High school writing winners selected by Sierra Nevada College Winners to read alongside award-winning poets, novelists

Sierra Nevada College professors and editors evaluated over 500 submissions to choose the top winners for the 2012 High School Writing Contest, a national competition that produced exceptional stories, poems and creative nonfiction from high school juniors and seniors.
“The level of talent was extraordinary, making it tough for the judges,” said June Saraceno, English Department chair at Sierra Nevada College, a four-year private college in Incline Village, Nev.

Tahoe Chamber celebrates 2012 Blue Ribbon winners at awards ceremony

UPDATED: The 5th annual Tahoe Chamber Blue Ribbons Awards were held Thursday night, recognizing businesses, individual and organizations for their outstanding service and contribution to the South Shore Lake Tahoe community. The awards presentation recognized all businesses nominated and announce the winners of the eight separate categories.

City: Thanks Raley’s for Support of the Turkey Trot Fun Run

The City of South Lake Tahoe would like to remind the community that the 2012 Turkey Trot Fun Run is being held this Saturday, November 17th at the Parks and Recreation facility at 11am. The Fun Run is a free event for children ages 3-13 and every participant will win a prize. We would also like to thank the many local volunteers, including Raley’s and Optimist Club for their support of this annual local event.

Raley’s has generously donated all of the turkeys and pies as the awarded prizes to Turkey Trot Fun Run winners.

Chamber Announces the 2012 Blue Ribbon Award Nominees

The Blue Ribbon Award nominations have been tallied, with more than 150 nominations received. Thank you to the businesses and individuals who took the time to nominate those making significant contributions to the South Shore community. The 5th Annual Blue Ribbon Awards Dinner & Ceremony will be held on November 15 at Embassy Suites; all nominees will be recognized and the winners will be announced during the ceremony.

Award-winning Brooklyn Poet Book Launch at LTCC Nov. 2

On Nov. 2 at 7 pm Bona Fide Books will launch Brooklyn poet Lexa Hillyer’s award-winning collection “Acquainted with the Cold” at a reading at the Lake Tahoe Community College’s Writers’ Series. The event is free and open to the public.

“Acquainted with the Cold” is Hillyer’s first collection, and it won Bona Fide’s 2011 Melissa Lanitis Gregory Poetry Prize, offered annually in honor of the local artist who died in 2009. The book is concerned with the intersection of nature and city, and takes the reader on an invigorating ode to the seasons.

University of Nevada, Reno to host Bill Nye The Science Guy

Expedition Man Endurance Festival comes to Northern Nevada

Coming from as far as Australia and as near as North Lake Tahoe, more than 200 men and women athletes are gearing up for a race to remember at Northern Nevada’s inaugural Expedition Man Endurance Festival and Ultra-Distance-Triathlon, taking place Saturday, August 25. Athletes will begin with a swim at Zephyr Cove Resort at Lake Tahoe, then onto a more than 100-mile-bike-ride through Carson City and a long-run along the Truckee River, ending at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

Sally Ride, First American Woman In Space, Dies of Pancreatic Cancer

In a space agency filled with trailblazers, Sally K. Ride was a pioneer of a different sort. The soft-spoken California physicist broke the gender barrier 29 years ago when she rode to orbit aboard space shuttle Challenger to become America’s first woman in space.

Ride, 61, died in La Jolla, Calif. after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer, NASA reports on Monday.

Dan Quinn Wins American Century Championship for 5th time at Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, LAKE TAHOE SOUTH — Dan Quinn birdied three of his first seven holes Sunday to pull ahead and then stretched his lead on the back nine to earn a six-point victory over former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.
Quinn finished with 66 points. Rypien was second with 60 points and Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway finished third with 59 points. It was the fourth win at the event for Quinn, a former NHL star who will caddie for Ernie Els at next week’s Canadian Open. Els won the British Open earlier in the day.

Solar Project No Short-Term Energy Panacea For Nevada Office Of Military

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s Office of the Military figured it would be money ahead after entering into a contract with a firm to build solar panels on three of its sites around the state to supply it with electricity.
But today officials with the office won approval from the state Board of Examiners to seek $46,284 from a legislative contingency fund to pay excess utility costs. The reason is because the solar energy being provided under the contract is costing the agency more than if it purchased electricity directly from NV Energy.
