It's been one heck of a summer in terms of driving around town. Between Echo Summit and the Meyers roundabout, the horrible accident at Elks Club, US50 through town and then the construction at Stateline that caused delays back to Zephyr Cove in mid-September. Luckily, the Stateline issue was quickly remedied, the highway at Elks Club seems mostly repaired, and the Meyers roundabout turned out great.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 36-year-old man from North Highlands, California has been identified as the driver of the gasoline tanker involved in Saturday's deadly crash and explosion.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has released more information based on its investigation. No names are being released at this time.

MEYERS, Calif. - At its meeting today, the California Tahoe Conservancy (Conservancy) Board approved a grant of up to $240,286 to California State Parks for forest health management at Burton Creek State Park. Funds for the project come from an earlier grant to the Conservancy from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) for high-priority forest health projects designed to combat climate change and reduce the risk of wildfire.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – As we move into the warmest and driest days of summer and early fall, the threat of catastrophic wildfire increases throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin. High winds, low relative humidity, and dry vegetation are a dangerous combination. When dangerous fire weather is forecasted, the National Weather Service may issue a Red Flag Warning.

MEYERS, Calif. - During the next meeting of the Meyers Advisory Council some important issues for residents of El Dorado County will be covered, including presentations on a parcel tax hike for both Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) and the County.

On Monday, July 29 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Council will hold their meeting in the 2nd-floor conference room in the California Conservation Corps (CCC) Building in Meyers. It is open to the public.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) will limit public access and temporarily close portions of some south shore beaches starting Friday, June 28, 2019. They announced beaches they own near Lakeview Commons and the Upper Truckee Marsh will close for public safety and to protect sensitive wildlife habitat and areas prone to erosion.

The California Tahoe Conservancy voted during their board meeting on Thursday to allow El Dorado County to use five of their parcels to develop a water quality project in the Tahoe Paradise neighborhood.

The project will include the construction of conveyance channels and detention basins, and install perforated pipes to infiltrate stormwater, which will increase groundwater recharge and reduce stormwater volumes, peak flows, and stormwater pollutants.

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) members from all over California came together on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course to celebrate the new DAR Chapter in South Lake Tahoe.

The chapter was officially organized by the National Society on February 5 of this year, and was welcomed to the city with a proclamation at the South Lake Tahoe City Council's April 16 meeting, Sunday's event was the formal recognition of the chapter's status as the newest in California. City Council member Tamara Wallace attended the event and read the proclamation to the attendees.

At its Board meeting in Sacramento on Thursday, the California Tahoe Conservancy accepted a $1.95 million grant from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy to co-manage the Tahoe-Central Sierra Initiative (TCSI), a pioneering landscape-level effort to restore forest and watershed resilience to more than 2.4 million acres.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Five developed recreation sites around Lake Tahoe will get improved access for those with disabilities after a vote by the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) Board.

The approved the California Tahoe Conservancy Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan (Plan) authorizes staff to take all actions necessary to carry out the barrier removals at five of their sites on the California side of Lake Tahoe:

• Kings Beach Plaza (8608 North Lake Blvd., Kings Beach);
• North Tahoe Beach (7860 North Lake Blvd., Kings Beach);

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After Richard Solbrig told the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board of Directors he was retiring in January 2019 after 29 years with the agency the hunt was on for a new general manager.

It turned out they didn't have to look far.

John Thiel had been hired by Solbrig in 1992 as a staff engineer and he worked his way up through the ranks over the last 27 years until the Board chose him as the new general manager.

Weather permitting, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection Districts and the U.S. Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in multiple locations around Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy has announced that the gates to Van Sickle Bi-State Park are closed for the winter season. Although the park's facilities are closed, the 725 acre park remain open year-round and are enjoyed by those on day outings, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just having fun in the snow.

The winter closure includes the Park’s gates, roads, parking lots, water, restrooms and trash collection. The Conservancy reminds visitors to pack out all trash.

In August, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) awarded $27.5 million to fund high-priority forest health projects designed to combat climate change and reduce the risk of wildfires.

During their board meeting Thursday the California Tahoe Conservancy Board accepted their portion, a $2.3 million grant, for fire prevention projects and related efforts as part of the Tahoe-Central Sierra Initiative.

A Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) agreement between the California Tahoe Conservancy and U.S. Forest Service is in the works that would allow the Conservancy to begin maintaining and restoring USFS urban lots in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

There are less than 2,200 urban lots that can fall into this agreement, most of which are less than one-acre and located near lots the Conservancy already owns and maintains.

The Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) will be moving their corporation yard from a 2.21-acre parcel of environmentally sensitive land to a developable 0.99-acre parcel adjacent to the Tahoe Keys Marina.

On Wednesday, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board authorized their staff to move forward with an agreement with TKPOA. This move allows the Conservancy to restore the site as part of its Upper Truckee Marsh restoration project, one of the largest and most important restoration projects in the history of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Dear Mayor David and Council Members:

Due to high water in Lake Tahoe, the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) has announced that they will temporarily close portions of some South Lake Tahoe beaches for public safety and to protect sensitive habitat and areas prone to erosion.

This news affects the Upper Truckee Marsh and three CTC beaches near Lakeview Commons (see map above), both areas heavily used during the 4th of July holiday.

Recreationalists that frequent these beaches will need to make alternative plans. CTC asks for patience and cooperation during this time of high water.

California residents yesterday voted to pass Proposition 68, approving a $4 billion investment to protect the state’s unique natural resources and provide protections from the growing threat of climate change.

The California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) is kicking off the firewood collection season with a free day at Van Sickle Bi-State Park in South Lake Tahoe on Monday, April 30 starting at 9:00 a.m.

This one-day only collection day will have 25-30 cords of firewood stacked and ready for pick up on a first come, fire served basis.

Every year the CTC offers two cords of word for personal use only through the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Prescribed fire operations will continue around several areas around Lake Tahoe this week, weather permitting. he Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations in Sugar Pine Point and Burton Creek state parks on the West Shore, Carnelian Bay and Kings Beach on the North Shore, Logan Shoals on the East Shore and on Kingsbury Grade and off Ski Run Boulevard on the South Shore. Smoke may be present.
