Small New Year's Eve crowds at Stateline keep US50 open
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/01/2021 - 7:01pmSTATELINE, Nev. - It was a much quieter holiday at Stateline this year with a decrease in calls for service, five arrests, and the lowest number of New Year's celebrants in a few decades.
US 50, the highway that runs from South Lake Tahoe into Stateline was not closed due the low number of people in the area. Law enforcement was able to keep those wanting to bring in the new year outside to the sidewalk or they stayed inside the casinos.
"The celebrants were well behaved and embraced the New Year’s Eve celebration," said Douglas County Undersheriff Ron Elges.
Man rescued from Lake Tahoe after cries for help heard from shore
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/22/2020 - 7:29pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - People at Regan Beach in South Lake Tahoe heard a man's calls for help about 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, and their call to 911 brought out multiple agencies.
The 36-year-old man from Richmond, California had been kayaking about 400-500 yards offshore when his kayak starting taking on water through a hole.

Multiple agencies responded to the 5:36 p.m. call for help and a possible drowning on the lake near Nevada Beach including the Coast Guard, Tahoe Douglas Fire Department, South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, El Dorado County Sheriff (EDSO) and Douglas County Sheriff's Offices (DCSO).

At 4:00 p.m. on July 25, 2018, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) was called out to the Rockwater Apartments in the 700 block of Emerald Bay Road. A fire had erupted on the deck of one of the apartments, apparently at a propane tank.

She has earned the name "Angel of Tahoe" through her large donations, including $10 million to Barton Memorial Hospital for their new Robert Maloff Center of Excellence (Wellness and Sports Performance Center) and $5.8 million to Lake Tahoe Community College for the Lisa Maloff University Center. To date, Mrs. Maloff has donated $35 million in the past four years.
Explosions close Highway 50 at Stateline

10:45 p.m. update: Limited traffic will soon be allowed back on two lanes of Highway 50 through Stateline after NV Energy has re-energized their lines and power is back on in the area. As of 10:30 p.m., Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said it should be about an hour longer until open.
Explosion holes are being patched temporarily and traffic will not be allowed to drive on the plates.
Bay Area toddler dies after being found in casino hot tub

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has announced that a four-year-old from Redwood City, California has died on the South Shore.
At 1:27 p.m. Sunday, December 17, emergency personnel were called to MontBleu Casino and Resort in Stateline, Nevada after the toddler was found in a hot tub. He was transported by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department to Barton Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The next of kin has been notified.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Department is holding their annual Labor Day Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, September 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Station 23 at 193 Elks Point Road.
Meet TDFD Chief Scott Baker and the firefighters, tour the station, play fire safety games, learn how to use an extinguisher, see bomb squad demonstrations and learn how to properly install a car seat.
Since its a pancake breakfast, they are also serving up breakfast! A $5 donation is suggested for adults and kids over 12, those under 12 are free.
Funds raised go to community causes such as youth scholarships.
Zephyr Cove power plant fire left thousands in the dark

UPDATE 12:00PM - Power is still out to 2,418 NV Energy customers. The power company estimates they will have power restored by 2:00 p.m. Monday. All Liberty Utilities customers have had their electricity restored.
Pony Express rider makes his way through South Lake Tahoe

Complete loss after roof collapses on Kingsbury Grade condo

Tahoe Douglas Fire Department (TDFD) responded to the March 10 incident on Kingsbury Grade on the lake side of its intersection with South Benjamin Drive.
"Looks like a total loss as the only thing still standing is garage, but even that ceiling is damaged," said Tahoe Douglas Fire Marshall Eric Guevin.
South Lake Tahoe man injured, Wellington woman killed in Kingsbury Grade collision
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/23/2016 - 1:13pmKingsbury Grade was closed for several hours Friday after a collision between a motorhome and a Nissan Pathfinder sent several victims to area hospitals and resulted in the death of one of the drivers.
At 1:30 p.m., the two vehicles collided about 1.5 miles down from the summit on the valley side of the road. One person from each vehicle had to be extricated according to Fire Marshall Eric Guevin of Tahoe Douglas Fire Department.
Care Flight landed at the bottom of Kingsbury Grade to transport the victims.
Another suspicious fire on the South Shore, this time in Rabe Meadows
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/06/2016 - 4:16pmA series of fires along the South Shore of Lake Tahoe are still under investigation and have caused some concern among residents. The most recent one, on Tuesday, burned a portion of grass at Rabe Meadow near Kahle Drive at Stateline.
The fire, which burned a patch 30 feet by 40 feet, was reported at 10:13 a.m. Both Tahoe Douglas Fire Department and the US Forest Service responded.
Man dies while scuba diving in Glenbrook Bay as he explored SS Tahoe

