Free admission to the 25th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show in South Lake Tahoe

Air show officials have decided to drop the $10 entrance fee and offer free admission to all attendees for the 25th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show this Saturday, September 20th from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. at Tahoe Valley Airport in South Lake Tahoe.

Last year's air show was canceled due to heavy smoke from the Rim Fire. Officials are monitoring the King Fire's smoke and movement, but at this time there are no flight closures and the aerial performances and all on ground activities are still going to occur.

The 25th annual Lake in the Sky Air Show at Lake Tahoe Airport in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, California is scheduled for this Saturday, September 20, 2014. The Lake in the Sky Air Show has been described as “the best in the west” by one of its many professional aerial participants.

This year’s show which will includes:

Aerial Performances by Jon Melby, Bill Cornick, Spencer Suderman and Carl Liepold
Static Displays
Two World War II aircraft will be on display and will do a Fly-By during the Show. The aircraft are the F6F Hellcat and The Japanese Zero
the Cash Only Band

September is Membership Month, and the Tahoe Regional Young Professionals (TRYP) has a busy month ahead with lots of great events, mixers, and ways to get involved in the community.

Lake Valley Fire Department gets $26,000 grant for forest health in Meyers

The Lake Valley Fire Department was given a $26,000 grant to clear brush and hazard trees from a 6.5 acre parcel in Meyers. The grant was given by the Forest Service to help reduce the risk of wildfire in Meyers.

The parcel is owned by the California Tahoe Conservancy across from the Tahoe Pine Campground.

South Tahoe Boys Soccer have mixed results in Truckee

On Tuesday September 9th, South Tahoe High Schools JV and Varsity team visited Truckee, the defending champion.

The South Tahoe Vikings JV team had a huge win, beating Truckee 5-0 , Nacho Vasquez opened the score with a impressive volley that passed the goalkeeper. Brandon Estrada scored 3 goals to make it 4-0 and a late goal by Luis Munoz wrapped up the scoring for the afternoon.

The Varsity team didn't fare as well as they lost to Truckee, 4-1. The loan goal was scored by Michal Lis early in the game. Lis just moved to South Lake Tahoe from Poland.

Ceremony to be held for completion of South Lake Tahoe Bike Trail rehabilitation project

Bike trails in South Lake Tahoe received rehabilitation this summer with $250,000 of funds from Measure R. Trails inside city limits received new paving and are open and ready to ride. Planned restoration of the trails over bridges at Trout Creek and Upper Truckee Meadow are not completed yet and expected to be done this fall.

Lake Tahoe native mussels being relocated in order to protect species

Quagga mussels have been getting all the press lately but today it was the river mussel's turn for notoriety.

Native to the western U.S., the river mussel is now a protected species due to their population being threatened by dams, habitat modification due to the disappearance of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout from the Upper Truckee and other river habitat changing occurrences.

Over 1,200 people attend Sample the Sierra in South Lake Tahoe

With blue skies and warm temperatures, many people were out enjoying everything there is to do in South Lake Tahoe this holiday weekend. Many events from a carnival to fireworks were held, giving people plenty to choose from.

One of these events was the 5th Annual Sample the Sierra Farm to Fork Festival. The main event was held at Bijou Community park on Sunday, with over 1,200 people enjoying food and drink from the region. There were 16 booths of local food, wine, beer and spirits as well as an artisan marketplace, live music and a cooking contest with a mystery box of ingredients.

Sample the Sierra announces pairings of food and wine for Sunday's event

First Tees & Tastings Golf Tournament at Northstar at Tahoe

Northstar California Resort invites golfers and foodies alike to compete in the first annual Tees and Tastings tournament Thursday, August 28. The tournament will feature a two-game, nine-hole tournament with four beer and cuisine pairings throughout the front green of the Northstar Golf Course. New bikeways map released by Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coaltion

Locals and visitors alike enjoy riding bike in Lake Tahoe on a daily basis, and there is now a new tool for cyclists to use: a newly updated bicycle trail map showing all of the trails on the North and South shores.

With the addition of new trails around the basin, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition (LTBC) found it necessary to update the Lake Tahoe Bikeways Map. The newest stretch of trail from Fallen Leaf Lake to Baldwin Beach didn't make the printing deadline according to Ty Polastri, LTBC Project Director.

