SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe is continuing the process on the planning, design and construction of the new Community Recreation & Aquatics Center.

For the past several years the City's Parks and Recreation Department has involved the public on the future of its aging recreation center and plans for a new building through community meetings and workshops.

New agreement in the works for 56-acre South Lake Tahoe downtown project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long-discussed 56-acre parcel in the middle of South Lake Tahoe is finally seeing movement again, and both the South Lake Tahoe City Council and El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) supporting further conversation. A formal agreement between the two is expected later in 2020 with another one-two years of public meetings, consultant review, and planning before plans are implemented. The California Tahoe Conservancy is funding the cost of the consultant, just as they did 30 years ago.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Classes will begin soon for those interested in becoming a lifeguard or swim instructor in South Lake Tahoe. Offered by the American Red Cross, both classes are open to community members and will be taught at the Recreation and Swim Complex.

Court on a delayed start; City of South Lake Tahoe offices open

The El Dorado County Superior Court is on a delayed start today, Monday, February 4. They will start at 10:00 a.m. They will probably close early so that staff and court users can get home safely.

The City of South Lake Tahoe offices will be open but the Recreation and Swim Complex will be closed all day today due to inclement weather and predicted dangerous blizzard conditions throughout the day.

All three local branches of El Dorado Savings will close at 2:00 p.m.

If any other businesses inform us they have different hours than normal today they will be posted on this story.

Businesses closed Monday in South Lake Tahoe due to weather

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe-area El Dorado County government offices will be closed Monday, February 4 due to weather. This includes the South Lake Tahoe Library.

Schools in South Lake Tahoe, Truckee Tahoe, Incline Village, Zephyr Cove will also be closed. Lake Tahoe Community College is closed.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort is closed.

Due to weather and road conditions, TTD transit routes 19x and 22 are canceled for the day, February 4, 2019.

Dance Classes at the Marcia Sarosik Dance Studio are closed today.

City of South Lake Tahoe holding mobile vending workshop

Food trucks can be found in communities across the country, and proponents of bringing the popular mobile vendors to South Lake Tahoe have asked City Council to look into updating regulations and changing code that currently forbid them in city limits. Council asked staff to look into food trucks, and the pros and cons of adding them in South Lake Tahoe.

City's business plan presented; Public encouraged to review

Every two years a new business plan is presented to the South Lake Tahoe City Council, outlining goals, the vision and strategic priorities. This is done after each election.

In February, City staff, Council and community members got together for a two-day strategic planning session, and the results that came out of that were put into the 2017/18 South Lake Tahoe Business Plan.

New company on board to plan new South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center

A new partner is now on board to help bring a new recreation center and swim complex to South Lake Tahoe, construction of which could start as early as 2018.

Voters in November approved a two percent Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) increase to fund the new project that benefits not only locals but tourists as well.

Evacuation Center opened in South Lake Tahoe

7:25 p.m. update Sunday - A second evacuation site has been set up at South Tahoe Middle School in the Multi-Purpose Room. It will accommodate pets and is staffed by the City of South Lake Tahoe staff and South Tahoe Action Team volunteers.

The City of South Lake Tahoe and American Red Cross have opened an evacuation center at South Tahoe High School in the school's student union.

It is located at 1735 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. The Recreation Swim Complex is not available as an evacuation center due to flooding at that location.

City of South Lake Tahoe warns residents and visitors of major weather event

If the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecast is correct, South Lake Tahoe could see the largest rain/snow weather event since the memorable floods of 1997 and 2005.

Those traveling to South Lake Tahoe, and those that live here, are being warned to be prepared for the storm which is slated to reach the Sierra overnight Saturday and last until Monday.

City celebrates passage of Measure P in Tuesday's election

Measure P, the two percent raise in transient occupancy tax for lodging properties in the City limits, has passed by a fairly large margin. With 100 percent of the precincts counted, a "yes" vote of 3,214 to 1,537 has passed by a 35.30 percent difference in the unofficial results.

The measure will use the funds raised by the extra tax to support recreational improvements in the City. A new recreation center, competitive pool and ball courts are in the plans.

Letter: Boys & Girls Club and SLT Lodging Association back Measure P

Measure P will be a key initiative on the City of South Lake Tahoe’s Nov. 8 ballot as a tourist-only tax to help rebuild the area’s aging Recreation Center.

Without raising taxes on local residents and businesses, Measure P will bring an estimated extra $2 million a year to support the community. The Lodging Association has voted unanimously to support further recreation in South Lake Tahoe. If passed by a two-thirds vote, Measure P will increase transient occupancy tax by 2 percent to 12 percent.

'Keep the Lights on' event highlights need for after school programs

Now that school is out, the City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department is offering their summer program, South Tahoe Adventure Camp (STAR).