Marine Patrols from Douglas County Sheriff, Washoe County Sheriff and El Dorado County Sheriff, along with Tahoe Douglas Fire all responded to the distress call of a scuba diver in trouble just after 10:00 a.m.
Coast Guard continuing investigation into Tahoe Queen fire
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/17/2016 - 11:40amAn investigation team from the Coast Guard is continuing their investigation into Tuesday's fire on board the Tahoe Queen, which suffered severe damage while it was docked at the pier at the Zephyr Cove Marina on Lake Tahoe's South Shore.
At this point they have not completed their investigation and the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/16/2016 - 8:12amZEPHYR COVE, NV - Investigators and vessel inspectors from Coast Guard Sector San Francisco are on the scene of Tuesday's fire on board the 119-foot passenger Lake Tahoe paddle wheel boat, the Tahoe Queen.
"Most of the damage is limited to the boat's pilot house and second deck," Lt. Jake Aulner of the U.S. Coast Guard told South Tahoe Now. "This can be attributed to the great response by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department."
Aulner and the team from USCG Yerba Buena Island will be at the scene until the cause of the morning blaze is determined.
Boat sinks in Lake Tahoe with 4 men on board; All rescued after late night search
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/14/2016 - 10:37amFour men from San Francisco are very lucky today after being rescued early Sunday morning after their rented boat sank three miles off shore in the cold waters of Lake Tahoe.
Shouts for help were heard from people staying both at the Zephyr Cove Presbyterian Center and in Marla Bay, and 911 calls were made into the Tahoe Douglas Fire station.
For reasons unknown at this time, the boat started taking in water at about 10:00 p.m. None of the four passengers were wearing life jackets.
New chief at the helm of Tahoe Douglas Fire Department
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/22/2016 - 3:07pmRetired Tahoe Douglas Fire Chief Ben Sharit can now rest assured that his former fire department is in good hands with the promotion of Scott Baker to Fire Chief. Baker took over the controls in July 1.
He came to the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department in December as Assistant Chief as a nation-wide search, but it turned out they didn't have to look far as Baker was Division Chief of Fleet and Facilities for the Reno Fire Department.
Latest Lake Tahoe fatality identified

A passerby found 21-year-old Jawahar Kaliyamurthy floating near the unoccupied jet ski east of Meeks Bay at about 11:38 a.m. on the 25th, called for help, pulled the man from the water and began CPR.
Pyrotechnic crews finish up preparations for Lake Tahoe fireworks show

"We love out job," said Zambelli Fireworks Western Region Project Manager John Hagan. "We can use explosives to make people happy."
Zambelli is the company hired to produce the 25 minute pyrotechnic show over Lake Tahoe on July 4, starting at 9:45 p.m.
Fire pit restrictions differ on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe

Restrictions differ between Tahoe Douglas Fire Department and the City of South Lake Tahoe and Lake Valley Fire Departments.

Zephyr Fire Crew gets a permanent home

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Department's wildland fire/fuels reduction team was officially welcomed into new digs with an open house this week. The Tahoe Chamber was on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony, but it wasn't any normal ribbon. Zephyr Fire crew members cut through a wooden ribbon with a chainsaw.
Firefighters put out suspicious brush fire in Rabe Meadow

Firefighters from Tahoe Douglas Fire Department (TDFD) and the U.S. Forest Service got early control of the fire which was burning in dry brush on Forest Service land just northeast of the bike bath.
The fire is under investigation according to Fire Marshal Eric Guevin. "Anyone with information is to call the Forest Service or TDFD via 911," said Guevin.
Dozens of Skyland residents evacuated during fire drill

