The annual joint board meeting with the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) to discuss common goal strategies was held Tuesday, will innovative programs and successes highlighted.

Author Gage McKinney will share with us the incredibly interesting tale of the hard-rock miners from Cornwall who came to America early in the 1800s to tap the continent’s rich mineral wealth. They were crucial to the California Gold Rush and settled in the mining camps of the Sierra Nevada. Along with their mining skills, they brought their folk music and especially their Christmas carols. Gage will describe the origins of this music, which was composed, performed and enjoyed by mining families, and is preserved today by their descendants.

In advance of Earth Day, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center will have a presentation on April 10 around the fact that 500 million straws used, and discarded, daily in the United States.

That is enough straws to wrap around the Earth's circumference 2.5 times a day.

The Douglas County Public Library will be hosting local Lake Tahoe author Jennifer Quashnick at both branches of the library. Jennifer will be at the Lake Tahoe Branch in Zephyr Cove on Wednesday, April 18 at 6:00 p.m. to introduce her Mountaingirl Mysteries series. She will then bring the discussion to the Minden Branch on Wednesday, May 30 at 5:30 p.m.

Prescribed fire operations will continue around several areas around Lake Tahoe this week, weather permitting. he Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations in Sugar Pine Point and Burton Creek state parks on the West Shore, Carnelian Bay and Kings Beach on the North Shore, Logan Shoals on the East Shore and on Kingsbury Grade and off Ski Run Boulevard on the South Shore. Smoke may be present.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is looking for hard-working, dedicated volunteers that are interested in helping to preserve one of our nation’s most beautiful wilderness areas, Desolation Wilderness. Interested and committed individuals are invited to attend an informational open house on Thursday, March 15, 2018, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and/or Saturday, March 17 from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Forest Supervisor’s office, 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, California 96150.

The entire Sierra Nevada are under a high avalanche warning in the back country at all elevations, but now there is a warning in the Crystal Bay area of Lake Tahoe in neighborhoods.

Per the Washoe County Emergency Management avalanche expert, due to weather conditions and forecasted incoming weather conditions, a Stage 1 Avalanche Warning has been issued for the residents of Crystal Bay/Third Creek subdivisions.

The blizzard warnings in the Lake Tahoe basin have prompted school officials to close schools, or in the case of Douglas County, put them on late start.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District is on a Snow Day. All Schools Will be CLOSED today due to the Blizzard Warning issued by the National Weather Service.

Learn how to grow vegetables in your Lake Tahoe garden this summer through a series of free workshops presented by the UCCE Master Gardeners. The classes are offered at both ends of the lake on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during May. This year's classes are potatoes, onions, raspberries, lettuce & kale, and tomatoes.

Each week will be a new theme. The workshops are all family friendly and attendees get to go home with plants for your home garden!

Classes will run from May 14 - June 14th, 2018 in the evenings.

Volunteers are desperately needed for two upcoming student science events: The 2018 Science Expo March 12-16 in Incline Village and SLT Science Expo April 3-6 in South Lake Tahoe.

All science activities will be ready to go and minimal training is required, This year's activities focus on Life Science, Health and Nutrition, and include activities focused on the topics of organisms and ecosystems, inheritance and adaptation, and health and nutrition.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. – The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes local, state and federal agencies, are planning to continue prescribed fire operations this week in some locations around Lake Tahoe, weather and conditions permitting.

In the map above, the following areas are planned:

A) Cave Rock Area - Tahoe Douglas Fire District will be burning 5 acres
B) Kingsbury/ Edgewood Creek - Tahoe Douglas Fire District will be burning 70 acres
C) Lyons Ranch, West of Golden Bear Subdivision - California Tahoe Conservancy will be burning 10 acres

Visible smoke at several areas around Lake Tahoe Wednesday are from scheduled prescribed burns.

On the South Shore, smoke can be seen for miles from Oneidas Street where the U.S. Forest Service is burning 100 acres, a project they began on January 17. They do not burn all 100 acres at the same and do small amounts each day, then put the fires out before moving to the next area.

Besides Oneidas, other burn areas drawing a lot of smoke are 70 acres being burned near Thunderbird Lodge near Incline Village and 70 acres near Brockway.

What is dark matter? This elusive "stuff" makes up a quarter of the universe. Join Dr. Marusa Bradac at the U.C. Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) on Thursday, February 8 to hear about research on the composition of the Universe, properties of dark matter, and the latest discoveries about the Universe's past. Dr. Marusa Bradac, originally from Slovenia, is a physics professor at UC Davis.

Winter will finally make an appearance to Lake Tahoe, the Sierra Nevada and Northern Nevada by the end of the week and even into next week as well. A much welcomed Sierra snow will be on tap, as a colder, stronger storm is set to move into the region according to the National Weather Service in Reno. This will bring the first significant snowfall to the Sierra that we`ve seen in a while.

The latest weather models continue to show a weak to moderate Atmospheric River (AR) moving into the Sierra, combining with much colder temperatures behind the cold front.

At of 7:02 a.m. Friday there have been 11 small earthquakes in the Reno area centered near Galena High School, starting with a 1.6 at 10:45 p.m. Thursday. It was 1.3 miles ENE of Galena.

Snow fell at upper elevations Friday night, bringing 3-10" of much needed powder to Lake Tahoe ski resorts. Both Northstar and Heavenly reported 6", Sierra-at-Tahoe had 3", Squaw Alpine 4", Kirkwood 7" and Mt. Rose 10".

This is just a precursor to the next storm which is forecast to bring heavy snow the the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe Basin. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued, and, according to the National Weather Service in Reno, accumulations of 1-2 feet above 7,000 feet is expected with over two feet at the crest. The rerouting of a 1.3 mile section of the joint Tahoe Rim Trail and Pacific Crest Trail near Echo Summit has been proposed in order to move hikers away from the noisy highway and instead traverse the far side of a ridge that offers more pristine views and less traffic noise.

This will be a partnership between the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA), the Pacific Crest Trail Association (PCTA), the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and the Eldorado National Forest.

Lake Tahoe-based Weidinger Public Relations was recognized with three awards for 2017 campaigns at the Public Relations Society of America, Sierra Nevada Chapter Silver Spikes Awards, Nov. 16 at The Grove in Reno, Nev.

After taking a break during the Thanksgiving holiday, the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) resume prescribed fire operations next week, beginning Monday, November 27, 2017, weather permitting.

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the California Tahoe Conservancy will conduct prescribed fire operations above Incline Village, D.L. Bliss and Burton Creek state parks and near the airport in South Lake Tahoe. Smoke may be visible.

Hwy 89 / Lester Beach Road - 8 acres

Lake Valley, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service will continue Lake Tahoe Basin prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks, weather permitting. Operations are scheduled to take place at or near D.L. Bliss State Park, Carnelian Bay, Kings Beach, Incline Village, Diamond Peak Ski Resort area, Glenbrook, upper and lower Kingsbury Grade and south and east of the Lake Tahoe Airport.