STAR Youth Camp is designed for children ages 6-12 years (entering grades 1st-6th), Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., June 20 – August 19. The camps’ slogan is..."NO CHILD LEFT INSIDE!” Their mission is to provide an active, healthy, and safe environment for youth to learn and play. With two City Council members missing, vote on potential tax increases delayed

In just over one hour, the South Lake Tahoe City Council finished up all of their business for the day, but not all that was on the agenda.

City Council members Hal Cole and Tom Davis were both missing from the May 3 meeting, Davis due to a planned County Supervisor luncheon and Cole due to illness.

City Council to look at tax increases to pay for roads, facilities, fleet and recreation

The South Lake Tahoe City Council will have item on their agenda May 3 that will not only affect local residents, but tourists as well. They are contemplating some tax initiatives that could appear on the November ballot, initiatives needed to pay for much needed city improvements including roads, facilities, replacing an aging fleet, a remodel of the recreation and swim complex and more.

Practice kayak rolling skills at City's Rec Center pool

The City of South Lake Tahoe has opened the swimming pool at the Recreation and Swim Complex to kayakers who want to practice their rolling skills before heading out to the lake and rivers.

The controlled and calm waters of the pool are an excellent place to practice. It will be open to kayaks every Saturday through May 21 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

There is no instruction available. Those wishing to use the facilities must bring their own kayak. Helmets and life vests are recommended.

Sign up to coach baseball this spring and get free SF Giants tickets

Coaches are needed for the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department's new Junior Giants program for ages 5 to 18.

As a benefit, all coaches who sign up now will get two tickets to the Giants vs. Diamondbacks game on April 19, 2016 at 7:05 p.m. at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

City looking for kids ages 5-13 to be part of Junior Giants

All boys and girls ages 5 to 13 are invited to participate in the Junior Giants program in South Lake Tahoe this summer.

Space available at South Lake Tahoe's Red Cross lifeguard training

The South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department is offering American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard Training. Participants must register for this class by March 14th at www.cslt.sportssignup.com. The class is conducted by American Red Cross Certified Instructor Liz Terzian and will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will be trained and certified to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illness until EMS (emergency services) take over.

Automated External Defibrillators installed at City buildings

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department installed Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in all city staffed buildings this week including the airport, Parks and Recreation Swim Complex, Motor Pool, Senior Center, Transit Center, Services Center and at the Police Department.

Review plans for future of Regan Beach at community meeting

Previous public meetings to gather public input were held in 2014 and 2015. Recently an online survey was posted for community members who could not attend meetings to submit their comments.

Give input on the future of Regan Beach

In August of 2014, the City of South Lake Tahoe invited community members to take part in planning the future of Regan Beach.

Since then, the City has received completed surveys, analyzed them and hired Design Workshop to create a conceptual design for $98,836.

Now, its time for the public to weigh in on that design.

The Regan Beach community outreach meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the gym of the SLT Recreation and Swim Complex.

An Opening Day celebration is planned at the South Tahoe Little League Complex this Saturday, April 25th. A parade and ribbon cutting ceremony are planned prior to the start of scheduled games. The parade will start on the street next to the South Tahoe Middle School tennis courts at 9:00 a.m. with a planned parade path to follow Lyons Avenue to Rufus Allen, and into the major’s field by way of the snack shack entrance. Parking will not be available at South Tahoe Middle School due to the eWaste collection event. Parking is available along Rufus Allen Blvd.

Community fitness challenge being held at SLT Recreation Center

Looking for some incentive to start getting more exercise? There is a new challenge program being offered called the Monthly Wellness Challenge where community members will compete for a monthly certificate and gift package.

The month of March is called 'Sweat Sessions' and will track the number of hours particpants spend in the Recreation Center's weight room. After paying the daily use fee, participants will track the amount of time spent in the weight room from March 1 to March 31. Sessions are tracked in 30 minute intervals.

Lifeguard training being offered by the American Red Cross

Learning how to respond to aquatic emergencies is the focus of two American Red Cross Lifeguard training sessions being offered in South Lake Tahoe over the next few months.

Participants must be at least 15 years of age, be able to swim 300 yards continuously while demonstrating breathing control and rhythmic breathing, tread water for two minutes using the legs only, and complete a timed event. The class includes 7 hours and 25 minutes of online learning and 20 hours of hands-on instruction.

Recreation and Swim Complex changes hours of operation on Sundays

Starting Sunday, September 7, hours for the South Lake Tahoe Recreation and Swim complex will change.

On Sundays, from 8 a.m. to noon, lap swimming, the weight room and other activities will be available. Formerly it was open from noon until 6 p.m.

Hours will remain the same for the rest of the week: Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Parks, Trails and Recreation Draft Master Plan released by City and County

The Recreation Mater Plan has been in front of local citizens, community groups and staff for the past several months, and now their ideas and suggestions has formulated a Draft Master Plan that can now be reviewed.

The Plan is intended to provide strategic guidance for the management, improvement and development of City and County parks, in conjunction with the recreation opportunities provided by other public and private entities in the South Shore.
