Seasonal closures apply to many Forest Service recreation sites including beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and National Forest roads.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $5.2 million project to upgrade metal beam guardrail and construct concrete barriers at 89 locations from the Red Hawk Undercrossing to 1.9 miles west of the junction with State Route 89 in Meyers. Completion is expected this fall or spring 2020.

New Vail Resorts report highlights community and sustainability achievements

In the Lake Tahoe area, $1.9 million in grants was given to 93 local organizations.
LTCC women's soccer team on top of national coaches poll for 4th straight week
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/18/2019 - 7:46amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College's Women's Soccer team is on top of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NJCAA poll for Division III for the fourth consecutive week. On September 25 they rose to the top spot of the list and haven't left since then.
Fresno City College is currently in the second spot, a team they tied during a September 20 match-up, 1-1. The team the women lost too in last year's state final, Santiago Canyon College, dropped to the twelfth-ranked team.

The South Lake Tahoe Rotary Club is inviting the community to join them on Wednesday, October 23 at Lake Tahoe AleWorX to not only honor Roberta Mason but to also "kick polio's behind." This is a family-friendly event from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Roberta recently celebrated her 90th birthday and the party continues. She has been a vital part of the local community for over 60 years and was instrumental in bringing Lake Tahoe Community College into existence. She was a member of their Board of Trustees for 40 years.

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada has teamed up with Christmas Cheer again for a produce giveaway to the South Lake Tahoe community on Friday, October 18, 2019.
They will be at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe from noon to 1:00 p.m.

Not only for these reasons, but take-home vehicles have also resulted in cleaner cars with fewer mechanical problems, longer life-spans and reduced costs.

The Christina, a 65-foot yacht that once called Lake Tahoe home, is now an iconic art car that has been cruising along the playa in the Black Rock Desert. She is returning to Lake Tahoe during "Docked at Hard Rock" November 1-2.
Flipper Manchester, a South Lake Tahoe construction company owner, was originally hired to demolish the yacht that had been dry-docked at the Tahoe Keys Marina for years.

It is also encouraging to live in a City that has resolved to transition the City’s entire electrical grid to clean energy by 2032, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent below baseline by 2040.
South Lake Tahoe Highway 50 roadwork update

Until November 1, crews will be working on some curb and gutter portions of the road along with some sidewalk repair. They will also be working on electrical components, landscaping, erosion control and painting of lines.

It is flat out the best SUV I have ever driven with performance, ride, handling, quiet, comfort and economy levels that put it immediately at the top of its class and almost every other class. Palisade is simply a Class act.

On October 10 at approximately 1:30 p.m., fire managers made the decision due to unfavorable weather conditions and the inability to meet previously established objectives. This change allows for additional resources to assist in suppression from partners such as CalFire.

Lake Valley Fire to host public hearing on proposed $52/parcel tax

The Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) will hold a public hearing on October 9 at 4:00 p.m. to discuss a proposed $52 per parcel per year tax to fund needed apparatus, equipment, and supplies. They are going to ask voters on March 3, 2020, for the annual tax increase for fire protection, suppression, and emergency medical services.
The special LVFPD Board of Directors hearing will be held at Fire Station 7, 2211 Keetak Street in Meyers.

Students ready to start first full week back at Sierra House Elementary

"It is so good to be back!" said Principal Karin Holmes. "The kids are doing great and the staff is so happy to be back in their classrooms. We are getting organized and enjoying being home. Our staff and students did not miss a beat in the transition back to Sierra House."
The school's annual Walkathon fundraiser is Friday, October 11.

This was the 17th year the Moose Lodge has hosted this free event for children in the Lake Tahoe area.
Registration began at 8:00 am and wrapped up at 2:00 p.m. Hot dogs, chips, sodas, and water were provided free to all registered children.

