As the High Holiday season approaches, it is an appropriate time to have a scribe inspect the parchment scrolls in our tefillin and our mezuzahs to ensure they are still Kosher. Both tefillin and mezuzahs should be checked by a Sofer (certified scribe) twice every seven years to see if they have been affected by adverse weather conditions (which can cause cracks in the letters) and if any other defect has occurred. It is preferable to check mezuzahs which are on the outside of buildings more often, due to their vulnerability to inclement weather.
What is a sofer?
The word “sofer” is Hebrew for scribe. A sofer is a specially trained craftsman who writes the holy texts on parchment using Hebrew calligraphy. Sofers also inspect Torahs, mezuzah scrolls and tefillin to make sure they are properly made and have not been damaged over time. A sofer can, moreover, repair Torahs, mezuzot and tefillin.
