Safety tips for Lake Tahoe holiday and winter travel

Nevada's Department of Transportation, Highway Patrol, City of South Lake Tahoe and Caltrans all had words of advice for travelers this holiday weekend. Roads will be full of cars, and the added threat of high winds and a snow storm will create issues for those not prepared on the road.

High winds ahead of weekend snow storm in Lake Tahoe

It was a beautiful Thanksgiving Day in South Lake Tahoe, but things are about to change.

Another system is headed into the Lake Tahoe basin on Friday, bringing with it winds 20-30 mph with prolonged wind gusts from 30-55 mph. The wind advisory is in effect from 10:00 a.m. Friday to 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

Waves are expected to be 2-4 feet with the highest ones on the north and east shores.

Road controls around Lake Tahoe roads: 3-5" of snow at Heavenly for opening day

A fast moving storm dropped up to a couple of inches of snow at lake level overnight, leaving behind chain controls over the passes, a wind advisory and a chance for a little more snow during the day Wednesday.

Heavenly Mountain Resort opens today with a reported 3-5" of new snow.

Road controls at 8:00 a.m.:

HWY 50/Echo Summit - Chains Required, All Vehicles Except 4-Wheel Drive with Snow Tires) on US-50 from mile post 59.8 in El Dorado County to mile post 70.6 in El Dorado County in California. (Twin Bridges to Meyers)

Winter weather advisory in effect 10 p.m. Tuesday through 10:00 a.m. Wednesday

A quick storm will pass through Lake Tahoe beginning Tuesday evening, leaving the busy travel day of Wednesday fairly clear, though cold.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 10:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. Wednesday with the heaviest snow expected between midnight and 5:00 a.m.

They are called for snow, 2"-4" at lake level, up to 8" near the crest by Wednesday morning.

Winds will increase Tuesday evening with them coming out of the southwest 10-20 mph with gusts 34-40 mph possible. Resulting waves on the lake will be 2-4'.

Emerald Fire showed how fuel reduction minimized forest damage

It doesn’t take a wildland fire professional to see how fuel reduction can protect forests and communities.

It just takes a field trip to the site of the Emerald fire near the southwestern shores of Lake Tahoe.

Despite burning at the same time and under similar conditions to the disastrous Little Valley fire, the Emerald fire was much less destructive.

Winter weather advisory in effect until Sunday afternoon for Lake Tahoe

Expect a windy and snowy weekend in South Lake Tahoe! Ski resorts on the South Shore had to postpone opening days, so maybe Mother Nature will be helping them out!

There is a wind advisory in place for South Lake Tahoe in advance of the winter storm headed our way. Expect winds 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph overnight Friday, increasing Saturday to 20-30 mph and gusts to 55 mph. Ridgetop winds could gust up to 110 mph. Waves on the lake are expected to be 2-5' with the highest on the north and east shore.

The winds subside slightly as a winter storm moves in.

Prescribed burn near Silver Fork sending smoke into Lake Tahoe Basin

There are multiple prescribed fires both in the Eldorado National Forest and around the Lake Tahoe Basin today, but it is one of those that had residents worried and resulted in phone calls into local fire departments and the Forest Service.

This week, 119 acres are being burned by Owens Camp, near Silver Fork and the American River west of South Lake Tahoe, and the winds associated with a front moving into the Lake Tahoe Basin Tuesday resulted in visible smoke that could be seen around the lake.

Ready for a drop in temperatures and some snow?

A strong, but quick, cold front is headed to Lake Tahoe on Tuesday bringing with it high winds and some snow before it heads out Wednesday evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a lake wind advisory from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday through 4:00 a.m. Wednesday. Winds will be increasing during the day Tuesday, with wind gusts growing from 15 to 25 mph in the morning to gusts of 45 mph by late in the afternoon afternoon and peaking to 50 mph as the storm enters the basin.

Sunny Veterans Day weekend in Lake Tahoe; quick storm with snow coming mid-week

Major changes are on their way to the Sierra, but Veterans Day starts off a nice weekend before the fast moving storm arrives on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service says to expect snow levels rapidly falling along the cold front Wednesday, and possible into Thursday morning. Gusty winds are anticipated Tuesday into Wednesday. Snowfall amounts, and exact timing of storm will become more evident to forecasters as the storm gets closer.

But before then, get out and enjoy Fall in South Lake Tahoe!

