Tahoe Fund Presents $10,000 Check for Nevada’s Highest Priority Restoration Project

The environmental non-profit Tahoe Fund presented a $10,000 check today to the Nevada interagency team responsible for implementing thestate’s highest priority Lake Tahoe restoration project, the Third Creek and Incline Creek watershed project. The grant finances a pedestrian bridge over Incline Creek to provide a recreational amenity in the heart of Incline Village and support the Environmental Improvement Program to improve lake clarity and recreational opportunities in the Tahoe Basin.

Recommendations Regarding 'Economic Revitalization' for South Shore Lake Tahoe

After attending the State of the South Shore Economy Public Forum held on October 23rd, 2012 I was inspired to draft a response to the questions about economic revitalization that were asked at the meeting. I feel like our group had many salient ideas that were not properly represented. Also, I have noticed that people are quick to offer ideas like “reduce unemployment”, “beautify the city”, and “improve recreation”, but they are typically unable to offer suggestions on how to make those ideas a reality.

Workshop on Wednesday for proposed South Shore Lake Tahoe Highway 50 revitalization project

The Tahoe Transportation District will host its second public workshop to discuss the US 50, Lake Tahoe South Shore Community Revitalization project, Wednesday, November 7, at Embassy Suites from 1-3 p.m.

The Lake Tahoe workshop will provide background on the project, outline goals and solicit input from individuals throughout the community. The open house format allows for members of the community to participant in the workshop anytime between workshop hours.

Community workshops for US/50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project

Two US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project workshops are planned in the coming days. The first will be Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 5-7 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Community College, Aspen Room. Another meeting is planned for Nov. 7 from 1-3 p.m. at Embassy Suites Lake Tahoe, Tallac Ballroom.
The South Shore Community Revitalization Projection is being considered to promote increased safety, efficient traffic flow and environmental and visual improvements along Highway 50. For more information go here.

Genoa Station Bar and Grill fire contained to kitchen and attic; S.R. 206 closed for two hours

Arson has been ruled out but an investigation is ongoing after a fire Friday morning at the Genoa Station Grill and Bar adjacent to the Genoa Town Hall.
Douglas County Dispatch received a 911 call of a structure fire at the Genoa Station Grill and Bar, which is a newer business adjacent to the Genoa Town Hall. East Fork Fire and Paramedic District along with Douglas County Sheriff’s Department and the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to the scene, said DCSO Sgt. Pat Brooks.

Mike Love Talks Environment at Lake Tahoe Roundabout Opening

In a symbolic gesture to Lake Tahoe's first roundabout, Beach Boy Mike Love and local dignitaries celebrated how locals and visitors can "Get Around" North Shore's intersection of Mount Rose Highway and State Route 28 at the dedication, Oct. 17.

“For these past 50 years you could say that I ‘Get Around,’ laughed Mike Love, lead singer and co-owner of the Beach Boys. “With the music I created along with the other Beach Boys it has taken me all over the world. If you ask me it’s pretty cool that thanks to the efforts of a whole lot of good people I get a Roundabout – it’s beautiful.”

Pilot in fatal August airplane crash reported fuel and air problems after landing at Lake Tahoe Airport

The airplane that crashed after takeoff from Lake Tahoe Airport on August 25 in which five people died may have experienced problems with a fuel and air mixture — after landing earlier in the day at the airport, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board.

Six-week Asian clam control project begins at Emerald Bay

Boaters heading to Lake Tahoe in the next six weeks may experience a short delay when entering Emerald Bay due to an Asian clam control project that will be taking place there.
The Asian clam control project is being implemented by a team of partners from the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program, with plans to treat an area of up to 5 acres at the mouth of Emerald Bay. Treatment will be accomplished by covering the infested lake bottom with thin rubber barriers, augmented with organic material, that reduce the available oxygen and smother the clams. It will be the largest project of its type in the history of Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe road woes near close

Road construction that has backed up traffic and hurt businesses along Lake Tahoe Boulevard this summer is expected to conclude this month. Caltrans spokeswoman Deanna Shoopman said contractor Disney Construction should have paving work completed on the Trout Creek to Ski Run Boulevard project in South Lake Tahoe within two weeks.

Highway 395 re-opened after fire burns more than 2,000 acres south of Gardnerville

UPDATE 8:45AM: Highway 395 has reopened with controls (pilot vehicle) so expect delays and watch for fire vehicles, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and Police Department responded to a fire at Pioneer Trail and April Drive on the evening of September 18th. Upon arrival, they saw that two homes were fully engulfed with nearby trees also on fire.

