Mental health kiosks around South Lake Tahoe provide resources and information

Finding help for someone experiencing a mental health crisis can be difficult and it can also be a lofty task for a family member or friend seeking support for a loved one in need.
Six mental health kiosks have been placed through the community, each one with a highlight of local mental health services available along with educational materials. Brochures are in both English and Spanish, and updated regularly.

The commumity is invited to the Lake Tahoe Community College's Class of 2016 commencement on Friday, June 24 at South Tahoe Middle Schoolat 6:00 p.m. 174 students are graduating, 40 with honors, eight with highest honores, 36 with departmental certificates and 61 with a transfer degree that guarantees them a seat in a California State University this fall.
The theme of graduation this year is based on a William Arthur Ward quote: "If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it."

With funds from the Forest Service employee association’s Wellness, Recreation and Morale fund, the B&B cooks prepared beef tacos, Mexican black beans and Spanish rice to celebrate the upcoming Cino de Mayo holiday.

Eleven LTCC soccer players sign letters of intent
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/03/2016 - 8:43pmWednesday was National Signing Day, and eleven players on the the Lake Tahoe Community College Coyote soccer team signed letters of intent and accepted scholarships to attend four-year colleges. LTCC is the only Junior College in the country to send 100 percent of its sophomore team members to a four-year university to play sports.
Another STHS graduate and LTCC soccer player, Andres Orozco, signed a letter of intent to attend University of Antelope Valley in Lancaster, Calif.
The Coyotes made it to the state's Final Four this year and were the Golden Valley Conference Champs.
Dr. Lisa Carbonell is new physician at Barton Women's Health

She completed her residency at the University of Arizona Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona and is currently in the board certification process. Dr. Carbonell is fluent in both English and Spanish.
Marijuana focus at third home invasion robbery in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/09/2015 - 12:05amEl Dorado County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a home invasion robbery on December 4 at 7:00 a.m. on Meadow Circle in Rescue. The woman who called in the report told the 911 operator that one person had been stabbed.
Once deputies arrived they found three occupants at the home, including one male who was bleeding. They were all escorted to a safe place where medics could evaluate them.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

Design Workshop wins two Nevada awards

The company, who has an office on the South Shore, has completed projects in 30 countries over the last 45 years. They received the Elmer H. Anderson Parks Excellence Award for the work they have done to make the Ballardini Ranch Trailhead project a success. The project team also included Wood Rodgers, Spanish Springs Construction and Angie Persigehl.

Barton Health employee recognized as Language Access Champion

At Barton Health, Language Access Coordinator Tracy Young, RN, CMI has set out to improve the patient experience for all patients, regardless of the language they speak. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed and on June 5, the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) recognized Young as one of three Language Access Champions.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County, in partnership with California Emergency Food Link, is holding a free Farmer's Market for the South Lake Tahoe community. During their stop in town last month, almost 200 families received food.
On Wednesday, June 24, a truck full of food including fresh produce will be at the American Legion Hall located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Originally, Vinciguerra Construction was awarded the project even though their bid wasn't the lowest. The City felt the lowest bid, submitted by Burdick Excavating Company, didn't meet all of the federally required regulations (required due to federal financing).

New Court Commissioner appointed for South Lake Tahoe

Hoffman will be based in South Lake Tahoe but will serve in all of the branches in El Dorado County. He will hear all case types, but will specialize in cases involving family law, child support, domestic violence and civil harassment, juvenile dependency and delinquency, traffic, limited civil cases, as well as overflow matters as assigned by the Presiding Judge.

Across the nation, adjunct faculty at colleges will be walking off the job Wednesday in recognition of National Adjunct Walkout Day. In South Lake Tahoe though, full and part-time faculty at LTCC will host a "Teach-In" to educate students and the public about adjunct positions.
From 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., faculty, students and the public will meet in the Main Building's Commons to discuss part-time faculty concerns nationwide, including fair wages, improved job security, and better working conditions.
Popular program "Ski With a Ranger" returns to Heavenly Mountain Resort

Tours begin at the top of the gondola at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. every Monday and Friday. There is also a Spanish version starting at 10:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning Friday, February 20, 2015.
They run until April 10, weather permitting.
Op/Ed: Lead Safe Tahoe Program Wraps Up

The Lead Safe Tahoe program was established so that the City could assist members of our community in reducing their exposure to hazards from lead-based paint. In 2011 the City was awarded a second lead hazard control grant in the amount of $2.0 million dollars.

Frankie graduated from STHS in 2007, went to Santa Clara University where he majored in Biology and Spanish and is now at the University of San Francisco working on his masters degree. He visits South Lake Tahoe when time allows to see his parents and friends.
Volunteers complete Tahoe Keys storm drain marking; More help needed

Over 40 volunteers with the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s Stewards of Stormwater program marked 180 drains over several days in August and September, making it the first neighborhood at Tahoe to mark all its drains.

Area 1 is currently represented by Kerry David, who has announced his intention to seek re-election. Area 2 is currently represented by longtime Board member Roberta Mason, who is retiring from her seat after 40 years of service to the college. Area 5 is currently represented by Molly Blann, who announced in June that she is not seeking re-election.

All interested persons must be a registered voter and reside within the boundaries of Trustee Area #5 or #2. Area 5 covers a wide region from Cascade Lake to Meyers and Area 2 is part of the Al Tahoe and Bijou neighborhoods (see attached maps for exact boundaries).
The November 4th elections will be part of the El Dorado County wide ballot.

The filing period opens on Monday, July 14 for all interested City residents who are interested in running for the open seats.

The entire month is dedicated to honoring victims and survivors of both child abuse and sexual assault. With 80 percent of sexual assault victims being under the age of 30 and a report of child abuse made every ten seconds, it is vital we stand up against the dangers of the abuse. As two of our primary focuses at LVF, we are illuminating the truths and celebrating the efforts to combat the violence directly impacting our community.

Ski With a Ranger Program Returns to South Lake Tahoe

Everyone in invited to join them at Heavenly Mountain Resort on Mondays and Fridays at 10 am and 1 pm. The Ski With a Ranger tours begin at the top of the gondola ad last about one hour.
Participants must be intermediate level skiers/boarders or above and provide their own lift ticket. No reservations are required; attendance is on a first-come first-served basis.
Lake Tahoe Community College Offers a Learn Spanish Abroad Program

So far, LTCC is offering eight new transfer degrees, with another five slated to be launched in June 2014.

4.2 Magnitude Earthquake near Reno, NV
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/26/2013 - 8:38pmA shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported Monday afternoon one mile from Spanish Springs, Nev., near Reno. The report issued by the U.S. Geological Survey says the temblor occurred at 5:51 p.m. local time at a depth of 10.6 miles.
According to the USGS, the epicenter was six miles from Sun Valley, Nev., nine miles from Sparks, Nev., 11 miles from Reno and 35 miles from Carson City, Nev. It was felt as far away South Lake Tahoe, Grass Valley and Folsom, CA.
Low Turnout for Loop Road Project Meeting

Invitations were mailed and/or hand delivered to all residents in the proposed project area so they’d be able to better understand the process of relocation and financial reimbursement should the Revitalization Project be approved. Since many of those invited speak Spanish and Tagalog, interpreters were on hand to assist with translations, but no one in attendance needed their services.
