Report: Lake Tahoe clarity improves but climate change threatens lake over long-term

While clarity improved at Lake Tahoe for a second straight year in 2012, long-term trends show that climate change is impacting the Lake Tahoe Basin with drier years, less precipitation, higher lake temperatures and projected lower lake levels.

These conclusions are found within the lake's annual health exam,"Tahoe: State of the Lake Report 2013," released today by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at the University of California, Davis.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts report growth despite dry winter

Some Lake Tahoe ski resorts say their revenues improved this past ski season because of new, automated snow machines.

With all Lake Tahoe ski resorts now closed for the season, operators are reporting record profits, despite a lack of snow after the early season.

The ski runs above Lake Tahoe are quiet and ski resorts operators are counting the season's cash and customers. Vail Resorts reports a 10 percent rise in sales at its 7 properties nation-wide, but it said growth at its Tahoe resorts was slower. The problem was a dry January through April.

This new study, released today by the California Air Resources Board and the Electric Power Research Institute, marks the first time that researchers have conducted source-oriented sampling of these particles in the atmosphere.

I would gladly pay for that as I know others would also.

Outdoors with Don Q: Things you need to know about ice fishing

With the bitter January cold weather in the Sierra and above Lake Tahoe behind us, we do have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. And that ice covering provides an excellent opportunity to catch fish.
Ice fishing is a unique sport that requires a whole different set of fishing techniques, gear and clothing, as opposed to lazy fishing on a warm, drowsy day in the middle of the summer. So, if you’ve never tried fishing through the ice, here’s some information that should be more than enough to get you “hooked” on this winter sport:
