Being gay and a high school student in South Lake Tahoe in 2005 was challenging.

"It was a scary, dark place at the time," said Alex Boyar, who 'came out of the closet' at age 14. "Its a much different environment today."

Boyar, along with his mother Dr. Virginia Berry and sister Christina Boyar, stopped by South Tahoe High Thursday to talk to the students of Ally, the Gay-Straight Alliance Club at the school that he co-founded in 2005.

The deadline is rapidly approaching for locals to apply for 19 open positions on City of South Lake Tahoe commissions and boards.

Two year appointments are now being accepted for Airport Land Use Commission, Building/ADA Board of Appeals, Parks & Recreation Commission and Planning Commission.

Completed applications must be returned to the City Clerk’s Office no later than 5:00 p.m., on Friday, December 30, 2016. The City Council will be making the appointments at a regularly scheduled meeting in January 2017 (to be announced).

Rob Lake has performed his illusion shows all over the world, and now he'll be bringing his show over the holidays to the South Shore Room at Harrah's Tahoe from December 22 to January 7.

The 33-year-old Norman, Oklahoma native told South Tahoe Now he's never been to Lake Tahoe before.

"I'm really, really exited," said Lake.

Lake caught the magic bug as a 10-year-old when he saw a magic show with his family. "I knew immediately then and there I was going to be a magician," he said. Lake said most of his training comes from the school and public libraries.

The public is invited to see the proposed plans for the new athletic facility for Whittell High School at the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Center on Tuesday, December 12 at 3:30 p.m. during a meeting of the Douglas County School Board.

Lisa Maloff donated $3 million to put in a new football field, six-lane track and new concession building at the high school on Warrior Way in Zephyr Cove, Nev.

Plans created by RO Anderson Engineering will be unveiled during a presentation at the board meeting.

Enjoy the beauty of Christmas lights but hate the hassle of untangling cords, climbing ladders and replacing bulbs? A new Lake Tahoe business is in town to relieve you of those duties, and they store them until next year too!

Tahoe Lights is the brainchild of Savannah Jackson. She had five successful seasons in Mammoth Lakes and wanted to expand her magic to the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The team of highly skilled volunteers that make up the Douglas County Search and Rescue (DCSAR) team recently had a training day that included a segment with Care Flight.

They trained on several different topics and search functions including emergency locater transmitter (ELT) search, dealing with multi-casualty patients from a mock vehicle roll over, patient packaging and loading of a patient onto Care Flight.

The segment from Care Flight personnel also gave instruction on the safety aspects of working with helicopters in their search and rescue operation.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless will soon be opening their Warm Room for a second winter and they are seeking volunteers to help staff it. Last winter they provided 1,820 room nights to 107 different guests over the 102 nights they were open.

A volunteer training will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Unity at the Lake located at 1195 Rufus Allen Blvd in South Lake Tahoe. To volunteer, training is mandatory as well as a background check.

The location of this year's Warm Room has not been announced though organizers say a contract is ready to be signed.

With a record number of local residents recently vying for two open City Council positions, many are hoping there is a renewed interest in filling vacancies on four city commission and board spots as well.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is looking for residents to fill 19 city commission and board positions on the Planning Commission, Recreation Commission, Airport Land Use Commission and the Building/ADA Board of Appeals. Applications are being accepted until the deadline of December 2, 2016.

PLANNING COMMISSION:

The monthly meeting of the South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission on November 10 will have four major projects to consider, along with hearing an appeal of a vacation rental permit denial.

Pipe Keepers is a citizen science program to address the threat of stormwater pollution entering Lake Tahoe. Runoff from rain storms and snowmelt is the largest source of pollution that degrades Lake clarity. League staff will train you to survey local neighborhoods and collect stormwater samples during rain and snowmelt events. More info at keeptahoeblue.org/events.

Adults looking to get their high school equivalency, take workforce readiness classes, or explore individualized career and educational pathway planning are invited to attend an informational session at Lake Tahoe Community College on November 9.

LTCC’s Adult Education Consortium, called ADVANCE, is establishing a solid network of providers, services, and industry partners throughout the South Tahoe and Alpine communities to ensure adults have access to a broad range of opportunities to help them “learn, earn, and grow” in their education, career and community.

This week's Pet of the Week is Delano, a very active one-year-old poodle mix. He needs a busy home, and does need some training classes.
