Karen "Penny" Bennett Martin ~ 1955 - 2024

Karen Ingrid “Penny” Bennett Martin passed away at age 69 on October 11, 2024. She was born in Iraan, Texas on April 18, 1955. Her parents were Eugene “Gene” Bennett and Margareta “Peg” Barber. She was raised by her Great grandparents who named her “Penny” from her copper-colored hair, and then by her paternal grandparents, Gene “Chile” Bennett and Mary Belle “Mama” Bennett.

Nonna K. Katzenstein `~ 1926 - 2024

Nonna K. Katzenstein (nee Klinghardt) was born in Harbin, China, on January 30, 1926. She died on September 13, 2024, in South Lake Tahoe at the age of 98.

Nonna was born in Harbin, China after her parents had emigrated from Siberia to China after the Russian Revolution. Education was important to her family and at the age of nine, she attended St. Francis boarding school in Cheefoo, China for seven years. There she learned English since Russian was her native language. When WW II broke out in 1941, her school closed and she returned to Shanghai to live with her family.

Sky Wheeler ~ 1954 - 2024

G. Warren Wheeler IV, age 69, of South Lake Tahoe, passed away on September 19, 2024, after a very brief illness.

“Sky” was born on Nov. 18, 1954 to G. Warren Wheeler III and Grace Evelyn Conley in Flushing, New York. Sky graduated from Central Valley High School in Valley Stream, NY in 1972. He completed his undergraduate studies at Manhattanville in Harrison, NY, and went on to earn his JD from Miami Law School.

On August 31, 2024, John Jerome “Jerry” Dozal peacefully departed us while surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He was born on September 30, 1939, to Joseph & Francis in Los Angeles, California.

Honoring Beverly “Bev” Etter at gathering at Sierra House Elementary

The community of South Lake Tahoe lost a wonderful teacher and friend in Beverly "Bev" Etter, who passed away on March 10, 2024. Bev was a longtime member of Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church.

Bev was a full-time teacher for 32 years, teaching in Weaverville, Corning, Chico, and South Lake Tahoe. Upon retirement, her passion for teaching brought her back and she substitute taught for an additional 22 years in South Lake Tahoe. In the total of 54 years, Bev taught, loved, and made a difference in the lives of over ten thousand children.

Mary Sue Harris ~ 1941 - 2024

On June 13, 2024, Mary Sue Harris, a long-time resident of South Lake Tahoe, sadly passed away.

Born on May 16, 1941, in Arkansas, Mary Sue moved to Stockton, Calif. where she met her husband of 64 years, Albert. They moved to Tahoe in 1961 and raised two children, Terry and Robin. Mary Sue did daycare for 45 years, helping to raise numerous children around South Lake Tahoe.

Mary Sue touched the lives of many, and will always be remembered with a smile.

In Memory - Shari Sue Fairweather Pace ~ December 14, 1948 - June 5, 2024

Our beloved Shari Sue Fairweather was born December 14, 1948, and passed away June 5, 2024. Her 75 years started at the U.S. Naval Dispensary in Seattle, Wash. with parents Donald Fairweather and Earlene Crouse Fairweather (our Gada). Donald was transferred to Mot Naval Airbase in Mountain View, Calif. and Shari became a Californian forever. She graduated from Fremont High School in Sunnyvale in 1966. By then, she had already
developed friendships that would last her lifetime.

Audrey Shirts ~ August 12, 1934 - August 12, 2024

Audrey Pearl Shirts, born August 12, 1934, quietly passed away on August 12, 2024, her 90th birthday. Her children, Len and Paula, and their spouses, Franziska and John, were with her.

Audrey’s early years were spent with her parents, Art and Sue Jones, and brothers Claude and Harry, in Bear Lake, Michigan. The family relocated to Southern California in 1939, and Audrey graduated from Redlands High in 1952.

Douglas Marshall Barclay ~ August 12, 1950 - August 21, 2024

The Barclay family is sad to announce the passing of Douglas Barclay. He passed in South Lake Tahoe on August 21, 2024. He was the beloved husband to Hellen Barclay and father to Prince Obere.

The funeral service will be held on September 5, 2024, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe, Calif. at 10 a.m. A reception will immediately follow in Grace Hall.

