Benefit concert in South Lake Tahoe to raise funds for Butte Fire victims

The local production crew, Mindful Massive, is putting on a concert in South Lake Tahoe Friday night to help the victims of the Butte Fire. It will be held at the American Legion from 9 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Tyler Mikkelsen of Mindful Massive said they wanted to do something to help those that lost everything in last month's devastating fire that consumed 70,868 acres, destroyed 475 homes and 343 outbuildings, damaged 45 structures and killed two people. A friend of theirs lived in Mountain Ranch and lost his home and belongings.

160 homes "evacuated" during South Lake Tahoe emergency drill

Though long awaited precipitation decided to fall in South Lake Tahoe Thursday, the Neighborhood Evacuation Drill still went ahead as planned.

"The drill went very well," said SLT Fire Chief Jeff Meston. "Overall a success with lessons learned.

He said there was great interagency cooperation with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Search and Rescue, El Dorado County STAR and South Lake Tahoe Action teams, Public Works department, and the Red Cross all joining the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department in the drill.

Body of missing San Francisco teacher found near Slate Mountain

Update 8/7/15: The body found off the OHV Trail west of Slate Mountain in the El Dorado National Forest was positively identified today as 45 year-old Edward Cavanaugh of San Francisco. The identification was done by a forensic odontologist, who compared Cavanaugh’s dental records to the upper and lower jaw bones found near his motorcycle. The cause of death is still under investigation.

Tahoe's Search and Rescue team responds to 150-200 calls a year

You're hiking along the trails of Lake Tahoe, fall and break your ankle. How do you get to the hospital? You're exploring the valleys and canyons of the Sierra, it gets dark and you don't know where you are. How do you get to safety? You've fallen on the slippery rocks of a waterfall and can't get out. Who do you call?

El Dorado Search and Rescue (SAR) is the answer to all of these questions and dozens more. Annually, the volunteers and deputies that make up SAR handle between 150 and 200 calls in the county portion of the Tahoe basin (AKA the east slope).

Search on for Bay Area man missing in county for over a week

Friends, family and over 50 Search and Rescue volunteers from five counties are searching for 46-year-old Edward Cavanaugh who was last seen on July 17.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office says the Bay Area man was last seen in the Rock Creek area where he was riding his blue Yamaha YZ 250. Cavanaugh parted ways with another rider he had been riding with and said he was going to utilize the trail system to return to a residence he owns in the area. This trail system is in the Georgetown Divide area between the towns of Mosquito and Garden Valley.

Area Search and Rescue volunteers help in Shasta County

Almost 40 Search and Rescue volunteers from El Dorado County Office of Emergency Services (OES) went to Shasta County over the weekend to help search vast terrain for an abducted 6-month-old baby.

The team of 20 volunteers were in Redding, CA, just hours after their services were requested on Friday, July 10 and spent the weekend searching through chest high starthistle and stickers, with no sign of the missing baby. Another group of 18 El Dorado County Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers headed up on Sunday.

Disaster Declaration for parts of Douglas County

Approximately 141 homes have water and structural damage after Wednesday's flooding in the Stephanie and Johnson Lane areas of Douglas County. It is unknown how many homes may have landscape damage.

No injuries have been reported.

Douglas County Emergency Management is currently working on managing the storms that are currently passing through Douglas County. Areas of concern are the flood prone areas of the Fish Springs, Johnson Lane, Foothill Road and Topaz Ranch Estates.

Current road closures at this time in Douglas County are East Valley Road near Eldon Way in the Johnson Lane area. Precautions should be taken when driving along roads that have steep embankments alongside such as SR207 Kingsbury Grade for falling rocks and debris.

Multiple Fires sparked In Carson Valley; 7,000 without power

This just in from the Douglas County Sheriff's Department: On June 27, 2015, at approximately 6:17 p.m., the East Fork Fire District in Douglas County responded to a report of several wildland fires along the east side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

There have been reports of six fires along the west side of the Carson Valley.

East Fork Fire, along with the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) have responded to the multiple fires and are working to access each of the fires.

South Lake Tahoe's July 4th Parade canceled

Just as the annual parade through South Lake Tahoe on the 4th of July was gaining momentum, it has been canceled for 2015.

A disappointed JoAnn Conner, owner of the parade organizer Golden Bear Events, released the message on Facebook and via email on Thursday, June 17.

