Intro to Linoleum Cut Printmaking Workshop with artist Evi K. Hui May 27, 2023

In this beginner workshop held on May 27 from 9:30am-12pm at Valhalla's Grand Hall, you will be guided through the process and make your own reusable linocut and print on a selection of paper. Lino printing can be used to create beautiful works of art, patterns, personalized stamps and much more.

Linoleum was first used as a floor covering in the 1860s, but it wasn’t until the early 20th century that lino cutting developed as a new printing technique. Many famous artists experimented with lino cutting techniques including MC Escher, Matisse and Picasso. The act of carving a negative into a printing surface goes way back in time and is used by many cultures such as the Japanese and Indonesia to make beautiful art works.

We'll provide all the knowledge and tools you need to make a lino print, by carving away the soft, rubbery surface of a sheet of lino using a cutting tool (sometimes called a gouge) to create your design. Then we'll cover the printing block with a special ink using a roller and press it onto paper by hand. One of the benefits of linocutting is that once you’ve carved your design you can use it to create as many prints as you want!
