Fire weather watch this weekend; Cooler temps on way
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/27/2015 - 10:27pmThe US Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for late Friday night through noon on Saturday. It calls for strong winds as a low pressure system moves across the Pacific Northwest.
The winds will affect the Sierra and Western Nevada. Although humidity is ot expected to be unusually low, the long duration of windy condition combined with low fuel moisture may produce critical fire weather conditions.
Winds will be from the Southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Wind over the ridge will have gusts up to 75 mph.

“It’s something you never forget,” said Jonkey, the FBI’s lead investigator on the $3 million extortion case, who lives in retirement in Carson Valley.

Ever since President Bill Clinton held the first meeting in South Lake Tahoe in 1997, the annual focus of the Lake Tahoe Summit is to protect what Mark Twain called "the fairest picture the whole world affords."

You're exploring the valleys and canyons of the Sierra, it gets dark and you don't know where you are. How do you get to safety? You've fallen on the slippery rocks of a waterfall and can't get out. Who do you call?
El Dorado Search and Rescue (SAR) is the answer to all of these questions and dozens more. Annually, the volunteers and deputies that make up SAR handle between 150 and 200 calls in the county portion of the Tahoe basin (AKA the east slope).

Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/20/2015 - 1:56pmDogs on the Run, a South Lake Tahoe non-profit, is hosting their monthly Wag, Waddle and Walk event on Monday, July 20 at 5:30 p.m.
The monthly dog walking activity brings together dog owners for a little exercise, optional competition and socializing. The on-leash walk starts at Al Tahoe Post Office parking lot and finishes at Sierra Pizza on Al Tahoe Blvd.
This family friendly event is for non-aggressive canines and people. Dogs must be on-leash and up-to-date on their vaccinations.

City Council addresses temporary craft shows in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/08/2015 - 9:25pmThe South Lake Tahoe City Council once again addressed temporary craft shows on Tuesday, discussing many issues from displays, appearance, juries, and subjective verbiage including "quality," "nice" and "tidy," all of which were all part of the draft city ordinance they were reviewing.
Dealing with craft shows is nothing new for the council, having voted in 2013 to limit the number of shows in city limits to four per site with a maximum of eight per summer season.
City takes first steps to get out of the ambulance business

Meston wants the City to remain a part of the JPA, but hand over ambulance duties to Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD).

Man dies while jumping off cliffs at Angora Lake
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/03/2015 - 7:05pmA vacation turned into tragedy on Wednesday when a 21-year-old man from Libertyville, Illinois died after jumping from the cliffs at Angora Lake.
Cameron Gillen was visiting relatives and enjoying a day at the lake located just west of South Lake Tahoe.
"He jumped from a location where he was unable to clear the rocks," said Sgt. Michael Seligsohn of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department.
Several calls were made into 9-1-1 just after 6 p.m. July 1 as there were may witnesses to the jump.
Seligsohn said there is no reason to believe that alcohol or drugs were involved.

Multiple Fires sparked In Carson Valley; 7,000 without power

This just in from the Douglas County Sheriff's Department: On June 27, 2015, at approximately 6:17 p.m., the East Fork Fire District in Douglas County responded to a report of several wildland fires along the east side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
There have been reports of six fires along the west side of the Carson Valley.
East Fork Fire, along with the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) have responded to the multiple fires and are working to access each of the fires.

Washington Fire now 56% contained; 17,787 acres burned

Firefighters made a lot of progress on the fire lines at the Washington Fire south of Markleeville on Monday, gaining containment of 56% of the perimeter. So far, 17,787 acres have burned.
The lightning caused fire grew quickly a week ago, from 30 acres on June 19 to 6,500 acres by June 21.
At one time, over 1,100 fire personnel were working on suppression of the fire. Those numbers were reduced today to 860 as containment grew.

Loud "booms" heard on West Slope caused by planes on maneuvers
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/19/2015 - 8:40amSeveral residents on the west slope of El Dorado County have periodically made calls into law enforcement about "loud booms" heard over many days so the Sheriff's Department investigated several possible sources.
It turns out that the sounds were created by Naval Air Station Fallon and Hawthorne Army Depot maneuvers over the County, mostly heard in the area of Swansboro. The daily ordinance explosions and high speed fighters and bombers breaking the sound barrier have been determined to be the cause of the noises.
Bicycle and pedestrian safety a big concern in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/18/2015 - 9:03pmSafety for cyclists and pedestrians is a big concern for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), cycling groups and those enjoying these activities.
In the last six years, 12 people have died in South Lake Tahoe while cycling or walking. In that same time, 42 people were injured while riding bikes on the road while 37 pedestrians were hurt.

Group ready to fight City on Single Room Occupancy ordinance
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/15/2015 - 8:09pmOn June 2, 2015, the South Lake Tahoe City Council approved the first reading of a Single Room Occupancy ordinance to ensure motels and hotels being used as long term housing were kept decent, safe, sanitary, and affordable.
While the ordinance is set to be approved at the June 16 Council meeting, a small group of affected motel owners have made a plan to protest and ask for an extension so their complaints can be heard.
Medical Marijuana regulation measure clears California Assembly

AB266 merges what were two competing bills and attempts to set up state regulations that will pass muster with the federal Department of Justice. It was one of dozens of pieces of legislation advancing through the Legislature Thursday as lawmakers faced a Friday deadline to move bills out of their house of origin.

New restaurant and concert venue proposed for Heavenly Village
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/12/2015 - 8:53pmThe owners of Heavenly Village Cinemas want to turn an empty third floor space on the property into a restaurant and bar with an entertainment venue with stadium style seating for 110 people. But, in order to do so, they need to buy some extra commercial floor area (CFA) from the City of South Lake Tahoe.
Flash flooding in Douglas County
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/10/2015 - 9:22pmDouglas County Emergency Management responded to flash flooding in the Ruhenstroth, Fish Springs, East Valley and Pine Nut areas on Wednesday after receiving several calls after heavy rainfall.
The areas mostly impacted are in the Ruhenstroth area, where there is property damage in the Sawmill and Arroyo Road areas. There are currently nine properties with damage that have been reported. There are active flows of water continuing in the dip sections but the main push of water that reached the canal west of Sawmill Road is now receding.
Pound of marijuana left behind on South Lake Tahoe pier
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/10/2015 - 3:26pmIt's not every day that a pound of pot is considered lost and found, but that is what happened in South Lake Tahoe on Monday, June 8.
Thinking a box found on the Camp Richardson pier was left behind by a guest, an employee of the Beacon picked it up to turn into lost and found according to Sgt. Michael Seligsohn of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO).
When the box was opened by staff they saw that the contents were marijuana and they called EDSO.
There were no calls for lost property and deputies took the pound of pot in for destruction.
