The lone new business item was for the creation of a City policy where local parades are concerned, an item requested to be placed on the agenda by Councilmember JoAnn Conner.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 02/20/2016 - 1:15amOn October 27, 2015, Sue Novasel, the County Supervisor representing South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Tahoma and Pollock Pines was served a “notice of intent to circulate a recall petition” by a group of citizens who said they are “tired of the corruption and cronyism that has plagued our county for years.” It wasn’t only Novasel, but all five of the County Supervisors, Shiva Frentzen, Ron Mikulaco, Michael Ranalli and Brian Veerkamp.

The plastic bag ban ordinance was amended to only affect grocery stores and not retail outlets. Former Mayor Hal Cole asked for the issue to be brought back before the council in October. "I thought we were only voting to bring the ordinance back for review, not to pass it," Cole said about his vote on October 15, 2013.

Proposition F, a measure to curb short-term rentals drastically, was losing by a margin of 61 percent to 39 percent, according to the early count of mail-in ballots.
Prop. F, the most contentious and most expensive issue on the Tuesday ballot, centers on whether vacation rentals divert scarce housing to lucrative illegal year-round hotels, as its backers claimed, or help middle-class people make ends meet, as Airbnb and other opponents said.
One election on the South Shore: Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District

The only item on the ballot for El Dorado County voters at the lake was for the election of four board members of the Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District, two for two year terms, and two for four year terms. Only those living within the boundary lines of the district were eligible to both run for office, and to vote.
South Lake Tahoe Mayor wants to revisit plastic bag ban for retail stores
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/20/2015 - 1:28pmOn June 14, 2014, the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted to delay the implementation of the second phase of the plastic bag ban in the city. Originally slated to begin on October 15, 2014, the Council, by a vote of 3-2, moved the start date out one year to October 15, 2015.
Now that the second phase of the ban has started, Mayor Hal Cole wants to revisit that portion of the ban.
Cole said he wants to undo the ban on plastic bags for retail stores and asked for the topic to be on an upcoming agenda.

Sample Tahoe’s newest cocktail creations at the sixth annual Signature Cocktail Contest. Hosted by the Barton Foundation, the community event will take place Wednesday, September 23 at the Riva Grill at 5:30 p.m.
Contest attendees can sample an assortment of cocktails created by Tahoe mixologists who are comprised of bartenders from local establishments, each showcase a unique concoction with Tahoe Blue Vodka and have been known to add less traditional ingredients like cotton candy or potato chips.
City Council addresses craft shows and outdoor displays
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/22/2015 - 10:08pmThe South Lake Tahoe City Council narrowly approved a new temporary craft show ordinance and increased fee schedule during their meeting on Tuesday.
"Seems like overkill," said Councilwoman JoAnn Conner in her vote against the ordinance. "Its a tremendous amount of work for anyone who wants to come in and do an event and its a tremendous amount of work for staff."
Conner was speaking of the new ordinance which changes the rules for the eight temporary craft shows held annually in the city each year. She and Tom Davis were the two dissenting votes.
Grand Jury finds Auditor/Controller to be a bully and uncooperative
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/17/2015 - 9:15pmThe Grand Jury investigated several allegations surrounding voter elected El Dorado County Auditor/Controller Joe Harn, including the fact that he lost the county more than $3.5 million due to incomplete paperwork submitted to the State of California.
The Grand Jury also found that Harn is guilty of disrespectful and harassing behavior toward others. One member of the Board of Supervisors told them, "Everybody knows Joe Harn is a bully. They have known it for twenty years.”
Reid's retirement – bad news for Lake Tahoe and Nevada

It doesn't matter if you love or hate Democratic Sen. Harry Reid to agree that the announcement of his retirement just dramatically reduced our state's political power in Washington D.C.
Nevada will go from a state whose issues were often at the center of debate because of Reid's position as minority leader to a state without a congressional power player in either party.

Bijou Bike Park on Tuesday's City Council agenda

Members of the Bijou Bike Park Association (BBPA) presented the original project to the City back in September of 2011, and since then they've been working non-stop in their efforts to create the park. South Lake Tahoe BMX and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association have been helping BBPA in their efforts.
South Lake Tahoe model wins Nevada favorite model's contest

Kelsey Adams, daughter of DR. Steve Adams and Colleen Karcher, has been modeling for several years. She entered the contest for fun, not sure of what to expect.
City Council appoints 16 citizens to commissions; three openings still exist

There was just one spot filled of the required two for the Airport Land Use Commission. Michael Siracuse was appointed to the two year term. Ted Long had applied for the other position but the Council said he didn't meet the experience requirements. The City will look for a qualified candidate to fill the open spot.

El Dorado County certifies election, final counts in for all races
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/26/2014 - 9:59pmTwenty-one days after the election, the final results have now been certified by the El Dorado County elections department.
The closest race was for the three open seats for South Lake Tahoe City Council. The top vote getter was long time local Wendy David who had 18.05 % of the vote with 1727 residents feeling confident she'd represent them well. Coming in second was incumbent Tom Davis who received 1461 votes, or 15.52% of the vote. Austin Sass moved ahead of incumbent Angela Swanson and ended up with 1318 votes to Swanson's 1289, just .31% difference.

With 100% of the precincts counted by 1 a.m. November 5, El Dorado County election employees have been counting the absentee and provisional ballots since then. They released their third report of the count today, showing little change from Friday's numbers.

