STATELINE, Nev. – Country star Lee Brice is heading to Lake Tahoe as part of the 23rd annual Hooters International Pageant on Thursday, June 20 at the 2019 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series in the Harveys Outdoor Arena.

Women around the country have been participating in local pageants, all to win a spot at the big event in Lake Tahoe.

Viewing the pageant and concert are open to the public and tickets are on sale now.

Lake Tahoe Chapter of DAR celebrates its organization

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) members from all over California came together on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course to celebrate the new DAR Chapter in South Lake Tahoe.

The chapter was officially organized by the National Society on February 5 of this year, and was welcomed to the city with a proclamation at the South Lake Tahoe City Council's April 16 meeting, Sunday's event was the formal recognition of the chapter's status as the newest in California. City Council member Tamara Wallace attended the event and read the proclamation to the attendees.

The ceremony will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 27, 2019, at Happy Homestead Cemetery located at 1261 Johnson Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe.

After the ceremony, the public is invited to join Legion and Auxiliary members for refreshments at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, also in South Lake Tahoe.

Cabin west of Lake Tahoe suffers total loss in fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A home at the intersection of Highway 50 and Sierra-at-Tahoe Road in the historic community of Phillips is a total loss after a fire ripped through it Friday night.

At 11:15 p.m. on April 12, Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) crews were called out to the scene along with several other agencies. Upon arrival, they found the home fully engulfed. Inside the home had been two women, one male, two dogs and two cats.

The male was transported to Barton Hospital with smoke inhalation and one cat was lost to the fire.

Pair arrested for alleged South Lake Tahoe crime spree

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two women from the Bay Area have been arrested on suspicion of being responsible for several car burglaries over a two day period in South Lake Tahoe.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received the first call at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10 after a car burglary at the Sierra Athletic Club on Tahoe Keys Boulevard. A car window had been smashed and a purse was stolen.

The second call came in at 5:30 p.m. from the Fit Republic Gym on Lake Tahoe Boulevard. The same method was used - a broken car window and a stolen purse.

Local woodturner donates piece for Soroptimist charity auction

South Lake Tahoe artist Malcolm Tibbetts has once again donated one of his famous woodturning creations to the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) Elegant Evening fundraising event on Saturday, April 13, 2019.

Bids on "Ovals in the Woods" are accepted online and bidders do not have to attend the event to participate.

Tibbetts left the Heavenly management team in 2002 to start a new career that would work within his longtime love of woodworking. He is now a full-time studio artist designing, engineering and creating amazing works of art in segmented woodturning.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund announces awardees of $84,000 in grants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund has announced their 2019 grant recipients. This year, there were over 27 organizations who applied for the grants, with $84,000 being distributed to 14 non-profit organizations

Tahoe National Forest helitak captain dies in Texas crash

A helicopter accident on the Sam Houston National Forest in Texas has killed a helitack captain from the Tahoe National Forest.

Officials with the U.s. Forest Service said Daniel J. Laird, a 23-year agency employee, was joined by two other crew members on a helicopter assisting a routine controlled burn on the forest when the helicopter went down. The two other crew members were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Laird, who lived in Yuba City, is survived by his wife and daughter.

Drug money allegedly motivated man accused of murdering Gardnerville women, Reno couple

A Washoe County detective says alleged murderer Wilber Ernesto Martinez-Guzman told police he robbed and killed his elderly victims during a 10-day rampage in January because he needed money to buy methamphetamine to support his drug addiction, according to the Associated Press.

Wilber Ernesto Martinez-Guzman was arrested on Jan. 19 in connection with the four murders of Gardnerville woman Connie Koontz, 56, Gardnerville woman Sophia Renken, 74, and South Reno Couple Jerry and Sherry David, 81 and 80.

South Lake Tahoe trio arrested after alleged kidnapping, domestic violence and drug case

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three people have been arrested in connection with a domestic violence case out of South Lake Tahoe and a kidnapping case out of Stateline, Nevada that began on Saturday, March 9 in the city limits.

Truckee Fire sells their airboat to Washoe County Hasty Team for $1

The Truckee Fire Protection District sold their airboat used for in-the-water rescues to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Hasty Team for just one dollar. This important piece of equipment can be used for missions on shallow bodies of water such as Swan Lake and could also potentially be used to speed response time for ice rescues, particularly in areas where thin ice is an issue.

When the Truckee department acquired a new boat for their uses they transferred ownership to Washoe County who had borrowed the boat in the past for help at the Reno Air Races.