Cannabis businesses not allowed under Meyers Area Plan, for now
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/04/2019 - 11:06amMEYERS, Calif. - El Dorado County has opened the online availability of pre-applications and applications for commercial cannabis use permits and annual operating permits, but those wanting to operate in Meyers must wait. The Meyers Area Plan does not meet the permitted zones for the retail sales, cultivation, delivery and manufacturing licenses that will be issued.
There are a few locations in the unincorporated areas of El Dorado County on the East Slope (Lake Tahoe area) that could fit the requirements between Meyers and South Lake Tahoe and Tahoma.
Soroptimists of South Lake Tahoe to fund softball field renovations

Members wanted to meet a series of developed criteria and ultimately leave a lasting legacy in South Lake Tahoe with that project and considered needs presented by area non-profits. A winner has been selected and members have just voted to give $325,000 to support the Soroptimist Softball Renovation Project.

Many of us live here, or moved here, because of what they provide - culture, lifestyle, and livelihood.
Undersheriff Randy Peshon reappointed to statewide justice committee
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/02/2019 - 10:30amEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Undersheriff Randy Peshon has been reappointed to the California State Collaborative Justice Courts Advisory Committee. This committee is made up of superior court judges, court executives, and advocates who report to the Judicial Council of California. They make recommendations to improve justice courts and their processing of cases.
Peshon, who once ran the jail in South Lake Tahoe, has served in this capacity for the past six years and will begin a new three year term on November 1.

California began a new water year today with significantly more water in storage than the previous year thanks to above-average snow and precipitation.
Power outage in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/01/2019 - 11:41am3:45 p.m. update: Crews have been able to re-route power to re-energize most customers. The remaining customers are expected to be re-energized by 5:30 pm and then crews will focus on the long term repairs through the night.
3:20 p.m. update: Power has been restored to about half of those affected by the earlier outage. Liberty Utilities says the remaining 3,184 customers should have power restored by 3:41 p.m.
South Lake Tahoe to become Sister City with Ameca in Jalisco, Mexico
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/01/2019 - 11:16amThe City of South Lake Tahoe is on its way to becoming the Sister City with the City of Ameca, State of Jalisco, Mexico. This will be the first Sister City for South Lake Tahoe since its former relationship with Baikalsk, Russia ended.
On August 20, long-time local resident and educator Tere Tibbets brought the subject to the City Council and the process to become a Sister City began. Los Mexicanos Restaurant owner Victor Mora had the idea and worked with Tibbetts to bring it to fruition.
Sierra House Elementary opens fully on Tuesday

Families, students, and staff got the good news Monday.
"The kids and staff are thrilled to be back," said Lake Tahoe Unified School District Spokesperson Shannon Chandler. "It's like a second home so I imagine that everyone is relieved and comforted to be back."

Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/29/2019 - 12:25pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A winter storm just days after the first day of Autumn isn't too unusual for the Lake Tahoe region, but it always catches everyone by surprise and leaves one wondering if Fall will return.
Many areas at lake level saw an inch or so of snow, with a few inches at upper elevations. Expect more of the same Sunday night into Monday morning. The Winter Snow Advisory goes into effect Sunday night at 5:00 p.m. and lasts until 10:00 a.m. Monday.

Women's Soccer Team at LTCC ranked #1 in national coach's poll
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/27/2019 - 3:59pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2018 the Lake Tahoe Community College's Women's Soccer team made an impression on coaches around the country and they became the #2 ranked Division III team during the season. Their epic season took them to the state finals.
Fast forward to this year and the 2019 Lady Coyotes made it to the number one on the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NJCAA poll for Division III this week. Fresno City College is currently in the second spot, a team they tied during a September 20 match-up, 1-1.

Climate Change Strike
Last Friday, hundreds of students at STHS walked out of their classes in protest against climate change inaction. Some even marched down towards the Lakeview Commons and spoke in front of locals. Inspired by the strike, other students are coming together to find more effective ways of protest.
Lake Tahoe businesses honored with Douglas County Spotlight Awards

This year’s awards were given at the Critical Issues Conference held on Thursday, September 26, 2019. The Spotlight Awards recognized businesses in 7 different categories: Business and Professional Service, Entrepreneur, Manufacturing and Production, Restaurant, Retail, Sports and Recreation, and Tourism and Hospitality.
El Dorado County supervisors approve adopted budget
