Coming from as far as Australia and as near as North Lake Tahoe, more than 200 men and women athletes are gearing up for a race to remember at Northern Nevada’s inaugural Expedition Man Endurance Festival and Ultra-Distance-Triathlon, taking place Saturday, August 25. Athletes will begin with a swim at Zephyr Cove Resort at Lake Tahoe, then onto a more than 100-mile-bike-ride through Carson City and a long-run along the Truckee River, ending at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department’s Explorer Post traveled to Tracy, Calif., during the weekend of July 13 to 15 to participate in the 2012 Central Valley Explorer Competition. The team of Joey Acker, Daniel Loyola, Allison Roberts and Hector Vasquez as well as their advisor, Police Officer Rebecca Inman made the trip.

A Stage 3 breast cancer survivor, Phillips has been a cheerleader and true inspiration to hundreds of women in South Lake Tahoe.

The 43rd annual Squaw Valley Community of Writers will convene again this summer with acclaimed workshops in Poetry, Fiction, Nonfiction and Screenwriting. As part of the workshop, the Squaw Valley Community of Writers will be hosting an extraordinary evening of poetry readings on Thursday, June 28, at 8 p.m. in The Olympic Village Lodge at Squaw Valley.

As part of the evening of poetry, Kazim Ali, Robert Hass, Sharon Olds, Claudia Rankine and C.D. Wright will read from their published and unpublished work, including poems written in Squaw Valley just days before.

Squaw Valley is offering free Aerial Tram tickets to active duty members of the military this summer. This offer is available seven days a week, including weekends and holidays. Members of the military can show proof of active duty status to Squaw Valley's Tickets and Season Pass Center to redeem their Tram tickets.

Jaycee Dugard made her first appearance at a public event since her 1991 kidnapping on Friday night, receiving an award at the United Nations in New York and praise from fellow honoree Oprah Winfrey.
Dugard, 31, was presented the Inspiration Award from fashion designer and philanthropist Diane von Furstenberg at the DVF Awards, which honor women who display leadership, strength and courage. But first she was lauded by Oprah.

I was busy some other place when "Star Wars, The Phantom Menace" opened in 1999. Lucky me. Not so lucky now when I went to see the reworked original decked out in 3D. The film is now playing at the Horizon Stadium Cinema at Stateline, Lake Tahoe. And for all those Star Wars fans, and they know who they are, you won't want to miss it; though you can see the release without 3D and you won't be missing much.