Well known South Lake Tahoe artist Peter Darvas injured in Pioneer Trail fire

Well-known South Shore Lake Tahoe artist Peter Darvas was being treated at Barton Memorial Hospital on Tuesday evening after he tried putting out a house fire on Pioneer Trail.

Authorities said the fire, reported shortly before 6 p.m., was at the corner of Edna and Pioneer Trail. Darvas’ home, according to city records, is at 3128 Pioneer Trail – at that corner.

According to a message from City Manager Nancy Kerry to Councilman Tom Davis, Darvas was in the house and tried to put the fire out. He was being treated at Barton Memorial Hospital.

At least two homes destroyed, one hurt in South Lake Tahoe fire off of Pioneer Trail

10:51PM: Peter Darvas, the South Lake Tahoe artist whose home burned in the fire off of Pioneer Trail on Tuesday, was listed in fair condition at Barton Memorial Hospital on Tuesday night, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Boat Inspections at Lake Tahoe move to fall and winter ramp schedules

Following a stellar boating season at Lake Tahoe, this Thursday, Sept. 20 will be the last day of operations for the Northstar and Homewood boat inspection stations. Boat inspections and decontaminations will still be available at the Alpine, Spooner and Meyers stations until Sept. 30, 2012.

Four dead in two overnight accidents in Douglas County on Highway 395

Four people are dead in two overnight accidents, believed to be alcohol related, on Highway 395 in Douglas County, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
The accidents happened within a few hours of each other. The first accident, in which three people died, was reported at 11:54 p.m. Saturday night near Leviathan Mine Road on Highway 395.

Woman hit by SUV on Highway 50 near Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe

A woman was hit by a SUV near the crosswalk across from McP's Pub on Highway 50 near Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe late Saturday night. A CareFlight air ambulance was called and the woman was to be taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno.
At the time paramedics arrived to the accident the woman was breathing but unresponsive, unconscious, with blood coming from her neck and head area. The accident was reported at 11:45 p.m.

Forest Service resumes work on Pope-Baldwin Bike Path

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will resume work on the Pope-Baldwin Bike Path the week of Sept. 17. The path is located near the south end of Lake Tahoe and runs along Highway 89 for about three miles.
The path will be seal-coated beginning on the west end near Spring Creek. For safety reasons, sections of the path will be closed at times to pedestrian/bike traffic. Work is expected to last about a week.

South Lake Tahoe police arrest man on felony charges; stolen Lexus, wristwatch recovered

A 25-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested and faces felony burglary and drug charges after a chase Monday that went from South Lake Tahoe across the state line.
Deonte Brown is suspected of stealing, among other things, a 2002 Lexus convertible from a Zephyr Cove home, South Lake Tahoe authorities said. He was booked into Douglas County Jail.

Fatal motorcycle accidents at Highway 50 and Mount Rose Highway near Lake Tahoe ties up homebound holiday traffic

UPDATE: 5:18PM: A female passenger on a motorcycle died this Labor Day and the driver was seriously injured on Highway 50 near Glenbrook, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. In a separate accident on Mount Rose Highway a motorcyclist has also died.
The Highway 50 accident, reported at 3:13 Monday afternoon near Logan Creek on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe, shut down traffic in the eastbound lane. Traffic, as of 5 p.m. continued to be diverted to the westbound lane, said NHP Trooper Barbara Stapleton.

Pedestrian hit by vehicle near Pioneer, Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Echo Road

A pedestrian was hit by a car near Pioneer Trail and Lake Tahoe Boulevard at around 11 p.m. Sunday night, tying up traffic at the intersection. Early reports were that the man had no visible injuries according to South Lake Tahoe EMTs on the scene. The man, said to be elderly, was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital. Traffic was diverted to Echo Road.

Paramedics respond to motorcycle accident at Highway 50 and Lodi in South Lake Tahoe

UPDATE 1:55PM: The westbound lane of Highway 50 has been reopened following a motorcycle accident that sent two to the hospital. Traffic is reportedly backed up from Stateline to the Y this afternoon. The accident was reported at 12:17 this afternoon. One victim was transported by air ambulance. A second victim was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital, according to Lake Tahoe News.

South Lake Tahoe paramedics have responded to Highway 50 and Lodi this afternoon following a motorcycle accident. The victim in the accident will apparently be transported by Calstar air ambulance to Renown Medical Center in Reno. The accident was reported at 12:17 as a collision with a vehicle. Traffic along Highway 50 is being rerouted. The victim was to be transported by ground ambulance to a helicopter landing site near Sierra Boulevard. It is unknown about the condition of the driver of the vehicle. Unconfirmed reports are that the driver was being taken to the South Lake Tahoe police station.

