Placer County SAR volunteer shot while looking for missing hiker

A Placer County Search and Rescue volunteer was shot in the hip on Tuesday evening while out with a team searching for a 75-year-old missing hiker.

Steven Wolf was part of a three-person team searching between Brown and Fish Creek for the hiker who was last seen near the town of Washington on the South Yuba River. The other two members of Wolf's team found cover and radioed for help.

Search continues for woman missing from Alpine County campground

On July 28, 71-year-old Rosalynn Saxsenmeier wandered away from her camping spot in the Silver Valley Campground at Lake Alpine at 2:00 p.m. and hasn't been seen since.

Many agencies are assisting in the search and combing a 100-mile area for the El Granada (Half Moon Bay area), Calif., woman. A "Silver Alert" has been issued via the California Highway Patrol as well. Search and rescue teams from El Dorado, Tuolumne, Marin, Contra Costa, Placer and Calaveras counties have been joined by K-9 crews, CA Office of Emergency Services and the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit.

Dog rescued on Mt. Tallac, carried to safety by Search and Rescue

Normally its the Saint Bernard who does the rescuing, but on Sunday, the tables were turned. The El Dorado County Search and Rescue team hiked in two miles on the Mt. Tallac trail Sunday evening to rescue a hiker who was stranded with her 110-pound dog Mia.

The eight-year-old dog was suffering from fatigue and hurt paws and her owner couldn't make it down the trail with the injured dog. Other hikers in the area called in the emergency to dispatch, saying the four-legged and two-legged hikers needed assistance.

Body found in burned car in Washoe County, Sheriff's Office seeks public's help

Three people have been identified as "persons of interest" by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office in connection to an investigation of human remains found in a burnt vehicle off State Route 447 on Thursday night.

The men have been identified as Shannon Miller, Shawn Miller and Corey Massengale, all from the Silver Spring area of Lyon County.

Woman drowns while rafting on American River near Kyburz

A San Francisco woman died on the South Fork of the American River near Kyburz while rafting on Saturday, July 9.

Elaine Yi Mau, 32, was camping at the China Flat Campground with friends when they took rafts into the nearby river. At 4:09 p.m., the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office was told of a rafting accident involving Mau. She had been on a raft with someone who fell off, and when he surfaced, Mau was gone.

Letter to the Editor: City’s 4th of July Parade a huge success

The City of South Lake Tahoe hosted its first annual 4th of July parade on Monday, July 4, 2016. There were a total of 78 vehicles and approximately 200 people on foot either walking, biking, or dancing. American Legion Post 795 served as the parade marshals.

The City of South Lake Tahoe would like to say "Thank You" to all the parade participants, businesses and volunteers for making the 4th of July parade a fantastic community event!

Cameron Park teen still missing after hiking near Cosumnes River

The 15-year-old from Cameron Park who went missing while with family members on May 29 has yet to be found, even though El Dorado County search and rescue teams have not given up looking for him.

Joshua Joo, a atudent at Ponderosa High School, became separated from his group in the Bucks Bar area near the North Fork of the Cosumnes River, in what is known as the Cosumnes River Gorge.

Joo is and activer member of the school's Alpine Ski Team and Future Farmers of America (FFA).

Since the day Joshua went missing, there has been an extensive and ongoing search effort to locate him.

A Cameron Park teenager is still missing in the Bucks Bar area, near the North Fork of the Cosumnes River. On Saturday, May 29 at 12:08 p.m., the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office received a call of the missing 15-year-old who was hiking in the area with family and became separated from the group and was last seen near the river.

Anne “Annie” Elisabeth Thomas passed away peacefully on Friday, April 29 after a hard fought battle with cancer. Annie was born in Batavia, New York on December 16th, 1955, to Anne Elisabeth McGee (Zehrung) and Herman Fisher.

Woman rescued from cliffs above Emerald Bay

An Incline Village woman was rescued from the cliffs above Vikingsholm in Emerald Bay on Thursday after she slipped while climbing down the mountain.

Jane Rylander had been climbing in the steep cliff bands from Vikingsholm parking lot down towards the main castle. She slipped and slid down the embankment becoming stuck on the cliff band. She was not injured but could not climb up or down and was in the need of rescue.

Missing ski instructor Carson May found in five feet of snow

Two search and rescue teams training in the snow at the Sugar Bowl Resort on Monday found the body of missing ski instructor Carson May.

The El Dorado County Search and Rescue dog teams, along with the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue team, located May under five feet of snow in an avalanche prone out-of-bounds area at the resort.

Carson May, 23, was a ski instructor at the resort and went missing Jan. 15, 2016. He was not found despite an intensive, four-day search by dozens of volunteers and law enforcement officers.

Body of missing Lake Tahoe woman found at Emerald Bay

A Search and Rescue team from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office found the body of Carolyn Batchelor, the Zephyr Cove woman who was reported missing on February 17.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office had been searching for the 69-year-old woman when her car was found parked at Inspiration Point overlooking Emerald Bay on February 19. At that time, the car was covered in a foot of snow from recent snowfall.