The NWS forecast:

Not only Lake Tahoe forest service areas selling Christmas tree permits

For the first time in several decades, the Eldorado National Forest will sell Christmas tree cutting permits. Permits for pine, fir or cedar trees up to 6 inches in diameter at the base will be available beginning November 14, 2016. "The goal of this program is to provide an enjoyable holiday experience for families and friends in the natural setting of their national forest" said Forest Supervisor Laurence Crabtree.

Two storms headed to Lake Tahoe bringing rain, wind and snow

Two storms are headed to Lake Tahoe and each will bring rain, wind and a chance of snow.

The first storm will hit Thursday into Friday, with the other one right on its tail Saturday night into Sunday.

Storm one:

Hurricane Seymour off the coast of Mexico will bring heavy rainfall that will likely cause travel delays, especially for those driving across the Sierra. The peak period for heavy rain looks like it will be early Friday morning. Rain will spillover into Western Nevada as well, so be prepared with ponding water on the roadway.

Prescribed burn blamed for Little Valley Fire

Fire investigators say the Oct. 14 Little Valley Fire, which destroyed 23 homes, 17 outbuildings and chewed more than 2,200 acres was caused by a prescribed fire conducted earlier in the month by the Nevada Division of Forestry.

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources made the report available shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday, and was unavailable for comment.

Winds and chance of rain in South Lake Tahoe in forecast

Mild weather at the lake this weekend, perfect for fall yard cleanup and a trip to Apple Hill and other fall favorites.

Southwest breezes will increase Saturday and Sunday as low pressure strengthens off the Pacific Northwest coast. Breezy and cooler weather is on tap for early next week with a chance for showers, mainly over northeast California. There is a slight chance of upper elevation snow at the end of the week.

The forecast for South Lake Tahoe from the National Weather Service:

High winds and wet storm brings snow to Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe residents saw some dusting of snow overnight Sunday and Monday morning. In the last 48 hours, the Lake Tahoe Airport saw wind gusts 40-52 mph.

Chain controls remain this morning on Highway 89 through Christmas Valley and over Luther Pass, as well as I80 from Kingvale to Donner Lake. Chains are required unless driving a 4WD with snow tires.

A wind advisory remains for Lake Tahoe until 11:00 a.m.

Today - Isolated showers before 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 49. West wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Emerald Fire now 100% contained, road remains closed for cleanup

The Emerald Fire is 100 percent contained after burning 176 acres along Highway 89 near South Lake Tahoe.

Debris from the weekend's high winds and torrential rains near the burn area continue to impact the roadway and Highway 89 remains closed until Caltrans completes cleanup. It is closed from Fallen Leaf Lake to Emerald Bay North Gate.

According to Liberty Utilities, all customers have had power restored.

The following areas will be open to residents only:

Heavy rain totals with Saturday's storm in the Sierra, more on the way

Since Friday morning, rain has pummeled many areas of the Sierra Nevada. As of 8:00 a.m. Sunday, South Lake Tahoe had received 2.54" of rain, with more on the way. By Monday morning, a trace of new snow could be seen on the South Shore.

Little Valley Fire is now 55% contained, 3,400 acres burned

10/16/16 update 7:00PM - The Little Valley Fire is holding at 3,400 acres with 55 percent containment. 667 personnel remain on the incident. More rain forecast tonight which will aid in extinguishing the fire which started on Friday.

* * *

Flash flood warning for Emerald Fire and Little Valley Fire areas

There is a flash flood warning on Saturday for the Little Valley and Emerald Fire burn scars.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued the warning for Saturday afternoon through late Saturday night.

Another band of heavy rain is expected Saturday afternoon with rainfall rates over over 1" in three hours in the areas of the burns. The rain could trigger debris flows and rock falls, which have already been reported across Highway 89 near the Emerald Fire.

These rocks and debris may affect area homes and highways, the NWS said.

I-580 and Eastlake reopen as Little Valley Fire burns 2,000 acres; 19 homes burn

UPDATE 1:00PM 10/15/16: The Little Valley Fire in Washoe Valley has now burned 3,460 acres with 5 percent containment. Four injuries due to smoke inhalation have been reported.

8:00AM update 10/15: Highway 89 remains closed in both directions from Fallen Leaf Lake Road to Emerald Bay due to the Emerald Fire which remains 80 percent contained this morning. Acreage burned is 210 acres.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There are 3 engines and 12 firefighters still on the scene.

Opening time for Hwy 89 is still unclear. CHP estimates Saturday afternoon and Caltrans estimates the road will be closed until Monday. This is to allow crews to clean up the fallen trees and other debris on, and near, the roadway.
