Submitted by Editor on Mon, 01/07/2013 - 2:13amGetting to North Lake Tahoe’s snowy ski slopes just got a whole lot easier with the launch of the region's first area-wide free ski shuttle serving North Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Donner Summit.
The service runs between area lodging properties to 9 different ski resorts on weekends and holiday weeks now through March 31. It was formed through a collaboration of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association in partnership with the Truckee/North Tahoe Transportation Management Association and Placer County, the town of Truckee and several ski resorts.

Lake Tahoe Basin snowpack at 161 percent average
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 01/01/2013 - 7:14amThe new year arrives with mountain conditions far different than a year ago, with the all-important snowpack that provides the bulk of water supplies for western Nevada at near twice-normal levels.
On Monday, the Truckee River Basin’s snowpack was measured at 192 percent of normal for the date, with the Lake Tahoe Basin at 161 percent. That’s compared to 18 and 11 percent for those two places as recorded on Dec. 31, 2011.

The Lake Tahoe record for Mackinaw Trout is a 37-pound, 6-ounce (44 inches in length) trophy caught by Robert Aronsen, way back in 1974. To date, only a handful of Macks have been caught that have weighed 30 pounds or more.

The National Weather Service in Reno reports visibility could drop below one mile with a few areas of dense fog and visibility below 1/4 of a mile early Thursday morning. Fog will begin to burn off after 8 a.m., and may linger in a few valleys until 11 a.m.

Lake Tahoe under Winter Storm Warning as storm blows into region

Snow levels are rapidly dropping as cold air associated with this latest storm drops into the basin.
Snow is expected below 7,000 feet this morning with periods of heavy snow in the afternoon. Snow accumulations of 10 to 16 inches are expected above 7,000 feet with 4 to 8 inches at lake level. At least two feet is expected above 8,000 feet.
