Big mountain freeride action meets ski and boarder-cross strategy through Sunday in a mad-dash race for cash, as Kirkwood Mountain Resort hosts the first stop on the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour, presented by Bank of the West. Taking place at four Lake Tahoe resorts, it’s head–to-head action, four at a time, top to bottom, down a wide open course over natural terrain and snow conditions. This is the ultimate test of ski and riding skills.

For the past 17 years, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue have collaborated together to teach the 4th graders at Incline Elementary School about Winter Wilderness Survival, better known as the “Hug-A-Tree” program. The program focuses on teaching children what to do should they ever find themselves lost in the wilderness. This year the program will be held at the Incline Elementary School on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

Weather systems unlikely to produce large snow amounts
Submitted by Editor on Wed, 01/23/2013 - 1:29pmA weak low pressure system will pass through region tonight, helping to increase winds and mix out valley inversions as well as bring light snow showers to the foothills and Sierra, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Snow levels could drop between 5,500 feet to 6,500 feet with slush snow accumulation of about two inches possible above 6,000 feet through Thursday, said Jessica Kielhorn, meteorologist technician with the weather service.

Latest long-term forecast leans toward drier end to winter for Reno-Tahoe area

But one thing is clear. How the winter ends up, at least at this point, is largely a toss-up.

Due to the ordinarily high volume of celebrants within the Stateline casino core area during the event, U.S. Highway 50 may be closed to vehicle traffic in the evening if necessary for public safety. If that should occur, vehicle traffic will be diverted around the Stateline casino core area using upper and lower Lake Parkway Drive.
