrong there. Now in its fifth generation, the all-new Avalon really is all new. While the nameplate is old, it is looking to attract younger drivers. The median age of Avalon drivers has grown from about 60 in 2005 to about 66 currently. For this new generation Avalon, perhaps the question should be asked: “Why are 66-year old’s having all the fun?”

South Lake Tahoe teen headed to intensive law and trial program at Stanford

A 17-year-old high school senior from South Lake Tahoe is headed to Stanford University Law School this summer for an intensive 10-day long session where she will step from the classroom to the courtroom.
Laney Terrell currently attends Visions in Education Charter School and is due to graduate this summer, a full year ahead of schedule. She is also taking classes at Lake Tahoe Community College.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been a while since the forecast had nothing but sunshine in it, but that is what is ahead for the Lake Tahoe Basin next week! Due to the warming temperatures, watch for increased flow in area streams and rivers due to the snowmelt.
For Monday and Tuesday, the northerly flow that started over the weekend will persist but gradually weaken as high-pressure noses into the region. The northerly flow will still be rather gusty Tuesday morning across area ridges but should diminish through the day.

New camping ordinance approved by South Lake Tahoe City Council

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the heels of a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ recent decision that stated cities cannot criminalize sleeping on public property where there is no alternative shelter space available, the City Council Tuesday updated South Lake Tahoe's camping code.
Prior to Tuesday, the City Code prohibited camping on all public property, except in areas specifically designated for camping, but that was not enforceable since there is no permanent shelter in South Lake Tahoe at this time, just seasonal.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man is currently at Barton Hospital after rolling his vehicle and threatening police with a knife on Sunday evening.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was dispatched to the area of Ski Run Boulevard and Pioneer Trail after witnesses called them about a possible drunk driver on April 14, 2019.
At 5:53 p.m. officers were headed to the area when they were called about the same vehicle driving through the mobile home park at the corner of Pioneer Trail and Blackwood Rd.
Cabin west of Lake Tahoe suffers total loss in fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A home at the intersection of Highway 50 and Sierra-at-Tahoe Road in the historic community of Phillips is a total loss after a fire ripped through it Friday night.
At 11:15 p.m. on April 12, Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) crews were called out to the scene along with several other agencies. Upon arrival, they found the home fully engulfed. Inside the home had been two women, one male, two dogs and two cats.
The male was transported to Barton Hospital with smoke inhalation and one cat was lost to the fire.

Sure, I like most of the vehicles I test, but there are some that stand out. Then from those stand out motor vehicles, we can find the best of the best. When you factor in price or bang for the buck, that best of the best gets very small, maybe two or three vehicles. The new Genesis G70 is one of them. The other vehicle is the Kia Stinger which is a slightly larger sibling of the G70. I will discuss the differences, but for this Road Beat it is the G70 that gets this ultimate spotlight and my tester was an AWD G70 Sport 3.3T.

April 17, 2019 - 2:00pm Pipe Keepers is a citizen science program to address the threat of stormwater pollution entering Lake Tahoe. Runoff from rainstorms and snowmelt is the largest source of pollution that degrades lake clarity.
The League to Save Lake Tahoe is holding a Pipekeeper Training on April 17 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Ski Run Marina in South Lake Tahoe.
League staff will train interested people to survey stormwater infrastructure including pipes and storm drains found throughout the city.
All ages welcome, no experience necessary. Snacks and refreshments provided.

Third generation Honda Pilot has been with us about three years, commencing with the model year 2016. It was an all-new design and ride with the only carryover being the 3.5L V-6 and even that was tricked out a bit with direct injection and 30 more ponies and nine more pounds of twist. Transmissions also got better with a standard six-speeder (one extra gear) and in the Touring and Elite trim lines, you’ll get a nine-speeder, which picks achieves about one mpg in the ratings.

Bart's Tahoe Apartments fail inspection, City Attorney to evaluate next steps

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Back in December 2018 the owners of Bart's Tahoe Apartments were issued a formal Notice and Order to repair and abate by the City of South Lake Tahoe. As a result of ongoing issues and a lack of willingness to fix the problems, they were 90 days to address a long list of safety issues and code violations.
Those 90 days were up on Friday, March 22, 2019, and City building inspectors and development services staff conducted an inspection and found the apartment building at 1224 Ski Run Boulevard continues to have unsafe living conditions.

While it still feels like winter, with a healthy snowpack and ski resorts reporting record monthly snowfall in February, another building season is fast approaching. One of the questions people ask the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency each year is why they have to pay mitigation fees for their development, like new homes and remodeling projects.

Douglas commissioners oppose Nevada gun background check law

Douglas County has made it clear to the State of Nevada they won't stand for any legislation that exceeds federal firearm transfer requirements. Their reaction came after Governor Steve Sisolak signed SB 143, a bill that would require background checks on gun sales, on February 15, 2019.
