Firefighters have put a line around 89% of the King Fire

9/28/14 10:00 p.m. update: 4,420 firefighters and support staff are still on the scene of the 97.099 acre King Fire which is now 89% contained.

After 4 days of precipitation with accumulations of 1-3 inches, fire spread has been halted, however heat remains in the heavier fuels and in the heavy duff sheltered from the rain under the dense timber canopy. As the weather turns warm and dry over the next several days, expect to see an increase in fire activity and smoke production; however spread potential is extremely low, doe to the successful suppression efforts.

Mountain Coworking Alliance allows members to work from California to Colorado

This season, skiers and snowboarders can travel to a top-rated ski resorts and have space to work. The Tahoe Mountain Lab opened on Ski Run Blvd last year and gives locals and travelers the opportunity to have a dedicated workspace when they need it and now members can travel to other ski resort towns and use other locations.

Other mountain communities that offer the same workspace opportunities are located in Frisco, Avon, Basalt and Durango, Colorado, Jackson Hole, Wyoming as well as in both North and South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department responds to two small fires and diving accident

Two fires were quickly extinguished by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department in the early hours on Sunday.

In the first incident, a fire was reported off Echo Road behind the power substation near the Stateline Raley's. When firefighters arrived at about 12:20 a.m., they found five foot flames coming from what was later determined to be an illegal campfire at a transient person's camp. They quickly cut a line around the fire and contained it to a 10 foot square.

Bear Found Injured on the Slopes at Heavenly Valley

A young cub was found injured near Gunbarrel at Heavenly Valley Ski Resort on Monday. This story and video is from KCRA-TV out of Sacramento. South Lake Tahoe's Bruce Rettig is shown carrying the bear. The cub is now resting at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care.

Snowboarder Dies at Heavenly Ski Resort

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department has reported that an 18 year old snowboarder from Fountain Valley, CA died at Heavenly Ski Resort on Tuesday, February 4.

Ski Patrol was called when Wyatt James Colvard was found lying in the snow, unconscious and having difficulty breathing. They transported him to Boulder Lodge. When Tahoe Douglas Paramedics arrived at the lodge they began advanced life support. Colvard succumbed to his injuries.

Sierra at Tahoe Opens on Friday

Cold weather and snow this week is allowing Sierra-at-Tahoe® Resort to open for the 2013-14 season on Friday, December 6, 2013 with early season conditions and very limited terrain. The ski resort will operate the Easy Rider Express chairlift which will give skiers and snowboarders access to the right half of Broadway trail. This is a green run and will have small to medium rail features, giving guests a chance to get their park legs back underneath them.

On Sept. 7 you will be able to fish wherever you like without the need for a fishing license. However remember that you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.

Be sure to obey those rules and regulations, and don’t do something illegal. If you do, and if you get caught, it could be a very expensive experience.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office: Marine veteran commits suicide after messaging on Facebook

On Friday the El Dorado Sheriff’s Office received information that a suicidal man was in the forest behind Heavenly Ski resort. The man had posted a Facebook video of himself, which depicted him in this forested area, leaving a message to his family.

The man gave the GPS coordinates of his location on the the video. Other recent Facebook postings depicted the subject with a handgun wearing a military gas mask, and other photos of a .308 scoped sniper rifle and military backpack.

Lake Tahoe wildlife center is busy with bears

Winter is usually a slow time for a wildlife rescue center at Lake Tahoe, but this year is different. The center has more orphaned bear cubs than ever before. The good news is, they are all healthy and will be returned to the wild. ABC7 News took a look at what it takes to give a baby bear a second chance at life.

Missing snowboarder found alive, stayed overnight at Horizon

A search for missing snowboarder Corey Hoffman ended this morning when the Douglas County Sheriff's Office was contacted by a family member who informed them that Hoffman had phoned his father and advised he had spent the night at Horizon Casino Resort.

Deputies contacted Corey at the Stagecoach Lodge where he had proceeded to, and according to him he was unaware of the search for him. After a lengthy interview with Corey and his brother who had reported him missing, we are unable to determine exactly what transpired.

Lake Tahoe, Sierra brace for winter storms to arrive as Christmas travel period begins

A series of strong winter storms will arrive in three waves and when it is over, anywhere from 2 to 5 feet of snow will have dropped above Lake Tahoe, at ski resorts, on highways and throughout much of the Sierra in time for Christmas.

A Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect through Monday morning for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra as a strong series of systems moves into the region.

Periods of light to moderate snow will begin Friday and intensive early Saturday morning with moderate to heavy snow Saturday through Sunday night.

Sierra Resort at Lake Tahoe opens mountain top to bottom and West Bowl on Saturday

South Lake Tahoe man faces federal fraud charges; allegedly skied and collected workers compensation

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A federal grand jury returned an 11-count indictment today against Mark E. Leung, 58, of South Lake Tahoe, charging him with wire fraud, mail fraud, and making a false statement to obtain federal workers’ compensation, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

More Lake Tahoe resorts set to open for Thanksgiving weekend

Some years the weather has been unseasonably warm and the Lake Tahoe region is devoid of any skiing or snowboarding at Thanksgiving. However, this is certainly not one of those years.
There will be seven Lake Tahoe ski resorts open on Thanksgiving day and one more – Homewood ski resort – will open on Friday.