Women As Change Makers: Leading and Thriving in the 21st Century

Water issue expert to speak in Lake Tahoe

The Sierra Business Council is hosting Peak Innovation, a conference for Lake Tahoe locals, small business owners, communities and local governments. During the conference, Dr. Peter Gleick, an expert in water issues especially in the context of economic and environmental justice, will be at the conference which takes place October 8-10 in Tahoe City. In a National Geographic science blog, Gleick recently repeated the common question, “Why, if the California drought is so bad, has the response been so tepid?”

New signs installed along Lake Tahoe's Nevada entrances

People coming into the basin to attend the annual Lake Tahoe Summit on Tuesday will find new signs on the three Nevada entrances: Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207), Spooner Summit (U.S. Highway 50) and the Mt. Rose Highway (State Route 431).

The signs read, “Entering the Lake Tahoe Watershed — Help Protect It!” They were put up to remind everyone passing by them that Lake Tahoe is a special place that needs protecting by everyone coming to visit (and those who are already here).

Sand Harbor concert celebrates peace with music from around the globe

5th Annual Peaks & Paws to raise money for Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe

If you're ready for a day of fun in the sun with music, entertainment, beer, wine and dog-centered activities, then the 5th annual Peaks & Paws Festival is for you. This event is one of Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe's biggest fundraiser of the year. It will be held on Saturday, August 23 at the Village at Squaw Valley from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Leashed canine companions are welcome to attend.

Volunteers remove 100 gallons of invasive Milfoil from Lake Tahoe

100 gallons of invasive Eurasian Watermilfoil were removed from the Upper Truckee River by 14 League to Save Lake Tahoe volunteers on August 5.

The volunteers worked on the 1,000 foot stretch of the river near the Tahoe Keys Marina. This infestation was the first to be identified and removed by trained Eyes on the Lake volunteers. It was also the first confirmed new infestation discovered at Lake Tahoe in several years. A follow-up volunteer effort will take place later this month to ensure the infestation is completely gone.

Dogs allowed back into the Upper Truckee Marsh on August 1st

From May 1 through July 31 each year, dogs are kept out of the Upper Truckee Marsh in order to protect wildlife such as the Yellow Headed Blackbird during their critical breeding season.

Leashed dogs are allowed back into the marsh starting on Friday, August 1.

The California Tahoe Conservancy owns and manages the 600 acre marsh, one of the largest remaining in the Sierra Nevada, for the protection and enhancement of wildlife habitat and water quality.

Bike trails in South Lake Tahoe getting $725,000 facelift

Class 1 bike trails on the south shore are undergoing a month long rehabilitation project which includes new pavement, striping, two new bridge deckings and new signage.

2.6 miles of existing trails that were installed over 20 years ago are seeing new life thanks to a $250,000 contribution through Measure R funds and $475,452 grant funding through Caltrans Bicycle Transportation Authority.

Forest fuels project in South Lake Tahoe to continue

Thinning of trees for fuels reduction and forest health will continue next week on approximately 170 acres of National Forest System lands on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe.

Beginning Monday, July 28, 2014, thinning will take place off of North Upper Truckee Road near West San Bernardino Avenue, Pioneer Trail northwest of forest road 12N08 (Powerline), Pioneer Trail southwest of Columbine Trail and on some urban lots in the Tahoe Island Drive area near 15th Street. Thinning operations in these locations may vary over the next several weeks.

Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic Brings Out the Stars July 13-14

NFL Hall of Fame members Marcus Allen and Mike Haynes will join Cy Young winner Vida Blue and other sports stars at the 6th Annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic at Gray's Crossing in Truckee July 13 to 14.

The tournament is held to pay tribute to Hall of Famer and former Oakland Raider and Lake Tahoe resident Gene Upshaw and raise funds for cancer programs and traumatic brain injuries. Upshaw golfed often at the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe before his sudden death from pancreatic cancer in 2008, just 3 days after being diagnosed.

"Where is the Gold?" produced by the Brewery Arts Center will entertain with plenty of Comstock legend and lore intertwined with spellbinding whodunit mystery. The audience will be invited to help the cast of characters solve the mystery of who stole the gold, and who is responsible for the death of Mr. Big.

Forest Service and South Lake Tahoe Police Urge Safety for 4th of July

The busy 4th of July holiday is just a week away, and with Lake Tahoe's increased crowds, excess traffic, fireworks and dry conditions, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) are asking everyone to use caution.

