$562 million need to cut down California's dead trees, Senator Feinstein seeks funding

Restoration work from fuel spill at Zephyr Cove Resort resumes on Monday

Even though those driving by and visiting the resort will see the activity, impact to operations is expected to be minimal. There may be some disruption to parking and the volleyball area but watercraft rentals and sightseeing boats will continue to operate during the excavation.

Early morning fire in South Lake Tahoe burns almost 3 acres
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/02/2016 - 9:47am10:30 a.m. update: The Ralph Fire, burning in the Heavenly Creek/Powerline Trail area above Ralph Drive in South Lake Tahoe, is now 60 percent contained.
Firefighters are now in mop-up mode and full containment is expected shortly according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The fourth fire to burn around South Lake Tahoe this week burned almost three acres early Friday morning in heavy brush on a steep slope above Pioneer Trail.

Firefighters quickly put out Carson River Resort fire
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/20/2016 - 6:16pm1:50 p.m. update 8/21: Fire officials have updated the acreage burned in Saturday's fire at the Carson River Resort. 29 acres burned have burned and fire fighters are in mop up mode.
The fire is now 60 percent contained.

8:00 a.m. update 8/21: Firefighters have been able to get a 40 percent containment line around the Carson Fire which has burned 50 acres around the Carson River Resort south of Markleeville.
A Hidden Gem in Tahoe

Tallac is located next to Camp Richardson and Fallen Leaf Lake Campground – an area most folks are familiar with – and yet locals constantly wander onto the site from the beach and announce they had no idea this place was here.

USFS begins final stage of Upper Truckee restoration project, river closed in area

USFS using chemicals at 70 sites to remove invasive plants
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/09/2016 - 10:52pmEarlier this week, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) resumed a project to eradicate, control, and contain known infestations of invasive plants in the Lake Tahoe Basin using chemical treatment. The work will continue at approximately 70 infestation sites through September, 2016.
Fire pit restrictions differ on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe

Restrictions differ between Tahoe Douglas Fire Department and the City of South Lake Tahoe and Lake Valley Fire Departments.
Cal Fire and the U.S Forest Service also have fire regulations to be aware of.

Fallen Leaf Campground will be closed starting Monday, June 27 so county and state public health and vector control officials can start pesticide treatments to minimize the risk of plague.
Wildfire closes Hwy 395 at Lee Vining
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/24/2016 - 5:33pm9:30 a.m. update 6/26: Firefighters have gained some control of the Marina Fire burning near Mono Lake and the town of Lee Vining. The 758 acre fire is 30 percent contained.
Highway 395 is closed at the town of Lee Vining on the south at the turnoff for Hawthorne, NV (Highway 167) on the north. However, California Highway Patrol is conducting one-way traffic escorts as conditions allow. Mono County Sheriff and Caltrans District 9 have worked tirelessly with CHP to implement this escort.
USFS: 66 million dead trees in Sierra; 26 million since October
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/23/2016 - 8:49amThe number of dead trees in the Sierra Nevada are now at historic levels and have fueled the risk of catastrohpic wildfires according to the U.S. Forest Service.
They announced Wednesday that they have identified an additional 26 million dead trees in California since October 2015, bringing the total to at least 66 million dead trees in the state. The most recent additions are located in six counties across 760,000 acres in the Southern Nevada region.
Fallen Leaf Campground to close next week for pesticide treatments
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/22/2016 - 9:13pmFallen Leaf Campground will be closed starting Monday, June 27 so county and state public health and vector control officials can start pesticide treatments to minimize the risk of plague.
The treatments are a public safety precaution after tests on 15 rodents resulted in one positive case of plague on June 20, 2016. There is minimal risk to the public at this time.
The campground will close at 7:00 p.m. Monday but all campers will need to check out by noon. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit expects it to reopen by Friday, July 1 in time for the holiday weekend.
Heavenly aims to connect 2,000 area children to the outdoors

Major restoration project planned for Taylor and Tallac Creek area

Named the Taylor and Tallac Restoration Project, the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will restore the large wetland complex where the two creeks were once connected through a series of four swales.
Public comment is sought on the Environmental Assessment, Initial Study and Initial Environmental Checklist.

Our region continues to take important steps to manage that wildfire threat, improve the health of our forests, and create fire adapted communities that are prepared for the next wildfire at Tahoe. But there is more work to do.
"Know Before You Go" into the back country of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by admin on Wed, 06/08/2016 - 10:02pmThe U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is urging backcountry hikers and backpackers to use extra care when visiting upper elevation areas of the Lake Tahoe Basin over the next several weeks as there is still significant snow above 8,000 feet in many locations. This past winter saw a return to normal snow-pack conditions and many backcountry trails are still covered with snow and ice leaving trails slippery and difficult to find. In addition, current warm temperatures have caused streams to flow higher and faster, which can make crossing difficult.
Liberty Utilities begins tree removal for electrical line upgrade at North Shore

Public access to the area will be limited during the helicopter operations for public safety.
Forest thinning project resumes near Fallen Leaf Lake
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/03/2016 - 5:14pmThe South Shore Hazardous Fuels Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration project on 10,000 acres near Fallen Leaf Lake has resumed.
Crews with the U.S. Forest Service will be mechanically removing whole trees off Fallen Leaf Road near the campground over the next several months and the area will be closed for public safety.
The goal of the project is to reduce the risk of severe wildfire and create healthier forests.
Prescribed fire burning near airport in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/26/2016 - 1:38pmA prescribed fire by the Lake Valley Fire Department in the trees and brush surrounding the Upper Truckee River caused some concern by area residents on Thursday afternoon.
Large plumes of smoke could be seen from miles away, and with the burn not on the normal U.S. Forest Service weekly list of prescribed burning, many calls were made from concerned citizens. According to the USFS office in South Lake Tahoe, they alone had dozens of phone calls.