In Memory: Kaleb Curtzwiler

Kaleb James Martin Curtzwiler died August 9, 2010. He was 28.

Mr. Curtzwiler was born Jan. 27, 1982, at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. The 2000 South Tahoe High School graduate was an avid soccer player.

Although he did not ski competitively, it was a sport he participated in with his family and one that he excelled at.

Nicole Chesher Marsel ~ November 18, 1983 – June 25, 2024

Nicole Chesher Marsel, age 40, of South Lake Tahoe, California, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. Nicole was born in Arlington Heights, IL, grew up in Cary, IL, and moved to South Lake Tahoe ten years ago, where she made a profound impact on the community.

Teruyo (Terry) Kunibe ~ October 7, 1921 – June 11, 2024

Teruyo (Terry) Kunibe passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2024. She was born in Perkins, California, to Japanese immigrants Tsuneichi Kimura and Tomiye Fukuoka on October 7, 1921. Terry is survived by her children: Charlene Braun (Andy), Susanne Sharpnack (John), Phyllis Powers (Terry), and Russell Kunibe (Shannon). She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Terry was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, as well as her sisters Emiko Kimura and Machiko Kimura, and her brother Kazuo Kimura.

Jason Tate Kershell ~ September 11, 1973 - June 5, 2024

Jason passed away unexpectedly and is survived by his father Henry, brother Hank, sister Tanya, aunt Wanda Mackey, and of course his beloved cat Mookie. Jason was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria Kershell, grandparents Eva and Bill Wolf, and his much-loved dogs Cuddles and Keira.

A resident of South Lake Tahoe since infancy, he graduated from South Tahoe High School in 1991.

Jason was a great lover of sports; many friends have great memories of watching sports (especially the Oakland A's), playing softball, throwing darts, playing pool, and bowling with him.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A funeral and celebration of life have been scheduled for John Cristando who died on June 3 at the age of 98 on Friday, June 28.

Celebration of Life - Immediately following in the church’s Grace Hall.

WWII Veteran John J. Cristando ~ March 16, 1926 - June 3, 2024

A well-loved fixture in South Lake Tahoe for the last 58 years, John J. Cristando, sadly passed away on Monday, June 3 at the age of 98. A man who was very proud of being in the European Theater in World War II, John had originally planned on being in France for the 80th-anniversary ceremony of D-Day in Normandy after he was chosen to attend, but health kept him at Lake Tahoe.

Judge Eddie T. Keller ~ June 6, 1941 - May 4, 2024

When Judge Eddie T. Keller died unexpectedly on May 4, 2024, he left behind volumes of memories and a treasure trove full of family, friends, and colleagues. A legend in legal circles, the former Assistant Presiding Judge Keller served in the courts on both the east and west slopes of El Dorado County and for years in the California Attorney General's Office.

Retired Judge Suzanne Kingsbury said Keller was a man of great integrity and intellect. She said, "He helped improve access to the court system and the delivery of justice."

Richard "Rick" Mapes ~ 1956 - 2024

Richard Alan Mapes was born in Chico, Calif. on August 13, 1956, to parents, Harold S. Mapes and Barbara J. Mapes (née Moore). The long-time resident passed away in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. on May 18, 2024, at the age of 67.

Beverly Etter, long-time teacher, dies at 85

Long-time South Lake Tahoe resident Beverly Helen Etter went home to be with Jesus peacefully with her family by her side on March 10, 2024, in Chico, California. She was 85.

Beverly, “Bev”, was born to Everett and Helen Milne, the second daughter of four girls. She is survived by two of her sisters, Margie Dunham of Redding, CA and Darlene Rumboltz (Matt) of Round Mountain, CA, and preceded in death by her sister, Marilyn Coffman.

Leaving a legacy of love and laughter: Douglas Wayne Kixmiller

Douglas Wayne Kixmiller, affectionately known as Doug, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2023. He was a devoted son, brother, father, uncle, and friend, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Doug was the epitome of a family man and a loyal friend. He possessed a heart of gold and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His generosity knew no bounds, and he would give anyone the shirt off his back if it meant making their day a little brighter.

