Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/09/2018 - 8:55pmThe Amgen Tour of California is just a week away, and since both the women's and men's races come through South Lake Tahoe this year, many cyclists can be seen training on area roads.
On Wednesday, four members of the United Heath Care (UNC) cycling team joined local comedian and radio personality Howie Nave on a bike ride to Round Hill Pines.
Howie participates in the annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride around Lake Tahoe, so he can ride, and the ladies of Amgen today treated him kindly on the roads, not leaving him in the dust as he joked about.
Man suspected of several vehicle break-ins at Stateline casino

At 1:50 a.m. Sunday, June 4, Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) received a call from Harrah's Tahoe security, alerting them that they had detained a man, 22-year-old Jeremy Perez of San Francisco.
Perez was with security officers after he was seen leaving a parking lot where several vehicles had their windows smashed and property taken.
During their investigation DCSO deputies located evidence connecting Perez to the car burglaries and he was arrested.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/02/2017 - 5:16pmCaltrans is advising motorists that thousands of bicyclists will be sharing the highways all around Lake Tahoe during Sunday's 26th annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride.
Northbound State Highway 89 in Emerald Bay at Spring Creek Road will be closed to through traffic from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. during the event.

"Imagine the scenic beauty of Lake Tahoe with its crystal clear blue waters surrounded by towering majestic snow capped peaks. Imagine being able to ride a bicycle around its 72-mile shoreline or a 100-mile century ride," said Event Director Curtis Fong.
The ride isn't a race, but a fun ride and is fully supported with volunteers manning rest stops along the way with food and beverage.
Caltrans project outlined to South Lake Tahoe community

This will be their last Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP) task to collect and treat stormwater runoff which accomplishes several other goals as well.

"The TTD (Tahoe Transportation District) is pleased to have been part of this project," said Carl Hasty, District Manager of TTD. "Bike trails are thought of as a 'nice to do' project in many areas, but in Lake Tahoe they are important."
1,800 cyclists to bike around the lake in Sunday's Tour de Tahoe

More than 1,800 riders are expected to take on the 4,000 feet of climbing involved in the ride which continues to gain in popularity. Besides recreational riders there will also be teams riding to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Bicycle and pedestrian safety a big concern in South Lake Tahoe

In the last six years, 12 people have died in South Lake Tahoe while cycling or walking. In that same time, 42 people were injured while riding bikes on the road while 37 pedestrians were hurt.

All 3,500 spots have been filled by riders participating in the 72-mile around the lake ride, the 100-mile Century ride and the 35-mile fun ride which includes a boat cruise.

Smart towns know how to capitalize on active and bike tourism

If the 15 page spread about Lake Tahoe in the May edition of Bike magazine is any indication, people know about the activity/recreation based tourism awaiting them in Tahoe, and they're about to come.

By tradition, I always cover the bicycle race on foot to give me a different perspective to the people who cover it on bicycle helmet cams or in a car.

This year's 23rd Annual event is on Sunday, June 1. With the temporary closure of the Horizon for remodeling, the staging for the ride has moved across the street to the MontBleu.

Lake Tahoe cyclist reported down with head injury, air ambulance responds
Submitted by Editor on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 7:10amCalstar was called to transport a 31-year-old female cyclist who was reported to have suffered head injuries in a bicycle accident at Highway 89 south of Spring Creek. Dispatch reports that a nurse said the woman was hurt and required immediate medical care. It is not known if the cyclist is part of America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride, which is an organized Sunday ride around Lake Tahoe.
