As we prepare to say goodbye (and maybe even good riddance) to 2020, the end of the year brings several holidays. Whether celebrating Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas, Boxing Day, Kwanza, and of course, New Year’s Eve, remember that indoor holiday gatherings with others not in your immediate household can put you, your community, and those you care about at risk. As challenging as it is, staying home for the holidays is your best way to protect yourself and loved ones, and help slow the spread of COVID-19 in a time when healthcare and essential workers critically need that support.

Sugar Bowl Resort and Royal Gorge Cross Country will open for the 2020/21 winter season on Friday, November 27, 2020 with new safety procedures.
“We are eager to welcome our guests back to the mountain and are thrilled that opening day is just a week away,” said Greg Dallas, President and CEO of Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge. “Our team has worked tirelessly on a reopening plan that keeps the safety of our guests and staff as the top priority.”

Lake Tahoe News was the preeminent source for news about the greater Lake Tahoe area from 2009-18. When it closed in summer 2018 the site was accessible via a paywall. That has been removed so people may access past stories without paying a fee.

The 20th Annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration returns once again to the Sierra on Saturday, March 7 at 9:00 am, at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.
Snow or no snow, event activities begin with a guided tour starting at 9:30 am with Norwegian native and longboard ski expert Nina MacLeod, who will also give a longboard ski demonstration if sufficient snow is present. Attendees should bring their own snowshoes and cross country skis.

After a gangbuster start to the winter season, a lot of us in Tahoe are wondering where all the snow has gone. Sitting here at the end of February with snowpack numbers dwindling, snow lovers are chomping at the bit, waiting to see the storm track shift back our way.
Still, the mountains have been buzzing with activity as skiers and snowboarders race to the mountains to enjoy what natural snow we’ve received and are ever thankful for the assist from local resorts’ snowmaking operations.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Snowshoe Cocktail Race series at Camp Richardson begins on January 18, with the second and third races on Feb. 15 and Mar. 21.
The high stepping fun returns as amateur contestants strap on snowshoes and try their luck in the resort’s annual race. This three-part series held on the beach in front of the Beacon Bar and Grill tests participants’ balance, speed, and agility as racers, cocktail trays in hand, navigate through obstacles, and up and down the beach.

Happy Easter! Spring Conditions continue as Resorts head into Easter Weekend. Many Resorts will be closing after April 21… And, some will remain open thru May and others into July… It’s been a great snow year and we wish you a safe Spring Skiing Season!
WEATHER – Greater Lake Tahoe Area:
Friday: Partly cloudy. Highs 61 to 71. Light winds becoming southwest around 10 mph with gusts up to 30 mph in the afternoon.
Laser measurement of Sierra snowpack from the air being considered in Sacramento

At a price tag of $150 million, the California legislature is considering a bill that, if approved, would change the way the Sierra snowpack is measured each year.
For 90 years the snowpack has been measured at several locations including Phillips, just west of Lake Tahoe. Normally performed in front of media, staff from the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) snowshoe into a spot where they stick a pole into the snow to measure the depth and water content of the snow.

Body of Carnelian Bay woman found one mile from car crash on SR28

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a 46-year-old Carnelian Bay woman was found Thursday morning after Placer County Search & Rescue teams had been looking for her since a Monday afternoon car accident.
Kathryn "Lani" Jones was found on a popular hiking and snowshoe trail about one-half mile from her home.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - John Albert Thompson, a Norwegian immigrant nicknamed Snowshoe Thompson, was the legendary 'Mailman of the Sierras' and a man many consider to be the father of California skiing.
His life will be celebrated in South Lake Tahoe on March 2, 2019, during the 19th annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The cost for the day is a $10 donation for adults and kids under 12 are free.

Scattered Snow Showers today but Fresh Snow over & Machine Groomed Packed Powder! It Doesn’t Get Any Better! More Lifts and Trails opening at Resorts. Expect Road Conditions to Change thru out the Day! Have Fun, Ski & Ride with a Buddy & Be Safe!
TODAY’S WEATHER: Expect Scattered Snow Showers. Snow accumulation of 2-4”. Highs: 26F-31F. (16F-21F on the slopes) Southwest Winds 10-15 mph. Ridge Gusts up to 55 mph.

Road Controls – Chain Restrictions posted on All Roadways in and around Lake Tahoe. Stay out of the Backcountry! Avalanche Danger is High! Ski or Ride with a Buddy if go off-piste… Have Fun & Be Safe!

Wind Holds and Lift Closures. Road Controls Posted for all roadways with chain restrictions posted. Hwy 88 & Emerald Bay Road Closed… Stay out of the Backcountry! Avalanche Danger is High! Be Safe!

Fresh Powder reported at all Resorts… Resorts are digging out and Lifts will be on Delayed openings today… Winter Strom Warning in effect thru 12 pm Sunday… Expect Upper Mtn. Wind Holds and Lift Closures. At this time (8:30 am), I-80, Hwy 88, Hwy 267, Hwy 431 & Emerald Bay Road are CLOSED… All other roadways have chain restrictions posted. Stay out of the Backcountry! Avalanche Danger is High! Be Safe!

Fresh Snow reported at the highest elevations at all resorts… Wet Weather, Strong Winds and Threat of Lightning has most scheduled lifts on Hold… Many Resorts opting to CLOSE Today… Call Ahead! Winter Strom Warning in effect thru 10 pm Thursday with snow level expected to lower today. Backcountry Avalanche Danger is High! Stay Dry and Be Safe!

Just returning from my annual road trip… My Road Trip to ReHab… I skied 10 different resorts in Utah & Colorado, while Lake Tahoe Got Hammered with big snows… Great to be back! Fresh Snow reported at all resorts, but Winter Strom Warning in effect thru 10 pm Thursday. Lifts are on Hold at many resorts. Call ahead…
