With a stage name of Manny Maze, the 22-year-old South Lake Tahoe native has been perfecting his talent and mastering the making of the tracks he hopes will make him well known in the electronic music world.

U15 South Lake Tahoe All-Stars earn top honors in Carson City Tournament

The South Lake Tahoe All-Stars, a girls' U15 soccer team from South Lake
Tahoe, earned first place this past weekend at the All-Star Tournament in
Carson City.

The SLT team beat Bishop 5-0 and Carson City 5-0 on Saturday.

On Sunday, they beat Truckee 2-0 and Mammoth 2-1.

The Parks, Trails and Recreation Master Plan has identified the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex for future renovation, but exactly how that renovation will look is up to the public.

The City's Parks and Recreation Commission is holding a public workshop to gather input from the community on what their desires for the complex are.

SLT man to spend one year in jail and pay $160,000 for worker's comp fraud

A South Lake Tahoe man who spent at least 40 days a year skiing while claiming he was totally disabled from employment was sentenced today to one year in prison and ordered to pay $160,000 in restitution.

South Lake Tahoe Police looking for suspects in five burglaries

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is investigating several burglaries in the "Y" area of the city that occurred over the last two days.

On Wednesday, October 22 at 11:15 p.m., SLT Police responded to an alarm at the K-Mart Garden Center where they found the front glass door smashed in. Two suspects attempted to steal the cash registers but stole cash instead. They fled on foot and witnesses described the suspects as males wearing grey hooded sweatshirts.

The list of people against California's Proposition 47 grew today with the addition of El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson, Sheriff John D'Agostini and County Supervisors joining the fight against what has been touted "The Safe Neighborhood and Schools Act."

New Children's Book Explains Tahoe's Geology- Author to Speak at SLT Library

Home invasion robbery leads to the arrest of three suspected South Lake Tahoe gang members

Three South Lake Tahoe men are sitting in the El Dorado County Jail tonight on charges ranging from participating in a criminal street gang, conspiracy to commit a crime, burglary, robbery to manufacturing a controlled substance.

The charges stem from a home invasion robbery on October 11. Four men forced their way into a home in the Ski Run Blvd area, assaulted the victim and stole personal property. The victim reportedly knew the perpetrators.

South Lake Tahoe Woman Faces Slew of Charges after Hit and Run

A 22-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman remains jailed Tuesday evening on charges of hit and run, resisting, DUI and assault with a deadly weapon. Alejandra Lopez was driving westbound on Highway 50 in the vicinity of South Tahoe Middle School at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday morning when the series of events occurred that landed her in a cell at El Dorado County Jail. Lopez is accused of splitting the two westbound lanes with her car, hitting the cars in each lane. The drivers of the two cars which were hit got of their vehicles after the accident when Lopez tried to run one of them over.

Seven South Lake Tahoe City Council candidates vying for votes at forum Wednesday

The seven candidates for South Lake Tahoe City Council were at Wednesday nights Candidate Forum at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. The Tahoe Chamber and Tahoe Daily Tribune hosted the evening which had Rabbi Evon Yakar moderating the questions and answers.

About 100 people showed up to listen to panel who were given questions prepared by the chamber's new political committee as well as those asked by the audience. The questions were asked of different candidates so not everyone was asked the same one.

Author to Speak about Yosemite's 150th at SLT

Author and Sierra Nevada Native, Gary D. Noy, returns with his newest book, "Sierra Stories: Tales of Dreamers, Schemers, Bigots, and Rogues." This interesting collection highlights unusual or lesser-known stories of the Sierra Nevada experience with the focus of this presentation being the Yosemite Valley Grant Act of 1864, which brought the valley under government control and is considered the beginning of the California State Park system.  This year is the 150th anniversary of that event. The legislation was introduced by an El Dorado County resident, John Conness.

Fire danger still extremely high; bans in place

With the major forest fires burning throughout California, Oregon and Washington, it's a good time to remind everyone that there are fire restrictions in place in South Lake Tahoe.

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the U.S. Forest Service both have fire bans in place. Campfires and charcoal barbecues have been restricted to designated forest service recreation sites in the Lake Tahoe Basin since June 26, even if campers and back country hikers have a fire permit.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department responds to two small fires and diving accident

Two fires were quickly extinguished by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department in the early hours on Sunday.

In the first incident, a fire was reported off Echo Road behind the power substation near the Stateline Raley's. When firefighters arrived at about 12:20 a.m., they found five foot flames coming from what was later determined to be an illegal campfire at a transient person's camp. They quickly cut a line around the fire and contained it to a 10 foot square.

Man missing since 2010 may have been seen in South Lake Tahoe

Jackson Miller was just 18 when he was reported missing by his family in 2010 and he has not been seen by his family since. There may be renewed hope by his family after a South Lake Tahoe man reported that he saw Miller in the area in mid-July.

Soon after he went missing, Miller's car was found in the parking lot of the Golden Gate Bridge with his wallet and cell phone still inside. Authorities determined that no one jumped from the bridge the night Miller's car was found and video surveillance cameras showed him leaving his car and walking out of the parking area.

Springmeyer Garage in SLT leveled to make room for Auto Zone

In recent years, the Springmeyer Garage was slowly deteriorating and becoming an eyesore, but in its heyday from 1940 into the 1970s it was a thriving service station and car dealership.

Wednesday marked the end of the building which was once owned by Melvin "Buzz" Springmeyer and his wife, Marjorie Johnson Springmeyer from the pioneer South Lake Tahoe family.

It was torn down to make room for an Auto Zone store. Construction crews on site didn't know when building would begin.

