Lake Tahoe area roadwork for September 17-23

The following is the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) roadwork schedule for the Lake Tahoe area.

EMERGENCY PROJECTS

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Forest Road to the El Dorado Ditch in Fresh Pond: Westbound motorists can expect #2 lane closed for pavement repair. Completion is expected by the end of October.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): The highway is reduced to one lane in each direction at Bridal Veil Falls for slope and roadway repair work. Completion is expected by the end of this year.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

Investigation into Lake Valley Fire Captain injury completed

A Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) Captain who was injured when he fell off a fire truck is home recovering and the investigation into his accident has concluded.

On August 27, 2017 at approximately 3:11 p.m., Lake Valley Fire Engine 7 was returning to the South Shore after responding to a traffic collision near Strawberry. As the truck with its occupants began an incline on Highway 50 around a curve between Twin Bridges and Camp Sacramento, the captain began to remove his turncoat. In order to fully remove it, he disconnected his seat belt and headset.

Expect delays with start of new road project at Emerald Bay

Work has begun on a stretch of State Highway 89 near Emerald Bay to replace a retaining wall and the extend an existing barrier slab and rail.

The contractor, Stewart Engineering, Inc. has established a staging area at the Eagle Falls parking area on the southbound side of the road. Visitors to the area should note that most, if not all, of the parking spots will be blocked by equipment.

Caltrans said work will take place Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. There will be reversing one-way traffic control so motorists should expect delays of up to 20 minutes.

Slinkard Fire almost completely contained

The Slinkard Fire is now 93 percent contained after it burned 8,925 acres near Topaz Lake. The fire originated in Slinkard Valley and was caused by a lightning strike on Aug. 29, 2017.

Due to fire crews getting the upper hand on the fire, the Southern California Incident Management Team 3 will transition on Thursday to a local Type 4 incident management team.

Highway 395 remains open and Highway 89 over Monitor Pass will remain open to residents only until further notice and will be continually evaluated.

Slinkard Fire near Topaz now at 49 percent contained; 9.091 acres burned

The Slinkard Fire is currently located on the west slope of Antelope Valley, west of Topaz Lake and eight miles north of Walker, Calif. After being started by lightning on August 29, it has burned through cheat grass, sagebrush and pinyon/juniper.

418 firefighting crew members are working the fire which is located in Alpine and Mono counties in California and Douglas County in Nevada.

Woman injured after crashing into traffic signal

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - A local woman was injured Saturday afternoon and she crashed her van into the light signal at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Takela Drive.

The unidentified woman was transported to Barton Hospital with serious injuries.

A traffic signal was knocked off the pole, leaving it dangling over Lake Tahoe Blvd. Caltrans is on their way to South Lake Tahoe from Sacramento to fix the light.

Beacon light at Camp Richardson here to stay, for now

The pedestrian hybrid beacon installed at the Camp Richardson crosswalk will remain active this weekend and until further notice.

Lane restrictions and work hours to increase on Hwy 50 in South Lake Tahoe

Work on the $56 million Highway 50 project in South Lake Tahoe is suspended for the Labor Day weekend, but once the holiday traffic leaves drivers can expect longer delays when lane restrictions are increased.

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 12:01 a.m., contractor Security Paving Inc. may reduce the highway to one open lane iSn each direction around the clock until 11 a.m. on Fridays.

Beginning Sept. 10, work will be around the clock from midnight Sunday to 11 a.m. Friday each week, with weekends free of construction. Motorists can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

Expect Kingsbury Grade lane closures as roadwork begins

A $4 million project to enhance 15,000 feet or eroding roadway drainage pipe on Kingsbury Grade will begin on Sept. 11 and last through late summer of 2018, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced today.

Single lane closures with a traffic flagger will periodically be in place on the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade between mileposts 3 and 11. Most of the work will take place Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. with periodic Saturdays lane closures.

Slinkard Fire near Topaz Lake burns 9,061 acres and remains 20% contained

UPDATE 9/3 9:00pm - 9,051 acres have now burned in the Slinkard Fire near Topaz Lake. It remains at 20 percent contained.

UPDATE 9/2 2:45PM - The Slinkard Fire is burning in three counties and two states: Mono, Alpine and Douglas County in California and Nevada. It has consumed 7,881 acres since starting by lightning on August 29. Firefighters now have a containment line around 20 percent of the fire. It is located in Slinkard Valley, and on the west slope of Antelope Valley, west of Topaz Lake and eight miles north of Walker, Calif.

Construction on new trail near Incline Village suspended for holiday

Due to anticipated heavy holiday traffic near Incline Village this Labor Day weekend, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has put work on hold at the State Route 28 shared-used path Saturday, Sept. 2 through Monday, Sept. 4.

NDOT and Granite Construction officials timed current work to be at a point where State Route 28 could be accessible in both directions for the weekend. Work will remain in progress through Friday, Sept. 1 and will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 a.m.

Vacation rentals again on South Lake Tahoe City Council agenda

Renting a home while on vacation is the trend in many tourist destinations, not only in Lake Tahoe, but across the globe. This new way of vacationing has not come without issues so many towns are creating ordinances or, like in Anaheim and other cities, banning them.