The Nevada Division of State Lands, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service are scheduled to begin fire operations on Monday, May 23, 2016 on both the Northeast and South shores of Lake Tahoe.
South Shore: Burning may take place off Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road, off Panther Lane near the west end of Gardner Mountain and off Santa Claus Drive and West River Parkway near Christmas Valley.
Northeast Shore: Near Incline Village in the Rocky Point area along Tunnel Creek Road.
Time to get your firewood permits from Forest Service
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/16/2016 - 4:54pmThe U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin the sale of personal use fuelwood permits at the Forest Supervisor’s Office at 35 College Drive in South Lake Tahoe on Monday, May 23, 2016, and at the North Shore office at 855 Alder Avenue in Incline Village on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. Permits cost $20 per cord, with a two-cord minimum purchase and a limit of 10 cords per household.
Permits should be purchased early and wood collected promptly as fire restrictions are likely to go into effect early and there may be days when no cutting is allowed.
U.S. Forest Service unveils new website and app to track wildfires

Last week the Forest Service debuted a new website where residents can input their location and automatically receive real-time notifications about wildfires that break out in their area.
Then, the tool allows the user to follow any fire that has started within their area of interest, providing the option of text and email updates.
Fire agencies to continue prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe

Due to the heavy equipment needed, the Forest Service will issue a forest order closing the project area (units 1 and 148) to pedestrians from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily.

With funds from the Forest Service employee association’s Wellness, Recreation and Morale fund, the B&B cooks prepared beef tacos, Mexican black beans and Spanish rice to celebrate the upcoming Cino de Mayo holiday.
Six area meadows tapped to be restored by Forest Service

Nevada Beach opening two weeks ahead of schedule

The campground and day-use area will open this Saturday, April 30, 2016. Campsites will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until the reservation system is up and running.

Work on new parking lot at Zephyr Cove Stables begins next week
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/28/2016 - 8:17pmWork on a new driveway and parking lot at Zephyr Cove Stables begins the week of May 1, 2016 when the first stage of the Zephyr Cove Stables Upgrade Project begins. Crews will be upgrading existing facilities, trails and utilities to meet current building code and accessibility standards and install Best Management Practices (BMPs) to improve water quality.
This is a joint project between the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), Zephyr Cove Resort and Douglas County.
Upper Truckee River near airport closed to the public this summer: Rafting to be affected

To accomplish their final tasks, the meadow and river will be closed to the public for much of the summer in order to divert the water into the new channel, relocate fish and mussels, and finish up vegetation projects.

New roads, campsites and building relocation at Camp Richardson

Officially named the Camp Richardson Resort Campground and Vehicle Circulation Best Management Practices (BMPs) Retrofit, the result will allow the resort to meet current standards for water quality protection and increase universal accessibility to the area's activities.

USFS seeks public comment on Burke Creek restoration project
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/03/2016 - 7:08pmThe U.S. Forest Service seeks input on their draft environmental assessment for the restoration for the Burke Creek Highway 50 Crossing and Realignment Project.
The first two phases of the proposed project would restore the Burke Creek channel and adjacent marsh, reduce the amount of sediment that flows into nearby Lake Tahoe and reduce the potential for flooding on U.S. Highway 50.
New parking lot, pathways and corral on tap for Zephyr Cove Resort this summer

When completed, there will be 1,500 feet of new pathways between the stop light at Zephyr Cove Resort and Warrior Way, new paved parking areas and improved erosion control and water quality areas due to a collaborative effort between the U.S. Forest Service, Zephyr Cove Resort and Douglas County.

California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service have projects planned near Burton Creek, Sugar Pine Point and D.L. Bliss state parks. On the East Shore, operations are scheduled to take place on Spooner Summit and near Camp Galilee. US Forest Service seeks Lake Tahoe Basin off-highway vehicle comments

LTBMU would like to hear what local OHV needs are in the basin, so they are accepting public comment from March 8 to April 4, 2016. .
Funds for the grants come from the State of California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division.
New water lines and fire hydrants in place to fight Lake Tahoe wildfires

Smokey Bear visits South Lake Tahoe Head Start class

They were there to teach the pre=kindergarten students about fire safety and fire prevention.
Widespread prescribed burns to continue around Lake Tahoe

On the East Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Logan Shoals Vista Point, Camp Galilee, Spooner Summit and Sand Harbor.
On the South Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Spring Creek, Panther Road, and Lake Tahoe Boulevard near Sawmill Road.
