SR89 to close overnight in Meeks Bay

Caltrans is alerting motorists to a full overnight closure of a section of State Highway 89 in the Meeks Bay area on Thursday.

The highway is scheduled to be closed from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. Thursday between Meeks Bay Resort & Marina and Sugar Pine Point State Park to allow for a bridge to be installed at Northridge Drive as part of the ongoing bike path extension from the state park to the resort.

Lakeview Drive in Meeks Bay to close for repairs

El Dorado County’s Department of Transportation today announced crews will be
performing road work on Lakeview Drive on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe beginning Thursday, September 20 and continuing through Friday, October 5, 2018.

Lakeview Drive between Silvertip Drive and Saturn Drive, will be closed to
traffic for construction. The closure is necessary to ensure motorist and worker safety while the County’s contractor performs work on Lakeview Drive.

New shuttle and one-way traffic to help alleviate Apple Hill congestion

Fall in El Dorado County means several things, but on the top of many lists is a trip to Apple Hill during the month of October.

Weekend crowds are already heading to the farms, wineries and breweries from Placerville to Pollock Pines, but the thousands of cars that make the trip each week during the month of October have prompted transportation, farming, tourism, safety and County officials to work together to alleviate the weekend gridlock on area roads.

Motorcyclist suffers serious injuries after Lake Tahoe collision

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - A motorcyclist suffered serious injuries on Saturday, September 15 after colliding with a car on Highway 50 in front of Lake Village.

Traffic is now able to get by the scene on the shoulder of the road according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. The eastbound left lane is blocked as they clear the vehicle and motorcycle.

Expect delays.

According to witnesses the victim was transported by care flight.

Parts of National Forest reopen as Boot Fire nears complete containment

It has taken firefighters 10 days to contain 98 percent of the Boot Fire. The remaining open line is in the northern reaches of the fire area. Very steep slopes and thick timber made it unsafe for firefighters to work, thus delaying containment.

The fire burned 6,974 acres and at times closed US 395 between Walker and Bridgeport.

With the increased containment of the Boot Fire, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is now able to reopen some of the closed area on the Bridgeport Ranger District.

Over 150,000 rides made on Lime bikes and scooters in South Lake Tahoe

This summer has been a big one for Lime rides in South Lake Tahoe. Since they launches in May there have been over 100,000 scooter rides and over 50,000 bike rides on the popular lime green rentals. Lime started with bikes on May 21 and Scooters on June 6.

Firefighers now have a containment line around three percent of the Boot Fire as 6,873 acres have burned. Fire activity moderated yesterday with little fire growth occurring. More than 570 firefighters and numerous helicopters are making headway.

Roadwork to close two roads starting Monday: Elks Club and Waverly Drives

El Dorado County’s Department of Transportation today announced crews will be
performing road work on Elks Club Drive and Waverly Drive in Meyers beginning Monday, September 10 and continuing through Friday, September 21, 2018.

The two roads will be closed to traffic for construction. The closures are necessary to ensure motorist and worker safety while the County’s contractor performs work on Elks Club Drive.

Nevada law enforcement joining forces to emphasize importance of safe and sober driving

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is joining the Nevada Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies in the state to emphasize the importance of safe and sober driving during the Labor Day Holiday weekend and beginning of September.

The enforcement began on August 25 and ends on Monday, September 10.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will dedicate extra officers to DUI enforcement as part of a statewide JOINING FORCES campaign aimed at reducing tragedies caused by people driving under the influence.

Heading to Lake Tahoe this Labor Day weekend to celebrate the unofficial end of summer? Below are some tips and important information for residents and visitors to keep in mind for a safe and fun-filled holiday weekend.

South Lake Tahoe roadwork schedule to change after Labor Day weekend

Due to heavy traffic expected in Lake Tahoe for the Labor Day weekend, Caltrans will suspend roadwork for the holiday, but there will be big changes in their work schedule starting Tuesday, September 4.

In South Lake Tahoe, roadwork on U.S. Highway 50 from Winnemucca Avenue to Silver Dollar Avenue will be suspended starting Friday, August 31 at 8:00 a.m. and will resume on Tuesday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m.

Although Caltrans construction is not happening during Labor Day weekend, there will be heavy traffic and work zones will still be set up. Please "Be Work Zone Alert."

Getting around South Lake Tahoe by water taxi

We've all most likely had an experience hailing or calling for a cab, but how many have tried that doing that on Lake Tahoe? There are no stop signs or stop lights, it's worry free, no traffic, no parking madness, just you and the crystal blue water underneath your water taxi as it glides from marina to marina at a steady 10 knots.