That opportunity came on Monday when the Tahoe Douglas Fire District and Skyland Fire Adapted Community executed an inter-agency wildfire evacuation drill in the Skyland neighborhood.
The drill simulated a real evacuation event to give residents the opportunity to practice evacuating from their homes and getting to the designated safe zone.
Hot tub sets off early morning Round Hill fire
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/08/2015 - 8:52amAn early morning fire in the Round Hill neighborhood on the South Shore was caused by a faulty hot tub.
A person near the home at Seminole Way saw smoke and flames and alerted the three residents of the home at 4:48 a.m. They all got out safely.
It appears that something inside the hot tub caused a fire which ignite the hot tub cover and skirting around the tub. Flames got to the siding of the home and burned about a 10 foot by 20 foot section according to Eric Guevin, Fire Marshal of the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department.

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Department is holding a blood drive in honor of Fresno Fire Department Captain Pete Dern who was burned over 70% of his body while responding to an house fire in March.
Not only will donations show support for first responders who put their lives on the line to aid and protect us, donors also earn a chance at winning one of two $750 Southwest Airlines gift cards.
Tahoe Douglas Fireman completes HAZMAT

Ghisletta of the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department just completed a four week HAZMAT course, earning his HAZMAT Technician certification and a spot on the Quad County HazMat Team. This is a specialized team from Douglas, Central Lyon, Carson City and Storey Counties.
Ghisletta began his career with the fire district in 2008 as a seasonal Wildland Firefighter/Crew Foreman with the Zephyr Fire Crew. He attended paramedic school with REMSA in 2012 and was promoted to a firefighter/paramedic in 2013.

Donate blood in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday

Inventories of some blood types have taken a dip in recent weeks and are needed in the community. United Blood Services watches their inventories closely to ensure they have the necessary blood products on the shelf for people in our community in need of a blood transfusion for elective and trauma surgeries and other serious medical conditions.
They are holding a blood drive at the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department at 193 Elks Point R on Thursday, September 25 from noon to 5 p.m. to help fill those shelves with blood.

Generator malfunction at MontBleu creates lots of smoke, no fire
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/21/2014 - 7:58pmAs they were preparing to power up the hotel and casino during Sunday's power outage, MontBleu's generator had a malfunction, sending smoke billowing out of the resort.
Tahoe Douglas Fire Department responded. "We responded to a generator malfunction," said Eric Guevin, Tahoe Douglas Fire Marshall. "The generator unit was producing a substantial amount of smoke and we had to shut it down."
MontBleu got another generator up and running and emergency power was sent to the casino and hotel.
Fire Reported Near Kingsbury Middle School
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/18/2014 - 2:17pm7:45 pm update: According to Eric Guevin, Tahoe Douglas Fire District's Fire Marshall, the cause of the fire by Kingsbury Middle School was human caused and is under investigation. Due to quick response by the Zephyr Fire Crew and Tahoe Douglas Firefighters, along with favorable weather, the fire only burned a 50' x 50' area. A resident in the area, Dr. Jeff Behar, rode his bike to the scene when he saw the smoke and found the crews distinguishing the fire and provided South Tahoe Now with photos.

Suspicious Fire in South Lake Tahoe Being Investigated

South Lake Tahoe Police officers and fire fighters responded to a residential fire in the 1100 block of Long Valley Avenue at 6:10 pm. They found the home fully engulfed in flames with fire starting to spread to nearby trees, though they were able to contain the fire to the area of the burning home. It appears the house is likely to be a total loss.
The house has received the attention of the police and fire department prior to Wednesday night's fire.

Minden man jailed for making bomb threat, DUI at South Shore Lake Tahoe
Submitted by Editor on Sun, 03/31/2013 - 9:22amDouglas County Sheriff's Office authorities have arrested a 29-year-old Minden man for making a bomb threat during a traffic stop late Saturday at Highway 50 and Kahle Drive.
At 10:58 p.m. a Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic enforcement stop on a black Dodge SRT8 at Hwy 50 and Kahle Drive, said Sgt. Pat Brooks.
The driver, Adam Smith, 29, of Minden was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. At the time, deputies noticed a wire from the front seat to the trunk. They asked Smith about the wire and, he told them, “It’s a bomb.”
