Fitch Affirms South Tahoe Public Utility District with AA+; Rating Outlook Stable

Fitch Ratings affirmed South Tahoe Public Utility District on Monday as part of its ongoing survey of public agencies, noting the ratings outlook remains within the organization remains "stable."
The firm, which positions itself as a global rating agency dedicated to providing value beyond the rating through independent and prospective credit opinions, research and data, gave the water and sewer district a AA+ rating, noting $10.8 million sewer revenue certificates of participation. The ratings agency also asserts that STPUD continues to have strong reserves in place that protects the district against a reduction in its property tax revenues.

The existing 2 percent Transient Occupancy Tax, which is up for renewal on the June 5, 2012 ballot, has funded a number of North Lake Tahoe public improvement projects and services since voters first authorized it in 1996.

The renewal, called Measure F, is not a tax increase and, if passed, would continue to be paid by lodging guests only via the TOT bed tax when they spend the night in North Lake Tahoe. North Lake Tahoe residents would not be taxed under Measure F.

Homewood Mountain Resort Extends its Season

With the recent snowfall and fantastic spring conditions Homewood Mountain Resort will reopen the weekend of April 13-15, (Friday through Sunday) giving skiers and riders and extra weekend on the mountain.
Depending on weather conditions, the resort will plan to have the mountain open for guests from top to bottom. Shuttles will operate between the North/South lodges every five minutes throughout the weekend. As always, the shuttle rides are complimentary. Lifts open 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

California advocates seek to cut school suspensions by tossing 'willful defiance' charge

School suspensions were once reserved for serious offenses including fighting and bringing weapons or drugs on campus. But these days they're just as likely for talking back to a teacher, cursing, walking into class late or even student eye rolling.
More than 40 percent of suspensions in California are for "willful defiance," or any behavior that disrupts class, and critics say it's a catchall that needs to be eliminated because it's overused for trivial offenses, disproportionately used against black and Latino boys and alienates the students who need most to stay in school.

'Stars of Tomorrow' Talent Competition Applications Due April 20

The 6th annual STARS of Tomorrow Talent Competition has been scheduled for Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the South Tahoe Middle School MPR. Applications are due April 20.
The competition is open to students currently enrolled in the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades in the South Tahoe area, both California and Nevada sides of the state line. This includes South Tahoe High, Whittell High and any student enrolled in a private high school program or an approved continuation or home-schooled program.

South Lake Tahoe entries will be picked up from library the week of May 8. There are some exceptions, for example, floriculture entries and baked items, need to be brought to the fair on their respective receiving days.