Missing woman's car found near Emerald Bay

The car belonging to Carolyn Batchelor, the Zephyr Cove woman missing since February 15, has been found near Emerald Bay, but there is still no sign of the 69-year-old woman.

The California Highway Patrol located the vehicle in the area of Inspiration Point, overlooking the bay near South Lake Tahoe. El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and Search and Rescue team, along with Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue are searching the area where Batchelor's car was found.

Fear of freezing to death prompts two criminals to call 911

Two men trying to evade arrest on January 22, ended up calling 911 and telling officers they were freezing to death and in fear of dying.

Tristen Crossland and Derek Dion were the lone occupants of a car that was pulled over by a California Fish and Wildlife officer on the morning of Friday, January 22, near Highway 50 and Wrights Lake Road when they decided to flee on foot.

Search suspended for missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor

If Carson May, the missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor, is not found by the end of the day Tuesday, the Placer County Sheriff's Office will suspend the search.

The 23-year-old went missing on January 15 during white-out conditions at the resort.

Search and Rescue teams from several agencies and states have conducted intensive searches with avalanche dogs, helicopters and on the ground.

Conditions during the five days of searching have been treacherous due to frequent heavy snow and the associated risks that high avalanche danger poses to the many search and rescue volunteers.

Still no sign of missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor; Not seen since Thursday

There is still no sign of 23-year-old Carson May, the Sugar Bowl ski instructor who went missing after taking an after-work run Thursday afternoon, despite efforts by 60 searchers at the resort on Sunday.

Searchers were back on this hill at 8:00 a.m. today.

The search for a missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor has been called off for the evening by the Placer County Sheriff's Office.

More than 50 people spent the day searching for 23-year-old Carson May who hasn't been seen since Thursday when he went skiing after work.

Searchers, with the help of search and rescue dogs, have been focusing their search on the back side of the mountain where the sheriff's office has been able to get pings from May's cell phone.

Missing Lake Tahoe skier rescued in same area as previous day SAR training

Douglas County Search and Resuce (DCSAR) spent Saturday doing technical training on the eastern slopes of the Carson Range. Heavenly Mountain Resort allowed the members to ride the Gondola and Tamarack chair before the resort opened to the public so that the training could focus on safely traveling down to the valley, as would be required on a real rescue.

They didn't have to wait long to use their finely tuned skills since they were called out to the resort on Sunday after a skier became lost in the same general area. DCSAR was able to safely locate and rescue the unidentified person.

The celebratory crowd at Stateline was once again a small crowd, estimated by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to be between 5,000-10,000. The road through the casino corridor didn't have to close until 11:58 p.m.

Woman found on roof at Edgewood Tahoe

4:30 p.m. update 12/31/15:

The woman who was a focus of a search in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday was found by Douglas County Sheriff's Search and Rescue.

At 3:30 p.m., April Torres was located on the roof top of Edgewood Tahoe Golf Resort. She has been transported to Barton Hospital. Her medical condition is unknown.

MontBleu surveillance employees spent the day searching through their films and the last time she was seen on film was when she left the casino on foot and went to the corner of the Loop Road and Highway 50.

The investigation continues.

Search and Rescue teams kept busy with stranded motorists and snowmobilers

Heavy snow stranded two snowmobilers and a vehicle in the Sierra Nevada during recent storms, bringing out search and rescue volunteers from both El Dorado and Alpine Counties in the last ten days.

Search and Rescue locates out of bounds snowboarder near Cold Creek

Search and Rescue volunteers from El Dorado County recently responded to a report of an out-of-bounds snowboarder from Heavenly who ended up near the Montgomery Estates neighborhood. Twelve volunteers on skis, snowmobiles and snowshoes made their way about four miles into the wilderness before locating 41 year-old Pavel Kletsov.

On Friday, December 11, Kletsov left the boundaries of Heavenly Valley Ski Resort and ended up in the Cold Creek Drainage, just above Montgomery Estates. Due to the fresh new snow and terrain he got stuck and could not get out on his own.

Douglas County Search and Rescue locates missing skier

Update: A South Lake Tahoe man, 28 year old Nicholas Bridges, ducked under the out of bound ropes and skied out of bounds at Heavenly Ski Resort on December 19.

At 4:33 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff's Office received a call that Bridges' friend couldn't find him after trying to find for over two hours.

Members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team began a coordinated search of the potential area. At approximately 8:10 p.m., Bridges was able to call dispatch and alert them as to his wearabouts.

Bridges was issued a citation for skiing out of bounds.

Missing Sierra Nevada College student safe and back at school

Dianne Thacher is no longer missing and returned to her dorm room at Sierra Nevada College Tuesday afternoon. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that she is safe, not injured and that there was no foul play associated with her disappearance.

Missing elderly Bay Area man found in Incline Village

Washoe County Sheriff Chuck Allen is praising the efforts of Incline Village Deputies and Search and Rescue volunteers who discovered the location of a missing and endangered elderly California man Monday in Incline Village.

“If you were to talk to the men and women responsible for this rescue effort, they will tell you that it is all simply part of their job or why they do what they do,” Sheriff Allen said. “As Sheriff, I will tell you that we should all be proud of their actions this week for I believe they saved a life that day.”