Captain Steve Bryant ~ 1983 - 2023

Captain Steve, a truly legendary being with a whirlwind of passion, love, and knowledge, set sail on his final voyage on this earth on November 17, 2023, leaving behind a wake of cherished memories and a legacy that will forever be etched in the hearts of all those who had the experience of knowing him. His buoyant laugh and beaming smile could brighten the stormiest of seas, an irreplaceable beacon of cheerfulness and hilariousness.

Taylen Robert Claude Brooks~ March 3, 2003 - March 23, 2024

Taylen Robert Claude Brooks gave his life defending his brother Wyatt and himself from a mountain lion attack near Georgetown, California, on March 23, 2024.

The natural bond between the two was made stronger by the time they spent together in the great outdoors, hunting deer and turkey in season, casting for bass and trout all summer long. They lived that rarest of things in the modern era, what Teddy Roosevelt called The Strenuous Life. They ate what they bagged, and at times, bagged entirely what they ate. Right down to roasted pigeons and squirrel fricassee.

Remembering Carol Mac Adam

Carol was born in Eugene (Lane County), Oregon, to Wayne Mac Adam and Mary (Sissler) Mac Adam on March 5, 1937. Carol’s identical twin sister, Eleanor Proctor, predeceased Carol in July, 2007, as did Jeanette Mac Adam, an older sister, who passed in 2019. Carol has one cousin, Phillip Sissler of Fossil, Oregon, with whom she remained close over the years.

Robert (Bob) A. McDowell ~ March 25, 1943 - February 20, 2024

February 20, 2024, sadly marked the passing of Robert (Bob) A. McDowell at his home in Gardnerville, Nevada after a long, heroic battle with kidney disease. He was 80.

Bob was born in Berkeley, California to William and Patricia McDowell. He graduated from El Cerrito High School and received his B.S. in Natural Resources Conservation in 1967 and his Master of Science in Forest Management in 1973 from Humboldt State University. He earned a Graduate Level Certificate for Environmental Planning at UC Davis.

South Lake Tahoe resident and former CHP officer Don Elston passes away

Don Elston, a longtime South Lake Tahoe resident, has passed away. A full obituary will be created but the family wanted his local friends to know.

Don Elston, born August 25, 1942, spent 29 years with the California Highway Patrol. He was in West Los Angeles and Barstow before relocating to the South Lake Tahoe office.

He and his wife Hedy were married for 40 years, 38 of those in South Lake Tahoe.

Sadly, Don passed away on March 5, 2024, at the age of 81.

Christopher Daniel McClure ~ 1971 - 2024

Christopher D. McClure, 52, after a short battle with cancer passed away on January 30, 2024, at Renown Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. He was born on February 11, 1971, in Anaheim, California, the son of John W. and Karen J. (Buran) McClure.

Mitchell Duane Jones 1949 - 2024

Mitchell Duane Jones passed away on January 26, 2024, following a period of declining health. Mitch was a graduate of Armijo High School in Fairfield, CA, and UC Berkeley, where he was very active in the marching band.

After graduating from college, Mitch became the band director at Fairfield High School in Fairfield, Calif. where the band had the honor of marching in the 1980 Tournament of Roses Parade under his direction.

James "Rezzy" Reszetylo ~ 1/18/45 - 1/28/24

Jimmy was born January 18, 1945 in Woodward, Oklahoma to Nick and Theresa Reszetylo. The oldest of six children he graduated from Aliquippa High School in Aliquippa, PA. He enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Minot, North Dakota where it was so cold he volunteered to go to Vietnam in 1966. Upon honorable discharge, he moved to San Diego and worked for Beneficial Finance then on to Ventura County where he won highest producer awards at Winfield Title Co.

Longtime South Lake Tahoe local, Kenneth Anderson, passes away at 92

Kenneth (Ken/Kenny) Victor Anderson, 92, of Roseville, California, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2023, at Sutter Roseville Hospital surrounded by his loved ones.

Ken was born on April 18, 1931, in Hollywood, California to Ruth & Carl Anderson. Early on he was always a hard worker and a loving person to his friends and family. In his late teens and early 20's he worked in newspaper distribution and was in the Air National Guard.

Mary Elizabeth “Liz” Bricker ~ August 1, 1932 - December 19, 2023

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth “Liz” Bricker, aged 91, on December 19, 2023. She left this world surrounded by the love of her family and friends.

