USFS closes more campgrounds in California due to COVID-19

National Forest developed campgrounds in the Lake Tahoe Basin have already closed for the winter season and dispersed camping in Desolation Wilderness and Meiss Country are not affected by the following closure.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - National Forest trails, trailheads, beaches and other day-use areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin will re-open for day-use only beginning Saturday, Sep. 19, 2020. Camping and overnight stays will not be permitted, and campgrounds will remain closed. Resorts will reopen for day-use only. Emergency Fire Restrictions will remain in effect through Nov. 30. I’ve attached the Forest Orders for your awareness.
The prohibition of the use of any ignition source on all National Forest System lands (campfires, gas stoves, etc.) throughout California remains in place.

Due to unprecedented and historic fire conditions throughout the state, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region announced they are extending the temporary closure orders for 18 National Forests in California. This decision will be re-evaluated as conditions change.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All campgrounds and day use areas on U.S. Forest Service land in California and the Lake Tahoe Basin must close at 5:00 p.m. Monday, September 7 due to the unprecedented and dangerous fire conditions and extreme heat, significant wind events, dry conditions, and firefighting resources that are stretched to the limit.
The USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region has announced the following temporary closures and fire restrictions to provide for public safety and reduce the potential for human caused fire starts:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Most major work by Caltrans on Sierra highways is on winter suspension, but some temporary work can be completed, weather permitting. Here is the week's schedule for Caltrans:

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work is winter suspension on a $5.2 million project to upgrade metal beam guardrail and construct concrete barriers at 89 locations from the Red Hawk Undercrossing to 1.9 miles west of the junction with State Route 89 in Meyers. Completion is expected in late spring 2020.

Art has a way of making the creator immortal. Such is the case with Ed Laine.
The longtime South Lake Tahoe resident died Nov. 8, 2018, at home. He was 87.
Beyond a large family and rich trove of friends, Ed leaves behind a legacy as an artist. He was a quiet man who for years let his voice be heard through his work.
Born in Palo Alto on Oct. 17, 1931, to Selma Alquist and John Laine, Ed grew up in the Bay Area, having graduated from Sequoia Union High School in 1950. He attended San Jose State College, Cal Arts and the University of Oregon. In Oregon he majored in art.

The National Park Service (NPS) is considering raising fees at their most popular locations during the peak season to pay for overdue and badly needed improvements to the aging infrastructure of national parks. This includes roads, bridges, campgrounds, waterlines, bathrooms, and other visitor services.

South Lake Tahoe sisters found safe in Oregon

Update 9:30 a.m. - Melissa Lea, 18, and her 7-year-old sister Kalila have been found safe in Oregon.
A grocery store clerk near the eclipse festival recognized them from the missing persons' report.
No other information is available at this time.

Two sisters who traveled from South Lake Tahoe to attend the Symbiosis eclipse festival in Oregon have not been heard from since Sunday, according to the Crook County Sheriff's Office.

$562 million need to cut down California's dead trees, Senator Feinstein seeks funding

There are an estimated 66 million dead trees in California, and 5.5 million of them need to be cut down immediately to prevent catastrophic fires according to the U.S. Forest Service and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

There are 59 national parks in the United States and they are all celebrating the 100th birthday of the National Park Service. On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed an act of Congress, the National Park Service Organic Act, which created the agency that now watches over 84.4 million acres of land, 4.5 million acres of oceans, reservoirs and lakes, 85,000 miles of rivers and streams, and 43,000 miles of shoreline.

Known as "John of the Mountains", Muir was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada of California, have been read by millions. Muir’s activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas.

Tahoe Tot Spot changes owners, celebrates with St. Patrick's Day party

A South Lake Tahoe couple has taken over the ownership at Tahoe Tot Spot, a place where the younger set can enjoy activities, interactions with other kids, crafts and more.
Julie Pardysz was relocating to Colorado and had the business up for sale. The Tot Spot was on the verge of having to close as no buyers were coming forward. At the last minute, Jen and Chris Bloch made an offer to keep the doors open.
Soroptimists honor South Tahoe Middle School students

Twelve students from South Tahoe Middle School were honored for their essays during the annual Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra Writing Festival.
The students had a topic based on their grade level: seventh graders wrote about "Privacy vs. National Security," while the eighth graders were challenged with writing about who the 2016 female Presidential candidate should be, and why.

New bear cub at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care for the winter

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care welcomed a new house guest for the winter, one-year-old China.
China is a 40 pound male bear cub who just arrived from China Peak, near Huntington Lake, outside of Fresno. LTWC names the cubs that come to their center after the region they come from.
The first year cub's mother had to be euthanized after receiving irreparable damage after being hit by a car. China will be living at LTWC for the remainder of the winter with two other cubs that came from Sequoia.

Smoke from Rough Fire continues to head into Tahoe Basin

Winds the are continuing to move smoke from the 85,894 acre Rough Fire burning outside of Fresno, CA into the Lake Tahoe Basin this weekend.
There are 1,967 personnel currently assigned to the fire and containment has now been increased to 31%. It is burning in the mountains between Fresno and Independence, CA.

The Rough Fire burning in the mountains east of Fresno, CA has consumed over 77,000 acres as of Wednesday morning, making it the largest active fire in the state of California.
Smoke from this large fire has made it way up to Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley, creating hazy skies along with a faint smell of smoke.
5,000 lightning strikes in Sierra and Reno area; Scattered thunderstorms in forecast

There were over 5,000 lightning strikes in the Sierra and Western Nevada on Saturday, many of those causing small fires. Those areas are being monitored. Mendocino County has seven lightning caused fires currently burning and Humboldt county has over 70 fires also caused by lightning.
Update: Over 3,500 acres burned in Yosemite fire

7/29/14 11:30 p.m. update: The El Portal Fire burning near Yosemite is now 34% contained. Firefighters gained good ground on all sides of the fire except for the northern portion which has caused concern for fire officials. Steep, rugged terrain continues to challenge the efforts of firefighters but progress is being made. The weather forecast calls for continued high temperatures reaching as high as 100 degrees near El Portal.
At this point in time 3,545 acres have burned. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Some Good News Comes Out of Rim Fire Area

The risky measures taken by firefighters to save a stand of giant trees standing in the way of the third-largest blaze in California history worked. Firefighters set back fires to save Yosemite’s Rockefeller, Merced and Tuolumne groves of giant sequoias and giant pines. The tallest sugar pine, 264 ft, lived according to the Sugar Pine Foundation.
In other Rim Fire News, the fire is still burning north of Yosemite. it is now 92% contained and has burned 257,135 acres (402 square miles) to date.