In June, the County Supervisor District 5 primary election ended up with just 14 votes separating the second, third and fourth positions. Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/06/2014 - 12:28amWith just 13 votes separating two candidates and deciding who will be on the South Lake Tahoe City Council, thousands of uncounted absentee and provisional ballots could actually change the outcome.
El Dorado County election officials told South Tahoe Now today that an estimated 12,000 absentee ballots and 1,000 provisional ballots may take until Thanksgiving to count. By law they have 18 days to certify the election and all votes must be counted by then.

Congress was in a hurry to have the support of the Republican dominated Nevada territory for President Abraham Lincoln's reelection. The three electoral votes Nevada would bring helped bring the end of slavery when Lincoln was re-elected just 9 days after Nevada became a state.
Sacramento Bee gets it wrong on the El Dorado County Supervisor race
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/12/2014 - 7:46pmVoters in El Dorado County District 5 will be voting for a new supervisor on November 4 and the winner will either be Sue Novasel or Kenny Curtzwiler. The Sacramento Bee's Voter Guide got the candidates wrong as they wrote that Sue's opponent was Kevin Brown.
Before all the votes were counted during June's primary, Brown looked like he was headed to the runoff in November, but ended up in 4th place with 17.61% of the vote. The top two vote getters in June earned a spot on the ballot in November.
Novasel - 1,557 votes 28.47%
Curtzwiler - 977 votes 17.87%
Swanson - 967 votes 17.67%

In order to be eligible to vote, one must be 18, a U.S. citizen, are not in prison or on parole for conviction of a felony, or have not been ruled mentally incompetent to vote by the courts.
Seven South Lake Tahoe City Council candidates vying for votes at forum Wednesday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/11/2014 - 12:41amThe seven candidates for South Lake Tahoe City Council were at Wednesday nights Candidate Forum at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. The Tahoe Chamber and Tahoe Daily Tribune hosted the evening which had Rabbi Evon Yakar moderating the questions and answers.
About 100 people showed up to listen to panel who were given questions prepared by the chamber's new political committee as well as those asked by the audience. The questions were asked of different candidates so not everyone was asked the same one.

A candidates forum for the El Dorado County District 5 Supervisor race will be held on July 29th at 6:30 p.m. at the California Conservation Corps (CCC) Tahoe Center building in Meyers.
The forum was rescheduled from it's original date of July 22.
TahoeChamber, Tahoe Daily Tribune and Tahoe Regional Young Professionals will host the forum in anticipation of the November election in which two candidates, Kenny Curtzwiler and Sue Novasel, will campaign for the position to be vacated by current Supervisor Norma Santiago.

Sue Novasel retained her lead by getting 28.47% of the vote (1,557 votes) and Kenny Curtzwiler came from behind and ended up with 17.87% of the vote (977 votes). Kevin Brown from Pollock Pines had the 2nd place lead after the precincts were counted but lost ground on the mail-ins and provisional votes. He ended up behind third place finisher Angela Swanson who was 10 votes behind Curtzwiler.
The top two vote getters move onto the General Election in November.

people made this happen. The Committee for South Lake Tahoe Library –
Measure L worked unceasingly. Our local media gave us the opportunity to
share the high stakes involved in this measure through articles,
letters, guest columns, advertising and endorsements. Property owners
allowed us to place signs all over town. Countless volunteers shared
information with their friends, neighbors and work colleagues.

Sue Novasel and Kevin Brown were in the lead after Tuesday's election for the District 5 seat on the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors. Novasel came out on top with Brown coming in second and with the top two vote getters proceeding to the November runoff most assumed it would be those two names they'd see on the ballot.

Proposition 42: Results Showing Voters Approve More Protection to Open Meeting Law

Proposition 42 requires local government compliance with laws providing for public access to local government body meetings and records of government officials.

Harrison Avenue Project Moves Forward

In Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council action, the final steps of the Harrison Avenue Project were unanimously approved after 20 years of planning, discussing and talking by the City, business owners, property owners and residents.
The project will start this spring with substantial completion by October 15, 2014. The wrap up of the project will be complete by December 1, 2014.

South Lake Tahoe in the Running For "America's Best Ski Destination"

The Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority is seeking votes from the local community through the month until the contest's end on December 30 at 8:50 pm PST. Online votes can be made daily on the voting site. North Lake Tahoe is also in the running along with Sun Valley, Idaho and other big resorts.

Council Votes to Ban Single Use Plastic Bags in South Lake Tahoe

This issue was passionately debated by council members and the 8 citizens that offered their comment during today's City Council meeting. The city council is expected to finalize the ordinance later this month. The ban will take effect in grocery stores and farmers markets three months after adoption and will apply to all retail establishments after one year. Pharmacies,restaurants, and non-profits are exempted.

Lake Tahoe Regional Plan Update approved

Twelve of the 14 voting members of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's governing board voted in favor of the new plan, with one member voting against it and another abstaining, according to TRPA spokesman Jeff Cowan.
Business interests say the plan is an overdue overhaul of regulations that will jump-start Tahoe's tourism economy while also protecting its environment.

“We are very grateful for those who cultivated and formed our City for future generations. We were established to provide core services; snow removal, police and fire; and this is what we’re going back to forty-seven years later,” said Mayor Claire Fortier. “Let’s all celebrate.”