Born on August 1, 1932, Mary Elizabeth “Liz” Bricker was a devoted, loving wife and partner with her husband Darell Gene Bricker of 61 years, embarking on great adventures to the far reaches of Alaska and many journeys in between. Liz met each of life’s challenges as opportunities and left everything she touched in a better place.

Mike Wyatt ~ 1957 - 2023

On January 3, 2024, Michael Talmage Wyatt of South Lake Tahoe, California passed away after a valiant struggle with cancer. Born on February 27, 1957, Mike died at 66 years of age. His wife Judy, who was by his side throughout his long illness, lovingly served as his primary caretaker and steadfast source of support.

To our beloved Destiny. It is with grace and sorrow to say that Destiny passed away on November 22, 2023. Destiny was a bright light, she could make anyone’s day with just her smile. Destiny will forever be 19 years old.

She was just about to graduate this Spring from LTCC. Destiny was loved by countless hearts and has left her impact in each and every one of us. We miss you Destiny!

Jake was born on March 16, 1996, in South Lake Tahoe, California to Ed and Lisa Roe. Heaven called him home on November 18, 2023, at the age of 27.

Mark Cohen ~ 1947 - 2023

Former South Lake Tahoe resident and businessman, Mark Cohen, passed away on August 20, 2023 in Bothell, Washington at the age of 77. Mark was born on July 9th, 1946 in Los Angeles, California to Harry and Mildren Cohen and he was an only child. He graduated from Westchester High School in 1964 and went on to study at Santa Monica City College earning his associate’s degree and later transferring to UCLA. He met Virginia Martin, and the couple was married in February 1968.

Memorial for Judith A. Cefalu to be held at Happy Homestead Tuesday

The memorial of Judith A. Cefalu, who passed away on November 20, 2020, is being held on Tuesday, October 24 at 11 a.m. at Happy Homestead Cemetery. The pandemic prevented the ability for a public memorial service of Judith from being conducted in a timely manner after her passing.

The internment of her ashes will take place on what would have been her birthday. The pastor of St. Theresa’s Church will join to provide a short tribute to Judith’s wonderful life.

Thomas Incopero ~ 1953 - 2023

Thomas Incopero was born on October 17, 1953, and passed away on September 26, 2023. Tom moved to Lake Tahoe in 1976 with his family and fell in love with the area and enjoyed the beauty.

Tom was married to his wife Julie for 50 years and they embraced their love together. At Lake Tahoe, he raised his daughter, Misty, and son, Tommy. He enjoyed archery, motorcycle riding, and his beautiful Cobra.

Tom was a very proud grandfather of two wonderful grandchildren.

Carol Gillespie ~ 1939 - 2023

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Carol Gillespie, on August 22, 2023. Born on December 17, 1939, in Hot Springs, South Dakota, Carol will be remembered for her joyful, caring, and generous heart and will be missed by all who knew her.

Carol was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, John Gillespie on December 15, 2022, her daughter, Anita Goodnow-Cabral in 1985, and her son, Bruce
Johnson in 2007.

Service set for Robert James “Buzz” Bruzzese

Robert James “Buzz” Bruzzese passed away unexpectedly on November 9, 2022. He was born on March 21, 1953 in Queens, New York. Shortly before his first birthday, his family moved to St. Clair Shores, Michigan where he lived until he left to attend Western Michigan University. After graduating, he moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1978.

Larry J. Reid ~ June 23 1934 - August 8 2023

Larry Reid was a member of the American Legion Post 795 in South Lake Tahoe. Born in Mason City, Iowa, Larry and his family moved to Oakland, Calif. in 1939 and then to Richmond, Calif. in 1942. Larry graduated from Richmond Union High in 1952. That same year he joined the US Army and was sent to Seoul, Korea where he served until 1956, later joining the Air Force In 1958.

Larry married his wife, Donna, in 1960. He left the Air Force with Donna in May 1962 and moved back to the Bay Area.

What a Life: Jeff Kaufer 5/26/51 - 8/11/23

Jeffrey Jay Kaufer was born May 26, 1951. Jeff passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after a year and a half battle with cancer.  He was born in Detroit, MI and his family relocated to Southern California when he was 5 years old. He and his brothers bounced between Thousand Oaks and Hollywood. A highlight from his childhood was getting Sandy Koufax to give him and his two brothers, a ride home after a game.