On Monday I boarded the South Shore Water Shuttle at Lakeside Marina for a round trip to all four of its regular stops, Timber Cove Marina, Camp Richardson Resort & Marina and Round Hill Pines Beach Resort & Marina, and then back to Lakeside.

Vehicle crashes into tree and rolls over near Skyland in Lake Tahoe

A driver sustained minor injuries in a crash north of Zephyr Cove near Skyland Monday afternoon.

Just before 4:00 p.m., an unidentified adult woman traveling in a southwesterly direction drove her car off Highway 50 and into a tree where the car subsequently rolled over.

The woman suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment, according to Trooper Matt McLaughlin of the Nevada Highway Patrol. He said she got a ride home as her car is undriveable.

Highway 50 was backed up with traffic for about an hour as emergency crews worked at the scene.

Motorhome leads law enforcement on chase from South Lake Tahoe to Gardnerville

A motorhome being driven recklessly through South Lake Tahoe and Stateline led law enforcement on a high-speed ride along Highway 50, over Spooner Summit and into the Carson Valley before it crashed into a building in Gardnerville, Nev.

At 10:30 p.m. Sunday, August 26, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) was alerted about the 1997 Airstream motorhome speeding through South Lake Tahoe, running red lights and traveling without headlamps on. They saw it as it crossed into Nevada traveling 55 mph in a 35-mph zone when an enforcement stop was initiated.

NHP and CHP participate in "I-80 Challenge" to target reckless and distracted drivers

The California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Valley Division and Golden Gate Divisions, having jurisdiction over the Sacramento regions and San Francisco Bay Area, are partnering with the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) to participate in an “I-80 Challenge.”

This effort aims to reduce distracted and reckless driving along the 615 miles of Interstate 80 from San Francisco, Calif. to the Nevada/Utah Stateline from Monday, August 27 – Labor Day, September 3, 2018, by enhancing traffic safety, enforcement, and education along this section of the National Highway System.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested in Carson City for alleged 3rd DUI

A 52-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested in the area of North Curry and West Spear streets for felony suspicion of third DUI, driving on a revoked license, and following too close, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Ragan Allen Stacey was arrested after deputies responded to a two vehicle crash Saturday evening. Dispatch advised the driver of one of the vehicles was walking away from the crash, and deputies were able to locate him on North Curry Street.

Cave Rock barriers come down as construction project nears end

The project to stabilize the roadside slope near Cave Rock has been substantially completed, enough so that most of the lane reduction barriers have been removed. Crews Wednesday were smoothing new asphalt. Motorists should anticipate intermittent roadway shoulder and lane closures over coming weeks for final construction clean up.

Local man dies in South Lake Tahoe motorcycle vs. truck crash

4:13 p.m. UPDATE: The driver of the truck involved in Thursday's fatal crash is a 63-year-old male from South Lake Tahoe. As investigators worked at the scene, Lake Tahoe Boulevard was closed to all traffic for about 2.5 hours from Takela Drive to Fairway Avenue.

"South Lake Tahoe Police Department appreciates the public’s patience during the closure/detour," said Lt. David Stevenson. "The Police Department would also like to thank CHP and Cal Trans for assisting with traffic control. We would also like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased."

NHp traffic stop leads to seizure of almost 280 pounds of illegal drugs

A traffic stop led to the seizure of 135.36 pounds of Cocaine an 144.27 pounds of Methamphetamine and two arrests in White Pine County on July 19.

A Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) trooper was on US93 at 9:04 p.m. when he pull over a commercial vehicle for speeding. During the stop, the trooper identified signs of criminal activity. The trooper then applied for, and was granted, a search warrant for the vehicle through the Ely Justice Court.

The drugs were found in the sleeper berth of the vehicle.

Ribbon cutting ceremony welcomes Chariot to the community

Chariot, the new microtransit service in South Lake Tahoe, was officially welcomed to the community Tuesday during a Tahoe Chamber ribbon cutting ceremony with representatives from the League to Save Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, the City of South Lake Tahoe and chamber members.

USFS road in South Lake Tahoe closed for bridge work

Construction is now underway on Forest Service Road 1202, known as Fountain Place Road, to replace the existing six foot culvert with a 30-foot bridge nd improve access by removing trees, patching asphalt, constructing infiltration basins and installing an 18-inch culvert.

The road is closed to vehicle traffic at Saxon Creek. There is a detour available for bicycles and pedestrians but no vehicles are allowed until the project is finished. The upper section of the road may be accessed from Powerline Road (12N08) to Saxon Tie Road (12N17).