Two South Lake Tahoe cold cases solved with genetic genealogy

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Two decades old murders in the South Lake Tahoe area have been solved using genetic genealogy, identifying a deceased local man as the murderer of two women.

During a El Dorado Cold Case Task Force press conference in Placerville Monday, District Attorney Vern Pierson said Joseph Stephen Holt of South Lake Tahoe and San Jose was responsible for killing Brynn Rainey in 1977 and Carol Ann Andersen in 1979.

Originally scheduled for the LTCC Duke Theater, the fundraiser had to move due to some broken water pipes in the theater on Tuesday.

The Vagina Monologues returns for its 17th year in South Lake Tahoe with a goal this year of raising $15,000 for scholarships for female-identified students at Lake Tahoe Community College.

After a six-month investigation into drug transactions in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the El Dorado Sheriff's Department Narcotics Task Force executed search warrants at two locations in South Lake Tahoe on August 23, 2017. Large amounts of heroin, methamphetamine and approximately 12 firearms were seized in the search. Lynwood Towle, Shawn German, Melissa Griffis, Paul Ryan, and Krystal Long were all arrested, charged, and eventually pleaded guilty to various charges stemming from those searches.

38 years after skull is found, Jane Doe has a name

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - On March 22, 1974, Nancy Webster, 37, and her daughter, 19-year-old Rebecca Dinkel were seen at a café in the Garden Valley area of El Dorado County.

They left the cafe shortly after Nancy received a threatening phone call from her abusive, common-law husband, Clifton Mahaney.

It was the last time anyone saw either one of them alive.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Jeff Meston hanging up his hat

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Fire Chief Jeff Meston is retiring from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) on February 28, five years and five months after he came out of retirement to head up the department.

On Friday, February 1, Meston submitted his resignation to the City.

"When I was hired by CM (City Manager) Kerry I promised to spend between 3-5 years with the City Fire Department and bring them as far as I could to be a “world class” fire department," Meston said in his resignation letter.

He feels he's accomplished what he set out to do.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund has $84,000 to give away to community nonprofits

Applications for $84,000 in grants from the Tahoe Women's Community Fund are now available and will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019. The Angel of Tahoe Lisa Maloff joined others in the group to have such a generous amount to give away this year.

Any non-profit organization that serves the South Shore of Lake Tahoe is welcome to apply to one of the "areas of need" described below. Organizations that received a grant in 2018 from TWCF, are ineligible to apply. Each organization may submit only one application.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue honors many at annual awards ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - "This is a good day for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department," said Chief Jeff Meston as he began the annual awards ceremony, celebrating the men and women of SLTFR.

To begin the afternoon, Chief Meston officially welcomed Battalion Chief Jay Manning to the department. Manning came on board at the end of November from Visalia, California where he worked for 18.5 years for the fire department. His wife Stephanie pinned his uniform as son Jacob and daughter Harley looked on. The family is wrapping up their move to the Sierra.

Similarities between Douglas County and Washoe County homicides

RENO, Nev. - Keeping the community safe is the number one priority of law enforcement working on four recent murders in Reno and Douglas County. This was the message from Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam during a press conference late Thursday afternoon.

Two elderly people, a man and a woman, were killed in a home in southwest Reno. Their bodies were discovered on January 16 after concerned neighbors called law enforcement after not seeing the residents. Their names and ages have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Soroptimists honor South Tahoe High and Whittell High girls

Ten senior girls at South Tahoe High School and Whittell High Schools were honored by the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe club on Wednesday for their service to the community and their leadership, athletic and academic achievements.

Douglas County community resources to deal with grief, anxiety and feelings of being unsafe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless is hosting an open house at the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room on February 7, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The event will begin with tours of the Warm Room from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Warm Room is the overnight emergency shelter we operate each winter to give our homeless neighbors respite from the worst of the winter weather. This year the Warm Room is located at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe, next door to Ernie’s Coffee Shop.

Law enforcement continues search for murder suspect(s) in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The investigation into the murder of two Gardnerville, Nevada women continues and Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley urges the community to remain vigilant and to pay attention in their neighborhoods.

During the evening of January 9-10, 56-year-old Connie Koontz was murdered in her home on James Road and sometime in the overnight hours of January 12-13, 74-year-old Sophia Renken was also murdered in her home.