Slinkard Fire road closure update: Highways 395 and 208 affected

UPDATE 3:30PM - Residents with proper identification will be allowed to pass through closed highway areas in Topaz Estates and north of the fire. School buses will be running as normal for Thursday afternoon.

The Nevada Highway Patrol and California Hwy Patrol are working traffic control for the Slinkard Fire in Topaz near the Nevada and California state line.

North of the fire, Hwy 395 is closed in both directions at Leviathan Mine Road, which is south of Gardnerville, Nevada.

South of the fire, Hwy 395 is closed in both directions at Hwy 182 in Bridgeport, Calif.

Lake Valley firefighter in stable condition after falling from fire truck

On Sunday, August 27, a Lake Valley Fire Protection District crew responded to a traffic collision on Highway 50 near Twin Bridges, west of Lake Tahoe.

At 3:15 p.m., as the crew headed eastbound back to their station in Meyers, a firefighter was ejected from the vehicle. According to the report, a Blue Sheet, the vehicle was going around "a sweeping left-hand curve" near the Rock Crusher area when the incident occurred.

Driver arrested after hitting 18-year-old cyclist, then running him over

UPDATE 8/29/17 8:00AM - A 63-year-old man has been arrested on charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon after he allegedly ran over the 18-year-old cyclist he thought stole his son's bicycle.

Esteban Hernandez Cuenca was arrested and is currently in the El Dorado County Jail on $25,000 bail.

The unidentified victim was air lifted to Renown Medical Center with serious injuries. His current condition is unknown.

Both men are from South Lake Tahoe.

Law enforcement strives for zero fatalities during holiday weekend

Fatalities due to impaired driving and riding continue to be a top traffic issue on Nevada’s roadways and with overall fatalities at an increase in comparison to this time last year, the Nevada Highway Patrol is working in conjunction with agencies aligned with Joining Forces to boost enforcement efforts.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

Approval granted for removal of dead and dying trees in Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board on Wednesday approved an emergency permit for Caltrans to remove hazardous dying trees along its highways and rights of way in the Tahoe Basin.

California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a tree mortality emergency in October 2015 because of widespread tree die-offs after several years of severe drought. There are now an estimated 102 million dead trees in California, with the greatest tree mortality in the Southern Sierra Nevada.

Genoa Peak Fire nears containment

Update 8/24 6PM - The size of the Genoa Peak Fire on the Carson Ranger District has been updated after the GPS mapped it 5.9 acres today. The fire is 75 percet contained with 100 percent containment expected by the end of today. There are currently 31 firefighters on scene.

Westbound I-80 reopens after mudslide closes the road

Friday night update: I-80 westbound reopened at the Nevada state line.

A thunderstorm brought flash flooding on I-80, creating a mudslide that has covered some lanes. As a result, the westbound lanes near the state line just east of Farad are closed.

California Highway Patrol is holding traffic at Gold Ranch.

Crews are at the scene to clear mud but at this time there is no estimated time of opening. A detour is not provided.

First peek into Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project

The City of South Lake Tahoe is creating a new design of Sierra Boulevard that will introduce Class 1 and Class 2 bike lanes, parallel parking spots, reduced lane size and lighted sidewalks. Called the Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project, work is expected to get underway on the .6 mile stretch of road in the summer of 2018, but not everyone is happy about it.

At the first of two community information meetings on Thursday night, City and NCE representatives gave an overview of the planned project, had a question and answer period and shared preliminary designs of Sierra Blvd.

Pope Baldwin Bike Path to see closures as trees are thinned along trail

Trees will be thinned along the Pope Baldwin Bike Path off of State Route 89 north of South Lake Tahoe starting Monday, August 21. Recreationists can expect path closures for up to 30 minutes at a time as flaggers intermittently close the bike path for public safety as trees are falling.

This phase of the project will take place Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and is expected to last several weeks. Bicyclists may use the bike lane on Highway 89 to detour around the traffic control areas.

NDOT: Don’t let eclipse cast a shadow on life

Nevada Department of Transportation officials are reminding motorists to drive safely as an eclipse darkens Nevada skies on Aug. 21.

In northern Nevada, the sun will be as much as 90 percent eclipsed during mid-morning hours of Aug. 21.

Approximately 200 million people, nearly two-thirds of the country’s population, live within a day’s drive of the path of the full solar eclipse, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Opinion: Confronting climate change at Lake Tahoe

For 20 years, every August we’ve paused to reflect on our collective commitment to Lake Tahoe’s restoration at the Lake Tahoe Summit. This year, with U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein hosting the event, the issue of climate change will be front and center. Climate change poses incredible challenges for Tahoe, affecting not only the health of its famously cold, clear waters, but the health of its expansive forests and what is to become of our $5 billion outdoor recreation-based economy.

