Lake Tahoe, Reno to host Chinese Cosmos pageant
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 4:10pmNevada will host 18 contestants from all over the world who are competing in the Miss Chinese Cosmos Semi-Finals, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, chair of the Nevada Commission on Tourism, announced today in a press release.
The event will take place in Reno and Lake Tahoe from Sept. 23-30, 2011. The contest moves around the world each year, last year taking place in Sydney, Australia. This is the first time the pageant has been held in the United States.

The U. S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and other local agencies are continuing investigation and clean-up of a small spill of an unknown substance into Taylor Creek near the Forest Service Visitor Center on Hwy. 89. The Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board obtained water samples from the area this morning. Results may be available by tomorrow and will help determine whether additional clean-up is necessary.

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation has opened registration for the 2011 – 2012 Alpine, Freestyle, Freeride and Snowboard Programs. With a variety of options from the One-Day Program to the Full-Time Competitive Program, the Lake Tahoe foundation has something for all ages and levels of skiers and riders. Registration packets are available online, at the HSSF building, or by calling the HSSF administration office. Those who register and pay in full now will receive the early registration pricing; prices increase $100 on November 1, 2011.

As the Lakeview Commons project in the middle of town plugs along, a building is taking shape near the El Dorado Beach boat ramp.

To a crowd of about 200, the South Lake Tahoe City Council met to hear the 2011-12 Budget Proposal from its city manager and finance director on Thursday. There was an obvious tension between the council and members of the public who attended the meeting, though the general sentiment of the council and city manager is that the deficit issues are not their fault, and that employee sacrifice is what is required to balance the budget.