El Dorado County's newly-elected officials sworn in

Two El Dorado County Supervisors and eight other elected officials were sworn into office on Monday, January 7 during a ceremony in the Board of Supervisors meeting room in Placerville.

El Dorado County Superior Court Presiding Judge Suzanne N. Kingsbury administered the oath.

Board of Supervisors who took the oath of office were Lori Parlin, who was elected to represent District 4, and Sue Novasel, who was re-elected to represent District 5. It was a historic moment since, for the first time in El Dorado County the majority of the Board of Supervisors is comprised of women

Tahoe Warm Room finds new location - opens December 12

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless has announced the opening of their Warm Room for the 2018-19 season on Wednesday, December 12. This year they will be located inside the old Emerald Bay Dentistry office at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe.

The Warm Room will operate nightly from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. through April 2019.

For the fourth year, the Warm Room will provide overnight refuge from the elements in a safe and warm environment for approximately twenty-five adult men and women who are experiencing homelessness during winter months.

South Lake Tahoe Olympians head to Breckenridge for Dew Tour

South Lake Tahoe Olympians Jamie Anderson, Hannah Teter and Maddie Bowman are headed for the mountains of Colorado as they take center stage at the annual winter Dew Tour ski and snowboard competition and festival in Breckenridge, Colo. December 13-16, 2018.

After last year's Dew Tour serving as an Olympic Qualifying event, fans and athletes will see the upcoming event creatively showcase its unique and progressive competitions, including the Modified Superpipe Presented by Toyota, Slopestyle, Adaptive Banked Slalom Presented by Toyota, Streetstyle and Team Challenge events.

One late goal ends up being difference between LTCC and state championship

2018 was a storied and undefeated regular season for the Lake Tahoe Community College women's soccer team. It was a year of many firsts.

The Coyotes were ranked number two at one point according to the United Soccer Coaches Junior College Division III women’s soccer national poll. They find out today when the next national poll results are released where they ended up nationally for the season.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Women's Soccer Team has dominated throughout their 2018 season and the playoffs have been no different. On Friday afternoon they shut out San Bernardino Valley College (SBCV) by a score of 2-0 in the semifinal round of the Northern California Regionals of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) in Ventura.

5th annual Zawadisha Holiday Bazaar in South Lake Tahoe

The fifth annual Zawadisha Holiday Bazaar will be held at The Landing on December 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on December 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Local entrepreneurs, artisans and the community are being connected to support the concept of shopping locally while making change globally. A portion of proceeds from the event will be donated to Zawadisha, a social enterprise founded in Lake Tahoe by Jen Gurecki and Julie Lowe. Zawadisha will invest the funds from the event into their leadership and business training program for rural Kenyan women.

South Lake Tahoe Turkey Trot a success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The holiday fun run, the Turkey Trot, was resurrected by the Lake Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless this year and their first event was a successful one.

Organizers were hopeful in their goal of 100 runners, but almost 150 participated in the 5k run in South Lake Tahoe on November 18. Those 10-and under ran in the Gobble Wobble, a trip around the SLT Recreation Center with the length dependent on age.

The top three places for men and women each won a turkey and the youth were awarded medals.

Former City Manager Nancy Kerry honored with proclamation and party

Nancy Kerry has been gone from her position as the city manager of South Lake Tahoe since March, but she finally got the credit due for her many accomplishments and contributions during a standing room only celebration Tuesday evening.

Over 75 community leaders came together to present Nancy with a proclamation signed by both Mayor Wendy David and Mayor Pro Tem Tom Davis, their last official act with the City.

The list of tributes spoken during the evening is a lengthy one.

Soroptimist's Best of 2018 Restaurant, Brewery and Winery announced

Attendees at the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe's 48th annual Evening of Food, Wine and Beer Tasting voted for their favorite wineries, restaurants and breweries from the night at MontBleu on November 9, 2018.

Guests at the event had the opportunity to taste wines from over 30 different wineries, six breweries and 20 restaurants. Each guest voted for their favorite winery, restaurant and brewery.

South Tahoe HIgh freshman volleyball finishes year undefeated

Several South Tahoe High School fall sports teams are in the post-season and celebrating a great year of competition, and among them is the freshman girls volleyball team.

The 13 young women spent the season playing each of the nine teams in the league twice in matches from Elko to Truckee.

Coached by Ms. Megan Goldberg, who was assisted by her husband Everett, the freshman volleyball team stepped up in 18 different matches to out-serve, out-play, and out-think their opponents.