Cyclists riding from the Atlantic to the Pacific stop off in SLT

What did you do for your summer vacation? Many students will hear that when they return to schools this fall but no group will probably have quite the story to tell as will a group of 30 college age students who were in South Lake Tahoe Thursday and Friday.

Fire overnight damages South Lake Tahoe motel

10:45 a.m. Update: What remains of the back of the Deerfield Lodge was evident this morning with smoke still coming from the ruined two story section. Six rooms were damaged with the three on the top floor totally destroyed by fire, and the three on the bottom with extensive water damage. Five vehicles were also damaged.

Permanent Drug Disposal Bin Now Available at SLT Police Department

There is now a permanent drug-disposal bin located in the lobby of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department thanks to the collaboration between the Department and the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition. This bin is in a secure location for anyone in the community to properly dispose of unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs.

Bijou Area Erosion Control Project providing environmental and appearance improvements

A unanimous vote by the South Lake Tahoe City Council on Tuesday paved the way for the formation of a Community Facilities District (CFD) in the Bijou area which will have a major impact on Lake Tahoe's water quality.

The $18M water project improvements include replacement of the failing Bijou Creek storm drainage culvert and construction of a regional storm water treatment system for the 42-acre Bijou commercial core project area. It will provide a third of the pollutant load reduction in the City's municipal stormwater system.

Grand Jury Report Released for El Dorado County: "Thread of Dysfunction"

The El Dorado County Grand Jury has released their final report for the 2013-14 year and several South Lake Tahoe situations have been brought to light.

According to Jury Foreman Neil Cunningham, the jury compiled 20 reports and recommendations which were created as they followed up on inquiries from citizens and Grand Jury required inspections.

County Asks for Community Input on Mental Health Services Act Plan for 2014/15

Studies show that an average of 4.6% of a population are in need of services to treat a serious mental illness at any given time. That number doubles in a population where people live below 200% of the poverty level (an annual income of $23,340 for 1 person, $47,700 for a family of 4 for example).

With the current population of El Dorado County at approximately 181,000, that means anywhere between 8,329 and 16,114 people are in need of Mental Health Services.

Suspicious Package Found at South Y Center, South Tahoe High on Lock Down

Update at 12:55 pm: At noon Thursday, a K-Mart employee overheard two youth in the store talking about planting a device. Once they departed, the employee searched for something out of the ordinary. He walked past the vendor mailboxes in between K-Mart and Raley's and thought he heard a ticking sound and called the SLT Police.

Aaron Crawford, the South Tahoe High on site officer responded first. He has extensive experience with bombs, and based on what he could hear at the mailboxes he felt the situation warranted more investigation.

Lake Tahoe Fuelwood Permits Go On Sale May 19

Fuelwood permits in both South and North Lake Tahoe go on sale next week. They'll start selling permits at the SLT office on Monday, May 19 and the NLT office on Wednesday, May 21.

Permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will sell the permits until November 14. The last day to cut wood is November 19, 2014.

Opportunities This Week to Get Connected in South Lake Tahoe

The City of South Lake Tahoe has two opportunities for locals to become involved in their community!

First on tap is Tuesday's night South Lake Tahoe Neighborhood Team Meeting at the SLT Recreation Center, located at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Neighborhood Service Team program serves to improve and preserve neighborhood vitality by fostering public participation and facilitating interaction between residents and your City government.

All residents within City limits are welcome to attend, regardless of which neighborhood you reside.

South Tahoe Vikings Host Division 1a Playoffs This Week

For the first time in 20 years, the South Tahoe Vikings varsity baseball team has made it to the Nevada State Playoffs. This is only the second time in school history for the team to make it to the post season, and the last time was in 1994, when current Viking coach Starbuck Teevan was a junior on the team.

They join Elko, Churchill County and Spring Creek in this weekend's Division 1a playoffs to be held Friday and Saturday at South Lake Tahoe's Todd Fields.

The Walls Came Tumbling Down....

The City of South Lake Tahoe issued a press release last week, inviting the public to a 9 a.m. ceremony on Monday morning to witness the long awaited removal of the fence at The Chateau Project near Stateline. Apparently the contractors on the project, SMC Contracting, had a different time frame in mind because when dignitaries, the press and the public showed up, the fence was already down.

The concrete barriers were all that remained along Highway 50, with some metal fencing and barriers remaining on the Stateline Avenue side.

Graduating Seniors at South Tahoe High No Longer Required to Buy Caps & Gowns

Walking down the aisle on the South Tahoe High School football field is a long standing tradition for graduating seniors.

While that tradition is in tact, the way caps and gowns are handled are changing.

Changes in the California Education Code - EC 49010(a) - now classify the graduation ceremonies as a educational activity which mandates students can no longer be charged a fee for the required cap and gown purchase.

South Lake Tahoe Community Input Sought for Wildfire Protection Plan

Living in a forest gives great benefits, but it also carries with it the risk of forest fires.

A Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for South Lake Tahoe is being developed jointly by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and Lake Valley Fire Protection District.

The community is being asked to complete a survey which will help the agencies prepare the CWPP. This will enable the creation of a plan on how the south shore will reduce it's risk of wildfire by identifying strategic sites and methods for fuel reduction projects.

Vote Online to Help South Lake Tahoe Projects Receive Raley's Reach Grants

Our Community has the opportunity to benefit from a Raley's grant program that will give money to the 10 most popular projects in many regions of California (138 projects submitted in total) . Several of our community members have submitted proposals for projects that would benefit The Environment; Health; or Kids and at least 4 proposals have been made for projects at one of our schools or for the entire school district. (There are other Tahoe proposals as well.)
