Letter: Nick Exline for STPUD Board

Dear South Lake Tahoe Community,

I first met Nick Exline at an event where we had the opportunity to meet Democratic congressional candidate Dr. Bob Derlet. Nick asked about carbon markets and the related benefits to our Sierra Nevada economy. As a watershed scientist, I was impressed by Nick’s informed and thoughtful question. I enjoyed meeting a South Lake Tahoe resident who possessed a strong background in environmental science, as well as a thoughtful man who had ideas about how we could turn our largest obstacles in this region into economic successes for our residents.

Drought outlook grim for Lake Tahoe and California

The graphics and news released this week for the seasonal drought outlook for the Sierra Nevada and the rest of the west look rather grim for those wanting a big winter and extra water to replenish lakes, reservoirs and rivers.

According to the Climate Prediction Center (CPC), the drought ends for some parts of Northern California, but mild temperatures and below average precipitation will cause the drought to continue.

Pilot identified in plane crash near Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body of a man found Tursday near the site of a plane crash southwest of Lake Tahoe as Tyrell Kremer of Wilton, Calif.

NDOW releases Lake Tahoe bear back into the wild near Mt. Rose

Nevada wildlife biologists released a three-plus year old male black bear back into the forest near the top of Mt. Rose Summit on Monday morning after capturing him Sunday in Incline Village at Lake Tahoe.

Nevada Department of Wildlife trapped the young bear while attempting to trap another bear that had caused damage to a building, according to wildlife biologist Carl Lackey. The bear that was captured and then later released Monday wasn't the bear Lackey was looking for.

Lackey says that NDOW had handled the released bear once before in the mountains east of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Smoke in Lake Tahoe Basin from Whittell Forest prescribed burn

Smoke filled the Lake Tahoe Basin on Wednesday, but it isn't from a wildland fire. There is a prescribed burn by the Nevada Division of Forestry in the Whittell Forest between Lake Tahoe and Washoe Lake.

The 250-acre prescribed burn remains under control and is not posing any threat. The forest is owned by the University of Nevada, Reno

Whittell Forest is located on the east slope of the Sierra Nevada in Little Valley, about three miles west of Washoe Lake and 2.5 miles east of Lake Tahoe and 20 miles south of Reno. The burn operation is expected to continue for four or five days.

Prescribed burning to resume in Eldorado National Forest

If you see smoke around Amador, Georgetown and Placerville it will most likely be from 12,671 acres of National Forest land being burned this fall by the U.S. Forest Service.

USFS will begin its fall prescribed burn program in the Eldorado National Forest as soon as weather conditions are favorable. Fire managers plan to burn approximately, 12,671 acres of National Forest land this fall, winter and spring using a combination of understory and pile burning techniques.

Dusting of snow at higher elevations

During a temporary halt to summer, snow fell on the upper elevations of the Sierra Nevada overnight. At Kirkwood, their Cornice Chair camera picked up the first sight of snow in months.

The base of Kirkwood is at 7800 ft, and the summit sits at 9800 ft and a dusting of snow could be seen Tuesday morning around the resort.

But, the wet and cold front is out of the Lake Tahoe Basin quickly and summer sets back in. The first day of Fall is September 22.

Here is the forecase from the National Weather Service:

Nightime freezing temperatures around Lake Tahoe Monday - Wednesday

Low temperatures Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings could easily dip below freezing around the Lake Tahoe basin and in the Sierra Nevada. Bundle up for Sunday night's fireworks show on the South Shore as temps are forecast to be 48-52 degrees when the show starts at 8:30 p.m.

Keep in mind that temperatures at ground level where plants are located tend to be a few degrees colder than the forecast low air temperature – you may want to cover sensitive garden vegetation.

From the National Weather Service in Reno:

Senator Diane Feinstein holds "Lake Tahoe Stakeholders" luncheon

Protecting Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada is the job of many stakeholders. Its not just a local job, not just a California job, not just a Nevada job, not just a national job, and as witnessed through President Obama's visit to the Lake Tahoe Summit Wednesday, it can only be successful through partnerships of all of those entities along with agencies, local and private investment.

On Tuesday, August 29, the day before the Summit, California Senator Diane Feinstein hosted a lunch for local officials, agencies and federal counterparts, described as the "Lake Tahoe Stakeholders Luncheon".

Opinion: Another historic turning point for Tahoe this Summit

Lake Tahoe was at a crossroads in 1997. The lake’s famous water clarity, once measuring 100 feet, was declining year after year because of stormwater pollution from roads and developed areas and erosion from streams damaged by logging and cattle grazing.

Event Date:
August 11, 2016 - 5:30pm

The passenger transportation system has seen little innovation since the advent of the Interstate Highway System. That is now changing. The ubiquity of smart phones is enabling the commercialization of a range of new mobility services, led by Uber and Lyft; rapid advances in battery and fuel cell technology are enabling electrification of vehicles; and rapid advances in digital technologies are enabling automation of vehicles. The challenge for policymakers is to direct these revolutions toward the public interest—including in the Tahoe Basin.

New chemical discovered at UC Davis may be new tool for depression therapy

Event Date:
June 30, 2016 - 5:30pm

A chemical discovered in a UC Davis lab may be a new, innovative tool to control depression. Studies involve an enzyme (soluble epoxide hydrolase or sEH) which is found in many species from bugs to humans. Research in animal models of depression suggests that sEH plays a key role in modulating inflammation, which is involved in depression. Years of research and discovery around this enzyme led from investigating insect biology to translating the basic science into a potential therapy for man.

USFS: 66 million dead trees in Sierra; 26 million since October

The number of dead trees in the Sierra Nevada are now at historic levels and have fueled the risk of catastrohpic wildfires according to the U.S. Forest Service.

They announced Wednesday that they have identified an additional 26 million dead trees in California since October 2015, bringing the total to at least 66 million dead trees in the state. The most recent additions are located in six counties across 760,000 acres in the Southern Nevada region.

Recovery from snowpack drought to take at least four years

Even though the winter of 2016 brought a strong El Nino, it wasn't enough to recover from the previous years' dismal snowpacks.

In a report released by a team of researchers led by UCLA, the snow water equivalent (SWE) seen in 2015, when added to the previous three years of drought, was the worst seen in 1,200 years.

Since the SWE in the Sierra snowpack directly affects the state, the scientists also said that, even if the Sierra has average snowpacks, it will take
California until at least 2019 to recover.

Think First - Keep Tahoe Fire Safe

June is wildfire awareness month at Lake Tahoe. And nine years later, the 2007 Angora Fire remains a vivid remember that wildfire is one of the greatest threats facing our environment, our homes, and our businesses. We must prepare accordingly.

Our region continues to take important steps to manage that wildfire threat, improve the health of our forests, and create fire adapted communities that are prepared for the next wildfire at Tahoe. But there is more work to do.

El Dorado County to address dead trees

Drought conditions and resulting bark beetle infestations have caused pervasive tree mortality across the Central and Southern Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is estimated that there are over 29 million dead trees and this number continues to grow on a daily basis. El Dorado County is not immune to this epidemic as there are thousands of dead and dying trees threatening public safety and infrastructure.