Hope Lutheran Church service dedicated to Pastor Joel Martin in memoriam

On Sunday, September 10, Hope Lutheran Church will dedicate its Sunday service to Pastor Joel Martin in memoriam. Pastor Joel served as pastor at Hope from 2003 to 2014. Many have benefited from his dedication to his ministry. From building a local youth ministry to organizing ice fishing trips, Pastor Joel approached his ministry with great kindness, joy, faith, and above all else love. He is survived by his wife, Amanda, and two sons, Rowan and Ezra.

Steve “Cosmo” Kosmides ~ December 1954 – July 2023

Steve grew up with his brother Ralph in Southern California. Steve loved the ocean, developing a lifelong passion for surfing. Still, he knew Southern California wasn’t where he wanted to stay. When Steve graduated from high school in 1973, he went to visit friends in South Lake Tahoe for three weeks and instead found his forever home.

Dr. Richard N. Peterson ~ June 25, 1949 - August 28, 2023

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Richard Peterson at the age of 74. He was the son of Nils and Margery Peterson. Richard was a dedicated doctor who touched the lives of many. Raised in Billings, Mont., Richard earned his medical degree in family practice from Loma Linda University in 1974 and later became board-certified in geriatrics in 1994. Richard's journey led him to Lake Tahoe in 1994, where he established himself as a pillar of the community and obtained the credential of Certified Medical Director.

Douglas Forte ~ December 3, 1944 to July 24, 2023

The world has lost one of the best. On July 24th, at 78 years of age, Doug Forte passed away while on vacation in Maui. Doug was a 41-year resident of South Lake Tahoe. For the last four years, he had been living in Green Valley, Arizona where he lived with his wife Mary and dog Lola.

Arthur Muskovitz ~ 1936 - 2023

Arthur Muskovitz was born on February 27, 1936 in San Francisco, California, and passed away on August 1, 2023, in South Lake Tahoe at the age of 87.

Jim Haydn Sears ~ 1952 - 2023

As his wife held his hands, Jim Haydn Sears passed away peacefully on July 26, 2023, in Carbondale, Colo., at the age of 71. Throughout his life, Jim found immense satisfaction in serving and protecting his country and community, both in the U.S. Army and in various law enforcement positions. Numerous accolades note his intelligence, ingenuity, initiative, common sense approach to challenges, calm and easygoing nature, and, above all, his interest in helping others. He was not averse to challenging tradition or providing his point of view, even when it conflicted with that of his superior.

Nicholas Price DeFressine ~ February 13, 1993 - April 18, 2023

Our family is sad to share the passing of Nicholas (Nick) Price DeFressine. It has taken some time for us to come to grips with our loss.

Nicholas is survived by his father Richard (Rick), his mother Krista, and his sister Miranda. Nick has a huge extended family as well.

Nick was raised in South Lake Tahoe. He went to Meyers Elementary, South Tahoe Middle School and South Tahoe High School.

Mary D. Townsend ~ January 10, 1931 - March 3, 2023

Mary Dolores Townsend passed away on March 3rd, 2023. Mary lived to be 92 years, 1 month, and 21 days young. She deserved every single one of those seconds on earth. We are certain she has the biggest and most tropical suite in heaven with her late husband Jimmy, her sister Theresa, and the many more that preceded her.

Celebration of Life for Erich E. Alexander

Erich E. Alexander, May 16, 1957 - July 6, 2023. Our hearts are broken as we announce the loss of our beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend. Erich E. Alexander passed away peacefully with loved ones by his side.

He was a patient, loving, caring, sincere, and incredibly skilled person. He was grateful for every day. Erich was born in San Mateo, Calif., and spent his first seven years in Pleasanton, Calif. The family then moved to a new home in Dublin, Calif. where he lived with his two brothers and parents until he graduated from Dublin High School in 1975.

Vincent Michael Lee ~ 1957 - 2023

Vincent Michael Lee passed away at the age of 65 on June 26, 2023, after suffering a traumatic head injury from a fall. A memorial service will be held for him at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at St. Theresa’s church in South Lake Tahoe, California.