Caltrans to close freeway ramps in Truckee for maintenance work

Caltrans is alerting motorists traveling through the Truckee area that the on ramp from southbound Highway 89 to eastbound Interstate 80, as well as the off ramp from Interstate 80 to Central Truckee, will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 15 and Wednesday, August 16 for maintenance work.

The ramps sustained damage during the past winter’s storms. Preventing further erosion of the ramp’s pavement and shoulders will help mitigate damage anticipated from future winter storms.

Crash at Tahoe Keys Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe causing traffic jam

A two-car accident at Tahoe Keys BLvd. and Highway 50 has traffic jammed up through South Lake Tahoe and send two people to the hospital Friday.

One car was T-boned, their airbag was deployed and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue had to extricate the driver.

Two people were transported to Barton Hospital with mild to moderate injuries.

Both cars were being hooked up to tow trucks at 12:00 p.m. and traffic should start flowing soon.

The cause is unknown at this time and this is a developing story. More details will be released shortly.

Traffic issues at Sand Harbor causing dangerous conditions and congestion

The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) is becoming concerned with traffic issues around Sand Harbor on State Route 28 near Incline Village, especially early mornings on Saturdays and Sundays.

Drivers parking and those stopping in the middle of the road trying to park are creating backups and dangerous situations before the popular beach even opens.
On many weekend mornings the traffic is backed up all the way into Incline Village, causing major delays, and this is when there is no road construction.

Water main break near Stateline causes traffic issues

A water main broke near Lakeside Inn at Stateline Thursday, sending water onto Highway 50 and creating a traffic mess for much of the afternoon.

The right lane is still closed in the area of the break this evening.

Expect delays through the night. According to Nevada Department of Transportation, an estimated time of repair is by 8:00 a.m. Friday.

It is unknown at this time what caused the break.

El Dorado County Supervisors respond to judge's ruling on Measure E

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors today issued the following statement
about El Dorado County Superior Court Judge Warren Stracener’s decision regarding the constitutionality of Measure E, which was passed by voters in June 2016. It enacted or reinstated certain restrictions and policies concerning roads and traffic congestion, especially traffic issues related to new development:

Caltrans working on I-80 and Hwy 50 this week

Those traveling to and from Lake Tahoe this week may want to take note of traffic alerts on both Interstate 80 and Highway 50.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will be doing overnight Work to repair rough spots in the roadway Monday night through Friday morning. They will be doing grinding and paving work on U.S. Highway 50 on the section of the roadway that descends after Echo Summit into the Tahoe Basin.

Woman injured after high speed motorcycle chase in South Lake Tahoe

An attempted traffic stop in South Lake Tahoe Saturday afternoon led to a high speed chase through town that ended with a woman being injured and the suspect getting away.

At 12:35 p.m. July 29, a call came into police dispatch about a disturbance between a male and female on the side of Tahoe Keys Boulevard near the intersection with Michael Drive. The caller said it appeared the female was trying to leave the area but was being prevented by a male on a motorcycle.

Fire breaks out in mountains southwest of Reno

UPDATE 6:15 p.m.: The Whites Fire has burned 60 acres on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Carson Ranger District near the Whites Creek Trailhead. The fire, burning southwest of Reno, is threatening eight structures in the Logan Meadows area.

Traffic is closed to Timberline Drive, except for local residents. There is no access to the Thomas Creek and Whites Creek Trailheads.

Crews are responding to a new wildfire southwest of Reno off the Mount Rose Highway in the Timberline area.

New freeway connecting Lake Tahoe to Reno opens Wednesday

The trip from Lake Tahoe to Reno just got a bit shorter as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) opens the final three miles of the Interstate 580 Carson City Freeway project to traffic on Wednesday, August 2 at 10:00 a.m.

Construction on this final, southern portion of the project began in 2015.

As part of a phased opening, the new freeway ramps between Fairview Drive at the northern end of the new Carson City Freeway will open later that afternoon or on August 3.

EMERGENCY PROJECTS

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): The highway is reduced to one lane in each direction at Bridal Veil Falls for slope repair work.

State Route 193 (El Dorado County): Motorists can expect a full closure of the highway from the junction with State Route 49 in Placerville to Chili Bar from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Monday through Friday for roadwork repairs. More information: http://bit.ly/2to2pbb

Motorcyclist injured after running into car in South Lake Tahoe

A motorcyclist crashed into the back of a car in South Lake Tahoe Monday, sending its lone occupant to Barton Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., a line of traffic was stopped on Highway 50 by Grocery Outlet and Motel 6. The motorcyclist didn't notice the car in front of him was stopped and crashed into it.

The driver of the car was uninjured according to South Lake Tahoe Fire Battalion Chief Tim Spencer. He did say the classic motorcycle suffered major damage.

The hometown of the motorcyclist is unknown at this time.

Buyer has one week to close escrow on Kingsbury Middle School sale

The sale of Kingsbury Middle School to Lake Parkway LLC is still on, for now.

At a special meeting of the Douglas County School District Monday, the board voted unanimously to give the buyer until Monday, July 31 to come up with the rest of the $3.15 million purchase price for the middle school which has sat vacant since the 2008-09 school year.