"I am sorry to have to report that the popular 4th of July Parade is cancelled this year," Conner said. "There were a couple of huge last minute hurdles that just came up. No time to overcome them."

Hikers injured at Horsetail Falls and Cascade Falls

Two different backcountry hikers needed to be rescued by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team on Monday, June 8.

The first incident was at 12:43 p.m. when an adult male hiker fell at Cascade Falls, resulting in traumatic injuries. With the assistance of ground personnel from Lake Valley Fire Department, USFS and Cal Fire, rescuers were able to provide care and get the hiker hoisted out on a California Highway Patrol helicopter. The CHP helicopter transferred the hiker to a CALSTAR medical air ambulance, and then transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary has been a part of the South Shore community since 1962, and, as are the other 1.2 million Rotarians in the world, are bound by a commong purpose, Service Above Self. Celebrity Golf Tournament gives over $115,000 to local causes and charities

South Lake Tahoe non-profits were awarded $48,000 during the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority board meeting today. The 22 groups were each given between $1,000 and $3,000. LTCC’s Avalanche Workshop a One-Of-A-Kind Tahoe Event

Backcountry explorers, wilderness leaders, ski resort employees and search and rescue personnel: prepare for the winter season by attending the California Avalanche Workshop at Lake Tahoe Community College on Saturday, October 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Board/Aspen Room. This is a rare opportunity to hear forecasters from all of the California avalanche centers speak and answer questions. In addition, ski guides, pro skiers, snow scientists, and avalanche survivors will present their findings.

More than 28 countries will be represented in South Lake Tahoe as the region becomes host for the International Commission for Alpine Rescue's annual conference.

For the first time in its 66 year history, the International Commission for Alpine Rescue (IKAR) will be coming to the USA for its annual Congress. Hosted by the US Mountain Rescue Association, the event will be held at Harvey’s Resort and Casino, Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

Douglas County Search and Rescue (SAR) is helping the host put on the conference which includes local hiking and tourist activities.

Search Continues near Ice House Reservoir For Missing Man

UPDATE June 13, 2014 10:46 a.m. - The search for Vernon “Cody” Matthews over the last few days has not revealed any new information indicating his whereabouts. Sheriff D’Agostini is still dedicated to determining Cody’s location and search operations are continuing. Search and Rescue personnel from El Dorado, Solano, Placer and Contra Costa Counties are on scene along with personnel from the Bay Area Mountain Rescue team and the California Rescue Dog Association. A helicopter from the California Highway Patrol will also be assisting in todays search.

10:45 p.m. update - Romeo has been located and returned home safe. No other details have been provided.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Search and Rescue are searching for 11 year old Romeo Obrien who was last seen at 2 p.m. in the Gardnerville Ranchos near Patricia Court.

Romeo is 5'3" tall, has brown hair and brown eyes with a scar under his left eye. He was last seen wearing a blue DARE shirt and blue shorts.

Romeo’s last known direction is unknown. Romeo has been entered into NCIC as a missing person.

A hiker in the area of Cascade Lake reported seeing a floating body on the lake Wednesday afternoon. The Lake Tahoe local woman was hiking on the north east side of Cascade Lake near the shoreline when she thought she saw a body float up towards the surface and then sink down and out of view.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue volunteers and CALSTAR responded to the vicinity of the sighting but did not find any evidence of a floating body.

South Lake Tahoe Woman Missing; Police Ask For Public's Help

4-5-14 12:40 p.m. update - Camilyn Kay Price-Miller has been found alive and well in another location. She was unaware of the search for her so, once she found out about the situation she walked into a local police station.

Two Hiking Groups Get Lost In South Lake Tahoe Area Friday; Both Found Safe

El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue teams were called out twice on Friday evening, once to the Cascade Falls area and the other to Vikingsholm.

The first call came in just before 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Two women from Illinois were hiking near Cascade Falls and became lost. They called 911. While waiting to be located, the women came across other hikers who assisted them in returning to the camp ground where they were met by Search and Rescue at approximately 6 p.m. No injuries were reported.

South Lake Tahoe's 2nd Annual Holiday Parade on Saturday

The 2nd Annual South Lake Tahoe Holiday Parade will be held on Saturday, December 14. Spectators will line the parade route from the top of Ski Run Blvd to TJMaxx at the Y. When the parade starts the forecast is sunny and 40 degrees.