South Lake Tahoe Police provide details after car slams into cyclist, gas station

UPDATE 1:39PM: South Lake Tahoe Police have issued a press release regarding Tuesday's hit and run accident. The victim, a 38-year-old man, remains in an intensive care unit at Renown Medical Center in Reno. South Lake Tahoe Police have commended citizens for their part in locating the suspect.

Accident ties up eastbound lane of Highway 50 at Glenbrook

A two-vehicle accident Monday afternoon has tied up traffic on Highway 50 at Glenbrook. As of 4:27 p.m. the eastbound lane was closed and traffic was being pushed around to the westbound lane. One person reportedly suffered injuries to their foot. Moderate to major damage to vehicles was reported and airbags were deployed. Three other people were said to be uninjured. The accident was reported at 4:18 p.m.

Yes, they did! And, they did it in record-setting style.
Four athletes, who are personal friends of Elaine and I, completed 10 very physically and mentally-demanding challenges in a period of 10 grueling days, way back in 2002.
I know because we were there for each and every one of those 10 memorable days that resulted in the very first Nevada 10-in-10 Challenge going into the Nevada record book.
Those four were Karl Horeis, Jeremy Evans, Rick Gunn and K. M. Cannon.

Man dies after being hit by vehicle on Lake Tahoe Boulevard near Pioneer Trail

UPDATE 3PM: South Lake Tahoe authorities say a 49-year-old man dressed in dark clothes was struck and killed by a van after attempting to cross Lake Tahoe Boulevard outside of the crosswalk.
More details have been released by South Lake Tahoe Police Department regarding Tuesday night's fatal accident that shut down Lake Tahoe Boulevard / Highway 50 from Pioneer Trail to Midway for about three hours. The driver of the van that hit the pedestrian has been cleared of any wrong-doing, according to Sgt. Brad Williams. The investigation is continuing and the identity of the pedestrian is being withheld pending notification of family members.

Update: 4 Motorists Killed, 3 Injured in Three-Vehicle Crash on US 50 in Lyon County

The names of the four people killed in a fiery crash Tuesday on Highway 50 near Dayton in Lyon County may be released on Wednesday, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. The accident happened shortly before 9:00 a.m. east of Dayton and involved two pickups and a one-ton truck each towing a trailer with two transporting cattle. The four who died and the three injured are all believed to be from Northern Nevada.

Gas leak plugged, evacuation lifted in South Lake Tahoe

UPDATE 10:57 AM: South Lake Tahoe Fire Department issued the following press release regarding Monday night's gas leak, which was reportedly caused by a backhoe that severed a natural gas line. The leak forced the closure of Highway 50 between Fairway Avenue and Herbert Avenue from 11 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. No injuries were reported. Here is the press statement:

Motorists can expect delays on Highway 89 from Tahoe City to Tahoma

Motorists traveling Highway 89 on the west shore of Lake Tahoe can expect around-the-clock construction work this week between Tahoe City and Tahoma, according to Caltrans.
Motorists will likely come upon one-way traffic control restrictions and up to 10 minute delays beginning at 7 a.m. Monday and continuing through 10 a.m. Friday. Southwest Gas Corporation of Carson City, Nev. is scheduled to do utility work. The schedule is subject to change at the contractors discretion. South Lake Tahoe Police Explorers Win Tracy, Calif. Competition

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department’s Explorer Post traveled to Tracy, Calif., during the weekend of July 13 to 15 to participate in the 2012 Central Valley Explorer Competition. If the TTD took the $70 Million that they say it will cost to build the loop road and fix up the area they would still have enough over to give us a free bus system like most of the other resort towns. Motorcycle accident reported at Cave Rock, air ambulance responds

A motorcycle accident with injuries has tied up traffic on Highway 50 near Cave Rock this afternoon, according to Douglas County fire and paramedics on the scene.
At least two people have reportedly been injured. One person was to be transported by air ambulance and the other by ground ambulance, according to dispatch.
The accident was reported at 3:54 p.m.

Accident at Elks Point Road and Highway 50 at South Shore Lake Tahoe sends one to the hospital

A mishap at a traffic light near Elks Point Road and Highway 50 sent a Lake Tahoe man to the hospital on Saturday morning, the Nevada Highway patrol reports. The injuries are non-life threatening.