Bike challenge week riders pedal 11,215 miles and save $2,493 in gas purchases

During the first two weeks of June, participants in the 13th annual Lake Tahoe Bike Challenge traveled 11,215 miles on foot or on bicycle, burning an estimated 482,245 calories and preventing an estimated 12,105 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and $2,493 in gasoline purchases.

Organized by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition, the basin-wide Bike Challenge is a friendly competition to see what individuals and teams can rack up the most trips and miles by biking, walking, or taking transit instead of driving cars.

Sacramento man suffers major injuries after going off road near Twin Bridges

A 38-year-old man from Sacramento, California is in Renown Medical Center this afternoon after suffering major injuries after going off US50 east of Slippery Ford Road near Twin Bridges at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2018.

The unidentified man was driving his vehicle on eastbound US50, east of Slippery Ford Road at an unsafe speed according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Due to his high rate of speed speed in the curvy section of the road he could not maintain his position within the traffic lane and lost control.

New plan for State Route 89 being developed to alleviate traffic, improve access

A collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations are working on what is being called the 'SR 89 Recreation Management Plan,' which covers the stretch from 15th street in South Lake Tahoe to the Placer County line at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Along the plan area are popular areas to view scenery, hike, bike and visit beaches along a 12 mile stretch of undeveloped shoreline. Some residential neighborhoods also rest along this area.

Chariot microtransit system arrives in South lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Your chariot has arrived!

The League to Save Lake Tahoe has teamed with Chariot to bring a new microtransit service to the South Shore starting on Monday, July 9. They will use the busy summer traffic-congested tourist area to test a solution for transportation issues around the lake.

Gardnerville man arrested on charges related to fatal car crash in Carson City

Omar Adan Oronia-Camacho has been arrested in connected of a crash in Carson City that claimed the life of a woman on January 6, 2018.

Since the date of the crash, the Nevada Highway Patrol Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.) has been working on the investigation.

Lake Tahoe area roadwork July 1 - 7

The 4th of July is not only a fun holiday, but it is a very busy one in Lake Tahoe. Due to heavy holiday traffic, Caltrans will suspend their roadwork projects at the lake.

Roadwork on U.S. Highway 50 from the "Y" intersection to the Trout Creek Bridge will be suspended starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 3. The regular weekly construction schedule will resume at 9 p.m. Thursday, July 5.

Although construction will be suspended for the holiday, there will be heavy traffic and work zones will still be set up. Please "Be Work Zone Alert."

Rolling road closure for South Lake Tahoe 4th of July parade

The annual 4th of July Parade in South Lake Tahoe will go from Ski Run Boulevard to Bijou Community Park starting at 10:00 a.m Wednesday, and motorists need to be aware of some changes and possible delays.

DUI checkpoint in South Lake Tahoe Saturday

On Saturday, June 30, 2018, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), South Lake Tahoe Area, will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in the east area of El Dorado County. The checkpoint will be setting up at approximately 8:00 p.m. and will be operational at 9:00 p.m. The checkpoint will conclude at approximately 2:00 a.m.

It is unknown where it will be set up but could be anywhere from Meyers to the state line. Designate a sober driver if you plan to go out and drink.

USFS offers safety tips, provides alcohol ban and parking info, and wishes all a Happy 4th!

The Fourth of July holiday period is upon us and signifies the busiest time of year in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) asks residents and visitors to keep the following tips in mind to help everyone enjoy a safe and fun holiday.

To promote public safety, the annual alcohol ban will be in effect at the following locations:

· Nevada Beach on July 4, from 6 a.m. until midnight.

Marine Marching Band to be in South Lake Tahoe 4th of July parade

The City of South Lake Tahoe is honored to announce the Marine Band San Diego Marching Band will be in the 4th of July Parade on Wednesday, July 4th at 10:00 a.m. The parade will be immediately followed by a celebratory BBQ benefiting local American Legion Post 795 and performances by the Marine Band San Diego. The BBQ and performances will be held at Bijou Community Park located at 1201 Al Tahoe Blvd.

You can't miss them. A person buzzing down the road or bike path on a lime green electric scooter, courtesy of the newest and hottest trend, scooter sharing. In South Lake Tahoe, Lime Bike introduced the scooters a few weeks ago, and since then the popularity has increased daily.

Your Chariot awaits ....new micro-transit system headed to South Lake Tahoe

In an effort to keep cars off the road, a key to increasing the clarity of Lake Tahoe, a new micro-transit system is heading to South Lake Tahoe.

Chariot, a shuttle company based in San Francisco, is coming to town for a three month trial run starting in just a few weeks.

"Chariot will be more responsive than traditional transportation," Jesse Patterson, Deputy Director of the League to Save Lake Tahoe, told South Tahoe Now. "We'll get Chariot here and get people on board, then see if it works."