Late Night Runners in South Lake Tahoe for Reno-Tahoe Odyssey

Runners with lights and reflective gear ran through South Lake Tahoe Friday night as part of the 10th Annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey relay race. Drivers in town might have seen the blinking arrows, informing runners of the route. Others in town reported seeing the bonfires and groups of people stationed where runners were changed. The Beachcomber Inn housed one team for a quick nap and shower before they headed to the finish.

Cold Water Challenges Going Viral in South Lake Tahoe

The Cold Water Challenge. Unless you're still in hibernation you've probably heard of someone in South Lake Tahoe taking the Cold Water Challenge.

But What is it?

Someone takes a video of themselves jumping into a body of cold water (such as Lake Tahoe, the Truckee River or Trout Creek). Once they emerge from the water they record themselves saying the names of people they are challenging to jump in cold water as well, and within 24 hours.

2015 Alpine Ski Team Full of Lake Tahoe Athletes

PARK CITY, UT (May 7) – Olympic gold medalists Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO), Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) and Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) are among the 40 athletes nominated to the 2015 U.S. Alpine Ski Team. The team will formally named in the fall during Nature Valley First Tracks at Copper Mountain, CO – home of the U.S. Ski Team Speed Center.

Fallen Leaf Project to Improve Trail Access

Work will start as early as May 5th on the Forest Service's Fallen Leaf Trail Project. The project will improve the trail system by improving access to popular destinations and reducing congestion and user conflict.

The first phase will be worked on this spring and summer. The result will be a new bike path from Fallen Leaf Lake Campground to the Pope Baldwin Bike Path.

SLT DMV Reschedules Remodeling; Closing For Two Days

The South Lake Tahoe office of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) was scheduled to close last month for renovations, but due to stormy weather they postponed the project. The DMV announced today that they will be closing the office for two days in May to replace the carpet.

They are alerting local customers that their office, located at 3344 Lake Tahoe Blvd #B, will be closing for renovations on Friday, May 9, 2014, at 12 p.m.

Lake Tahoe Area Runners in Today's Boston Marathon

After last year's bombing at the Boston Marathon, this year's event has come back bigger and stronger if one takes the historical number of runners and spectators into account. The April 21, 2014 marathon and has 35,671 participants.

The Lake Tahoe area is well represented in Boston with 10 runners from the south and north shores.

South Lake Tahoe runners are Shandi Ashmore, Kristin Blocher and Matthew Grodzik. Bridget Matos of Zephyr Cove has joined them as well as Lyndsey Bednar of Stateline.

Historic V & T Railroad Begins Season With Annual Mother's Day Wild West Train Ride

National Train Day

To commemorate National Train Day on May 10, the Nevada State Railroad Museum will operate and offer rides aboard Virginia & Truckee Railway's McKeen motor car No. 22. The car entered service for the V&T on May 9, 1910, and was retired in 1945. No. 22 is the only restored and operable McKeen motor car in the world.

Hawley Grade in South Lake Tahoe: Waterfalls and History All In One Hike

There are many trails one can choose to hike in South Lake Tahoe, but how many actually have waterfalls and a 160 year old history behind them?

Spring has arrived in the Sierras which means it's time to get out and explore the local waterfalls. Due to the low snowpack this winter the falls won't be around as long as normal. My daughter and I decided to get in an aftershool hike this week on the Hawley National Recreational Trail.

Puppy Mill Protest in Reno on Saturday

Organizers are expecting a large turnout at Saturday's anti-puppy mill demonstration in Reno at the corner of Neil Rd and S. Virginia Street from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

"The event is being called to show the Reno and Sparks City Councils and the Washoe County Commission that citizens mean business when it comes to a ban on the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in retail stores in Reno, Sparks and Incline Village," stated Billy Howard, Founding Organizer for the popular initiative Puppy Mill Free Reno/Sparks/Washoe.

South Lake Tahoe Business EXPO on Friday

A record-breaking 100 businesses will participate in the 2014 Business EXPO –“Tahoe South in ACTION” this Friday, March 28. The event begins at 4:30pm and continues until 8:30pm in Harrah’s Lake Tahoe Convention Center. It will highlight South Shore businesses’ goods and services to an anticipated crowd of 1,200 attendees.

Community Workshop on Meyers Area Plan to be Held Wednesday

Residents of Meyers and the surrounding South Lake Tahoe community have been actively participating in what is called the "Meyers Area Plan." During the last community meeting on February 26 several concerned citizens spoke about what they wanted, and didn't want, to see their in their town.

El Dorado County officials took the numerous public comments made both at the meeting and on-line and have created potential revisions to the Draft Meyers Area Plan.
